How Google Maps rankings work

How Google Maps rankings work

Google Maps rankings determine which businesses appear in local search results — especially the Map Pack (the top 3 results shown with a map). Understanding how these rankings work is the first step to improving your visibility.

The three ranking factors

Google has stated that three primary factors determine local search rankings:

1. Relevance

How well your Google Business Profile matches what someone is searching for. This includes:

  • Your primary and secondary business categories
  • Your business description
  • Products and services listed
  • Keywords in your Google Posts and Q&A

2. Distance

How far your business is from the searcher (or the location they specified). You cannot change your physical location, but you can optimize for the service areas you cover.

3. Prominence

How well-known and trusted your business is. This is influenced by:

  • Reviews: Total count, average rating, review frequency, and owner responses
  • Web presence: Directory listings, citations, backlinks
  • Profile activity: Regular Google Posts, photos, Q&A engagement
  • Website SEO: Your website's authority and local SEO signals

The Map Pack

The Map Pack is the box showing 3 business results with a map at the top of local search results. Appearing in the Map Pack dramatically increases clicks and calls.

Getting into the Map Pack requires strong performance across all three ranking factors. Maps Agent optimizes relevance and prominence — the two factors you can directly influence.

Why rankings change

Google updates local search algorithms regularly. Rankings also fluctuate based on:

  • New competitor activity
  • Changes in review volume
  • Profile updates (or lack thereof)
  • Seasonal search patterns

Maps Agent monitors these changes and adjusts your optimization strategy accordingly.
