Google Business Profile service areas for mobile auto-repair businesses

By Sergey Sulimko, Founder7 min read

A mobile auto-repair business should choose a storefront, service-area, or hybrid profile from where customers receive the repair, use named dispatch areas rather than a radius, and keep Section 609 checks attached to paid motor-vehicle air-conditioning work.123

The general service-area answer covers Google's shared limits and editing path. For auto repair, the key decision is whether customers bring vehicles to a staffed garage, a technician brings the work to them, or the shop does both. The category guidance covers the broader category decision; this page keeps the mobile-repair and vehicle-service checks together.

Which Google Business Profile model fits a mobile auto-repair business?

Start with where the vehicle is repaired, not with the size of the territory. Google describes an auto-repair shop with a repair garage and roadside service as a hybrid service-area business when the location is staffed and able to receive customers during its stated hours.2

Auto-repair reality Profile model What to enter or verify
A technician travels to customer vehicles, and the base does not receive repair customers Service-area business Hide the base address from customers and name the places where the mobile crew accepts repair calls. Keep one profile for the whole area served.12
Customers bring vehicles to a repair garage, and the team also handles roadside or mobile work Hybrid business Show the real garage address and add the named service area. Keep the location staffed and able to receive customers during its stated hours.2
The business serves customers at its address but has no permanent on-site signage Service-area business Do not present the location as a storefront. Google says a business without permanent on-site signage is not eligible as a storefront.12
Separate staffed repair locations have separate teams and territories One profile for each qualifying location Tie each profile to its own staffed location, team, and service area rather than making extra profiles for cities served by one crew.2

If customers do not bring vehicles to the base, remove the address and enter only the service area. If customers are received at the garage and the team also travels, enter both the address and service area.1 A roadside-only crew should not list a borrowed or virtual office as its storefront: Google says to use an actual operating location, and a virtual office is not eligible unless it is staffed during business hours.2

How should a mobile auto-repair business choose its named service areas?

For a mobile auto-repair crew, each selected city or postal code should be a place where the crew accepts the advertised repair call. Google lets a Business Profile include up to 20 named service areas, not a radius, so use the dispatch territory rather than a circle drawn around the garage.1

Use the service-area field as a record of the mobile crew's actual operating territory:

  1. Compare each proposed area with the current dispatch schedule and the kinds of vehicle work the crew accepts there.
  2. Remove an area when the business no longer sends technicians there or cannot take the advertised repair call.
  3. Keep the overall boundary generally within about two hours of driving time from the business base. Google allows that a wider territory can fit some businesses, so this is coverage guidance, not a promise of a fixed radius.2
  4. If the business has another staffed location with its own team and territory, assess that location for its own profile instead of stretching one profile across both crews.2

Google does not allow a radius as the service-area setting. If an older profile still uses a radius, Google says it cannot be edited; replace it with named places from Google's selector. An approved change may take as long as 48 hours to appear, so check the saved profile after that display window.1

What belongs in an auto-repair profile's service area, categories, and Services?

Put geography in Service area, the shop's identity in categories, and repair work in Services. A service area does not replace a category, and a category does not list every repair the business offers.245

Profile field Auto-repair use Check before publishing
Service area Named places covered by the mobile or roadside dispatch territory1 The crew actually accepts the advertised repair work in each place.
Primary category The most specific available description of what the auto-repair business is24 Choose Google's provided category that best describes the business. Do not create a custom category or use one category for every repair type.24
Services The repair work the business actually offers, such as diagnostics, battery work, roadside repair, or air-conditioning service when those are genuine offerings5 Use Google's suggested services or add compliant custom services. Group different types of work when useful, and keep descriptions and prices in their available fields rather than in a custom service name.5
Vehicle-service credential A separate record for regulated work, such as paid motor-vehicle air-conditioning service36 Check the technician and equipment requirements before describing that work publicly.

Google's category guidance says categories should describe what the business is, not every service or product it has. Its Services editor may suggest offerings for the business type, and it allows custom services, groups, descriptions, and prices. Google warns that custom service names containing prices or phone numbers, as well as personal information, gibberish, or profanity, will be automatically rejected.245 Keep a service row accurate to the work the mobile team actually performs.

What should an auto-repair business check before listing air-conditioning work?

A person who repairs or services a motor-vehicle air-conditioning system for payment or barter must complete Section 609 training and certification through an EPA-approved program3. Technicians servicing MVAC-like appliances must also be certified.3

The Section 609 requirement is separate from the Google service-area setting. If a mobile crew offers paid motor-vehicle air-conditioning work, verify that the people performing it meet the federal training and certification rule. The EPA says approved programs train technicians on servicing equipment, regulatory requirements, refrigerant recovery, and the effects of improper refrigerant handling, and require a knowledge test.3

For service involving refrigerant in an MVAC, the federal servicing rule requires approved equipment and a properly trained and certified technician. It also requires training and certification for service involving refrigerant in an MVAC-like appliance.6 Keep this boundary clear:

  • List air-conditioning service in Google Services only when the business actually offers it.
  • Verify Section 609 certification for every technician who performs the paid MVAC work, rather than treating a profile category as a credential.3
  • Do not describe Section 609 as a qualification for every automotive repair unless the record supports that broader statement.3

What should a mobile auto-repair owner verify before saving the profile?

Audit question Pass condition Record to verify
Does the profile model match customer access? Customers are served at the garage, at their vehicles, or both, and the address and service area reflect that reality.12 Whether the base receives vehicles, has permanent signage, and is staffed during stated hours.
Do the named areas match dispatch? Each named area is a place where the crew accepts the advertised auto-repair work. Current dispatch territory, travel limits, and technician coverage.
Are categories and Services separate? The category describes the business overall, while Services lists actual repair offerings.245 The selected category and saved Services menu.
Is air-conditioning work supported? Each technician performing paid MVAC work has the required Section 609 training and certification, and the covered work uses approved equipment.36 EPA-approved certification records and servicing-equipment records.
Has the saved setting appeared? The profile has been checked after Google's stated approval display window.1 The saved Business Profile and the date of the edit.

For a mobile auto-repair business, the service area is a dispatch record, not a substitute for the shop's identity or a federal work credential.
