Review velocity
Review velocity, also called review frequency, is the rate at which a business gains new customer reviews during a chosen period, usually expressed as new reviews per week or per month.
Review velocity is a flow measure, not the total number of reviews a profile has accumulated.12 It also differs from review recency, which asks when the latest review arrived.1 Calculate it by dividing the number of new reviews in a selected window by the number of weeks or months in that window. For example, 24 new reviews over 3 months equals 8 reviews per month. Keep the unit and period consistent when comparing windows.1
Google's local-ranking help does not name review velocity as a local-ranking factor, set a target rate, or publish a universal recency window. Google says local results mainly reflect relevance, distance, and popularity, while the relevant section itself calls the third dimension prominence. The guidance says review count and positive ratings can help local ranking, but it does not publish a review-arrival formula or promise that a specific rate changes position.3 Use review velocity as a description of review activity, not as a Google target.
Seasonality matters when interpreting the number. A seasonal business should compare current review activity with the same season in prior years before interpreting a quiet period.4
The reviews behind the rate must come from genuine customer experiences. Google permits asking for reviews when a business offers no incentive and does not influence the rating or content. Its Rating Manipulation policy prohibits:
- fake engagement or paid or incentivized reviews;
- unusual review volumes or patterns that indicate rating manipulation;
- content based on a conflict of interest, including current or former employment, contractual or consultancy relationships, or professional or personal affiliations such as industry competitors or familial relationships;
- discouraging negative reviews or selectively soliciting positive reviews;
- pressuring people to post a review while on the premises;
- requesting specific review content; and
- asking merchants' staff to solicit a certain number of reviews.
That boundary rules out review gating and belongs with the wider Google reviews guidance. Use a neutral review request that leaves the rating and words to the customer.5
