Troubleshooting

Why are my Local Services Ads showing in the wrong locations?

By Sergey Sulimko, Founder6 min read

Start with the Service areas card in Local Services Ads under Profile & Budget.[^1] Then read the full search query. An ad can appear to someone outside a selected area when the query names that area.[^2] If those checks do not explain the location, inspect the linked Business Profile. When locations do not display correctly or the link or sync has a problem, correct an incorrect address first, select the right business group, then unlink and relink; Google says synchronization can take 24 to 72 hours.[^1]

Google documents two location matches: the searcher's estimated location at the time of the search, and a location named in the search query.[^2] That means an unexpected location is not automatically a changed setting or a platform incident. A saved LSA service area, a linked Business Profile problem, or the dated but unconfirmed incident report may be the better branch.

Compare the location shown in the ad with your saved LSA service areas, the searcher's estimated location, and the words in the query before changing anything.

What you observed Diagnostic branch Check now Next action
The searcher is estimated to be inside a selected area Normal location matching Compare the displayed location with the selected city, county, or ZIP code Keep the setting unless another detail is wrong [^2]
The searcher is outside the selected area, but the query names that area Normal query matching Read the full query, including the city or service area Treat the impression as a documented match [^2]
The ad shows a city, county, or ZIP code not saved in LSA Saved LSA setting Open Profile & Budget and inspect Service areas and Job types Correct the LSA setting and save it [^1][^2]
LSA settings are correct, but the linked profile or location is wrong Business Profile affiliation or synchronization Check the matched profile, address, and profile service area Correct a wrong address in the Business Profile first. If a different profile is matched, contact support; for a link, sync, or display problem, choose the right business group and unlink and relink the profile [^1][^3][^4]
The setting, query, and linked profile all check out, but the pattern continues Account-specific issue or unconfirmed incident [^5] Keep the exact query, displayed location, and account settings together Contact Local Services Ads support

This is a diagnostic sequence, not a claim about which cause is most common. Start with the least expensive observable check, then move to account affiliation and support.

Did a saved Local Services Ads service area or job type change?

LSA service areas choose the cities or ZIP codes where an ad can show, while job types choose the kinds of leads or searches it can match.[^1][^2]

On desktop, review the saved controls in this order:

  1. Sign in to the Local Services Ads lead inbox.
  2. Open the menu in the top left.
  3. Select Profile & Budget.
  4. Select the pencil icon on the Service areas card.
  5. Review Include these service areas and Exclude these service areas. Add or remove a county, city, or ZIP code as needed.
  6. Select Save, then review the Job Types and Industries settings in the same profile area.[^1][^2]

Google says changes to job types or service areas can change the types of searches that trigger the ad, and that a change may take a few hours to go live.[^1] Check the saved list, not only the location that appeared in one impression.

Job types are not an all-leads stop control. Google says that deselecting every job type does not stop leads for the overall category. Pause the ad when you need to stop all leads.[^1]

Did the search itself name the location?

A person outside your selected area can see your ad when the search names a location you selected.[^2]

Google's example is a person estimated to be in Los Angeles searching for a service plus San Francisco. Because San Francisco was selected as a service area, the ad can match the named location even though the person is not estimated to be there.[^2] Google also notes that a city-level location estimate can extend beyond only the selected postal codes within that city, and that some postal areas belong to more than one city.[^2]

Read the full query before editing the account. If the query names one of your selected areas, or a postal area or associated city within one, the impression can follow Google's documented location matching.[^2] If it names an area with no such relationship, continue to the linked Business Profile check rather than assuming the query explains it.

Is the linked Google Business Profile wrong or out of sync?

If locations do not display correctly in LSA, correct an incorrect Business Profile address first, select the right business group, then unlink and relink the profile. Google says synchronization can take 24 to 72 hours.[^1]

Work through the two Google products separately:

  1. Check that the LSA account is matched to the intended public and verified Google Business Profile. If Google matched a different profile, use the support path rather than creating another profile.[^3]
  2. If the address is wrong, verify and update it in the Business Profile before relinking LSA.[^1]
  3. Check the Business Profile's own service area. Open the profile, choose Edit profile, choose Location, select Edit beside Service area, select or enter the areas, and choose Save. Google allows up to 20 service areas and says an approved edit can take up to 48 hours to show on the profile.[^4]
  4. Return to the LSA account, choose the correct business group, and unlink and relink the Business Profile. Allow the documented synchronization window before judging the result.[^1]

The LSA Service areas card and the Business Profile Service area control are separate checks. Updating one does not remove the need to inspect the other.[^1][^4]

Is this the reported Google incident?

Treat a location pattern as an unconfirmed incident only after the saved settings, search match, and linked Business Profile have been checked.

On October 1, 2026, Search Engine Roundtable reported apparent Local Services Ads showing for advertisers that had not selected the locations where the ads appeared. The report said Google had not confirmed a bug and mentioned automatic targeting expansion as another possible explanation.[^5]

That report is a reason to document the observation and contact support, not a confirmed platform cause or a guaranteed fix. The official Google guidance remains the authority for the settings, location matching, affiliation, and synchronization checks above.

What should I do when none of these checks explains the location?

Contact Local Services Ads support after the LSA settings, query match, and Business Profile affiliation all check out.

Take the selected service areas, the full query, the location shown in the ad, and the matched Business Profile with you when you contact support. Record the time you checked them separately. Google's Business Affiliation guidance says to connect with the Support team when Google finds a Business Profile that is not the one you want or when the account is incorrectly linked.[^3]

Common questions

Does removing every job type stop all Local Services Ads leads?
No. Google says the overall category can still produce leads when every job type is deselected. Pause the ad when the goal is to stop all leads.
How is an LSA service area different from a Business Profile service area?
They are separate controls in separate Google products. LSA service areas control the areas selected for the ad, while the Business Profile service area describes where the business serves customers.
