AI Search
What is AI search, and how is it different from traditional search for a local business?
Short answer
Google's AI search features are generated Search experiences: AI Overviews add a snapshot with supporting links, and AI Mode adds follow-up questions and deeper exploration, while classic Search mainly presents web pages and local results. For a local business, Google documents normal Search eligibility for supporting links, but meeting its requirements does not guarantee crawling, indexing, or serving.

What is the practical difference between AI search and classic Search?
| Search surface | What it does | When it appears or is used | What Google documents about links and eligibility | What it does not promise |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Classic Search and local results | Ordinary Search helps people find web pages. For a nearby business or place query, Google says local results can appear in Search and Maps.12 | A person searches for a business or place near their location. Local results can appear in Search and Maps.1 | Google primarily finds pages through links from pages it has already crawled.2 Search Essentials separates technical requirements, spam policies, and best practices.3 For an AI supporting link, a page must be indexed and eligible to appear in Google Search with a normal snippet.4 | No paid route to a better local ranking, and no guarantee that a page will be crawled, indexed, or served.14 |
| AI Overviews | An AI-generated snapshot with key information and links to dig deeper.45 | Google shows one when its systems determine that generative AI is especially helpful and additive to classic Search. It often does not trigger.5 | A supporting page must be indexed and eligible to appear in Google Search with a snippet. Google says there are no additional technical requirements or special optimizations.4 | An Overview often does not trigger, and meeting requirements does not guarantee crawling, indexing, or serving.4 |
| AI Mode | An interactive AI-powered Search response with follow-up questions, deeper exploration, query fan-out, and links to the web.6 | A person invokes AI Mode. Google also documents local tasks such as researching service costs, finding appointments, and checking nearby availability.67 | A supporting page must be indexed and eligible to appear in Google Search with a snippet. Google says AI Mode and AI Overviews may show different responses and links.4 | AI Mode and AI Overviews may show different responses and links.4 |
The difference is the unit a person reads first. A classic result is a page or local listing that the person opens. An AI Overview is a conditional summary with links. AI Mode is an interactive conversation that can search subtopics and carry the discussion into follow-up questions.456 The AI search hub keeps these surfaces separate from other assistants and from the business records they may use.

For a local business, that means a visible local result, a website link in a generated answer, and a business fact repeated in an AI response are different observations. Keep the surface, query, location context, date, and displayed source links with each observation.
Does AI search create a new local ranking system?
Google's public AI-feature documentation describes generated responses, supporting links, and ordinary Search eligibility. Google's local-ranking guidance describes local results as mainly based on relevance, distance, and popularity, and says a business cannot request or pay for a better local ranking.
Google says local results are mainly based on relevance, distance, and popularity, and a business cannot request or pay for a better local ranking.1 Treat a generated answer as a separate Search surface, not as proof that a business has gained a permanent position in local results.
When does an AI Overview appear?
Google Search Help describes AI Overviews as AI-generated snapshots with key information and links to dig deeper. Google Search Central says the feature is shown only when its systems determine that it is additive to classic Search, and that it often does not trigger.45

Google also documents a path from an AI Overview into a deeper AI Mode conversation. That transition is described for mobile devices in regions and languages where both features are supported. It is an availability condition, not a rule that every local query will produce an Overview or a follow-up conversation.5
What does eligibility for an AI supporting link actually mean?
For Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, eligibility means that a page is indexed and eligible to appear in Google Search with a normal snippet. Google says there are no additional technical requirements or special optimizations, and meeting its requirements does not guarantee crawling, indexing, or serving.4
Google Search Central says AI Overviews and AI Mode use the same foundational SEO best practices as Google Search, with no additional technical requirements or special optimizations.4
Google's public guidance covers these Search surfaces; how a business can appear in AI search results covers the broader provider question.
How is AI Mode different from AI Overviews?
Google says AI Mode can handle questions that might previously have taken multiple searches. Its query fan-out technique divides a question into subtopics, searches them across multiple data sources, and combines the results.6 Google also warns that AI responses may contain mistakes.56
Google also says AI Mode and AI Overviews may use different models and techniques, so their responses and links may differ.4
Can AI Mode handle local-business tasks?
Google documents AI Mode for local tasks such as researching service costs, finding open appointment slots, checking nearby inventory, and making reservations.7 This page does not treat those examples as a local-ranking or recommendation rule.
Google says AI Mode may gather information across the web, complete forms, or call businesses when information is not available online. Google also warns that AI responses may contain mistakes, so important information should be checked in more than one place, including supporting links and other Search results.756
For the profile-specific question, how Google Business Profile integrates with AI search covers the documented profile sources and the limits of assuming that one profile field feeds every generated answer.
What should a local business compare across these surfaces?
Compare the evidence each surface exposes, not one blended AI-search score. Record the exact query or prompt, surface, location context, date, answer, and source links when they are shown.
| What you are checking | Record | Do not infer |
|---|---|---|
| A local result in classic Search | Query, search location, result surface, and date | A citywide or permanent position from one location-specific observation |
| A supporting link in an AI Overview or AI Mode response | Exact prompt, surface, answer, displayed link, and date | That the link supplied every claim or will appear in a future response |
| Website eligibility for an AI supporting link | Indexing and normal Search snippet eligibility | That eligibility guarantees crawling, indexing, or serving.4 |
| A local task in AI Mode | The task, business details shown, date, and any confirmation from the business | That the task result is a ranking signal or a guaranteed recommendation |
This record keeps the three rows in the comparison table honest. It also prevents a classic local-result observation from being presented as an AI answer, or an AI link observation from being presented as a Google-issued local rank.
