Choose a tracker that names its AI surfaces, preserves the exact prompt or query, records location and date context, stores the cited URL or source, and lets you repeat and export the run. Microsoft's Bing Webmaster Tools report says cited-page and page-level citation metrics describe observed citation activity; they do not establish ranking, authority, or placement. Google's Search Console Generative AI performance report counts impressions when links to a site appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. These are citation or linked-impression observations; keep traffic, sales, and causal attribution in separate outcome records.
What should a tracker measure first?
Start by naming the decision the measurement is meant to support. A tracker that reports AI-search visibility should show where an answer was observed and what source it used, and distinguish that citation record from a direct local-result position. A local rank tracker should show where a Google result was observed. First-party reports expose reported generative-AI impressions or Business Profile actions: Google Search Console reports generative-AI impressions when links to a site appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode,2 while Business Profile performance reports profile views, searches, and actions such as calls or website clicks.5
| Measurement | Evidence to require | What it can establish |
|---|---|---|
| AI-search visibility | Named engine or surface, exact prompt or query, date, and cited URL or source | Your business or site was observed in the recorded AI answer or source set. |
| Google local visibility | Query, map point or coordinate, grid and radius, and scan time | A local-result position or visibility value at the recorded point. |
| Google generative-AI performance | Search Console property, final linked URL, date, country, device, and search-type filter | Impressions when links to your site appeared in Google's generative-AI features. |
| Business Profile response | Profile, date range, views, searches, calls, website clicks, directions, messages, or completed bookings when the booking provider is used5 | Reported discovery and profile actions. |
| Business outcome | Your booking, call, sales, or CRM record with its own attribution rules | A downstream business result. It needs evidence beyond a tracker observation. |
The AI search hub gives the wider vocabulary. The useful buying decision here is narrower: choose a record you can inspect and repeat, not a blended score whose inputs are hidden.
Which AI-search surfaces should a tracker cover?
Ask the vendor to name each surface included in the plan and in the export. Microsoft's Bing AI Performance report covers Microsoft Copilot, AI-generated summaries in Bing, and selected partner integrations. It reports how often site content was cited, which URLs were referenced, and how citation activity changed over time.1
Google Search Console's Generative AI performance report covers Google AI Overviews and AI Mode. Google reports the data by final linked URL, country, date, and device, with search type available as a filter. It reports generative-AI impressions when links to your site are shown in the feature.2
Those are different surfaces and different records. A product page that says “AI visibility” without naming the engine, feature, and source fields leaves the most important comparison unanswered. The AI search hub puts named Bing views alongside other surfaces; it is not evidence that every tracker measures every AI answer.
What should I check about prompts and queries?
Require the exact prompt or query portfolio, not only a visibility percentage. Keep the wording, language, location context, device context, and portfolio version beside each run. A change in the question can change the answer and the sources, so a percentage without its question set is hard to interpret.
Bing's Topics Portfolio groups grounding queries into topics and separates your own grounding queries from opportunity queries. Bing describes topic size, sites cited, and query counts as approximate signals over one-, two-, or three-month windows. Topics are AI-classified and may be unavailable when there is not enough data, so use the view for directional planning rather than as a precise citation ledger.3
| Query check | Ask for this record |
|---|---|
| Portfolio | The exact prompts or keywords, including version and language. |
| Surface | The engine and feature that answered each prompt. |
| Context | The location, device, signed-in state, or other setting that can affect the answer. |
| Result | The answer capture or source list, including the cited URL when one is shown. |
| Comparison | The unchanged portion of the portfolio used for the next run. |
The Google Maps guide and Google Map Pack guide cover the same discipline for Google map grids and local-result placement. Do not substitute their keyword lists for an AI prompt portfolio. They sample different systems.
How important are location and date controls?
They are part of the measurement, not display preferences. For a Google local-rank scan, record the business location, map centre, point coordinates, grid size, radius, keyword, and scan time. Google says local results are mainly based on relevance, distance, and popularity; distance is how far each business is from the searching customer, and when the customer does not share where they are, Google uses what it knows about their location.4
For an AI-search run, record the location and language supplied to the system, the device when relevant, the prompt, the date, and the time zone. Google Search Console assigns report dates to Pacific Time. Its newest data can be preliminary, and its export converts some tilde or dash values to zero, so preserve the original export context when you compare periods.2
The live AI search guide covers first-party Google measurement in more detail. This page adds the buyer's question: whether a tracker exposes enough context to make one run comparable with the next.
What should each result record?
Before buying, open one sample report or request a sample export. The minimum useful record is different for each measurement, but it should be possible to trace a headline value back to the run that produced it.
| Record | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Engine and feature | “AI visibility” can mean a Bing citation, a Google AI Mode link, or another surface. |
| Exact prompt or query | The wording defines the question that was sampled. |
| Answer or source URL | A citation observation should show what was cited, not only that a citation existed. |
| Location and device context | Local and personalized results can change with context. |
| Run date, time, and time zone | You need a dated observation before comparing it with another one. |
| Settings and portfolio version | Grid, radius, query set, and other controls explain changes in the result. |
| Exportable raw fields | You can retain, audit, and compare the evidence outside the vendor's summary view. |
If a vendor cannot show which fields are retained, treat the score as a summary for that vendor's interface. Do not present it as a complete record of AI visibility or local rank.
Can a tracker combine AI citations and Google Maps positions?
It can place them in one report, but the labels and evidence must stay separate. Use a table like this when comparing a product's claims with the measurement you need.
| Metric | The question it answers | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| AI citation or source inclusion1 | Was this business or URL shown as a source in the recorded AI answer? | A universal AI rank, future inclusion, traffic, or a customer. |
| Google generative-AI impression2 | Were links to this site shown in Google's generative-AI feature for the reporting property? | Every unlinked mention, a map position, or a sale. |
| Google Maps position4 | What local result appeared at this query and map point? | The result at another point or for another searcher's location. The check records the sampled map point, not a citywide position.4 |
| Business Profile action5 | Did the profile record a view, call, website click, direction request, message, or completed booking when the booking provider is used? | A confirmed sale or causal credit to one tracker observation. |
| Customer outcome | Did the business record a call, booking, or sale under its own attribution method? | That the preceding AI or map observation caused it. |
Google’s Business Profile performance report can show profile views, searches, and actions such as calls, website clicks, directions, messages, and completed bookings when the booking provider is used. It is a first-party performance report, not a local-rank or AI-citation report.5
Google Search Console documents generative-AI impressions and final linked URLs for its report. Search Engine Roundtable reported on October 15, 2026 that Google's AI performance reports still did not expose click data after link changes in AI Mode and AI Overviews.13 Treat impressions, citations, source URLs, prompts, and run context as observation fields, not clicks. Store clicks, traffic, sales, and customer outcomes in separate records.
How can I tell whether the measurement is repeatable?
Look for fixed settings, run history, and a way to compare like with like. A good tracker lets you keep the prompt or keyword, location, device, date window, and surface visible. It lets you distinguish a changed input from a changed result.
Repeatability does not mean that an AI answer will be identical every time. A 2026 study sampling Perplexity Search, OpenAI SearchGPT, and Google Gemini found that repeated answers and citation rankings could vary, then recommended uncertainty estimates. The study collected daily samples over nine days and repeated collections at ten-minute intervals across three consumer-product topics, so use its lesson about variation rather than generalizing its exact rates to every engine or local business.6
For a Google grid, repeat the same point layout, radius, keyword set, and schedule. For AI search, repeat the same prompt portfolio and context, then retain each run rather than replacing it with a single average. A useful report shows the number of runs behind a percentage and the range or uncertainty around it.
What should I check before buying a tracker?
Use this checklist in a product demo or trial:
- Named surfaces: Does the product identify the AI engine and feature, or only say “AI visibility”?
- Prompt and query control: Can you inspect the exact prompts or keywords and keep a versioned portfolio?
- Location context: Can you record map points for local grids and location or language context for AI runs?
- Date control: Are the date, time zone, schedule, and reporting window visible?
- Source records: Can you open the answer, cited URL, or source list behind the summary?
- Export: Does the export retain the raw fields needed to audit one run later?
- Repeatability: Can you rerun the same inputs, compare the runs, and see uncertainty or variation?
- Metric separation: Does the report keep AI citations, Google Maps positions, first-party impressions, profile actions, and customer outcomes in separate fields?
Local Falcon describes its AI Mode feature as tracking keywords that trigger inclusion and showing business references and the sites, reviews, or content referenced by Google AI Mode. Treat that as a vendor capability description and verify the actual engines, query fields, locations, run history, and exports in the plan you would buy.7 Its local-rank documentation separately describes grid sizes, radius, recurring scans, and historical data. That separation is the right model for comparing the two measurements.8
BrightLocal's current Local AI Visibility Tracker describes coverage for Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, and ChatGPT, with prompt- and location-level reporting and source details.12 That is a vendor capability description, not an independent citation ledger. BrightLocal's separate future-platform roadmap page uses page-specific labels such as “LIVE in LABS” and “coming soon”; do not transfer those labels to the current tracker.10
BrightLocal's Local Search Grid describes ranking observations at specific map points and warns that no tool exactly replicates a person's complete search history.9
Maps Agent's public pricing page lists Autopost, AI Team, and Partner. The AI Team tier includes a rank report described as a “position grid on your keywords, with competitors.”11 That is a keyword position-grid report, not documentation of an AI-citation ledger. For an AI-search visibility requirement, compare that stated offer with your measurement checklist and ask for named AI surfaces and run-level source records. The page says every tier is month to month, with no contract, and that cancellation is one button in the account or an email.11

Common questions
- Is an AI citation the same as a Google Maps ranking?
- No. Microsoft's Bing AI Performance report treats an AI citation as source inclusion in a recorded generative answer. A Google Maps ranking is a local-result observation at a query and location. They answer different questions and should not share one blended label.
- Does Google Search Console show every AI citation?
- No. Google's Generative AI performance report counts impressions when links to a site appear in Google's generative-AI features. It is a report of linked impressions in Google's generative-AI features, not a report of other AI systems.
- Does one prompt prove AI visibility?
- No. Bing's AI Performance report says its citation data is a sample of overall citation activity, so one prompt is one observation for one surface, context, and date. A useful visibility record repeats a defined prompt portfolio and keeps each run so variation is visible.
- Do Business Profile actions prove that a tracker caused a customer?
- No. Google's Business Profile performance report can report actions such as calls, clicks, directions, messages, and completed bookings when the booking provider is used. A sale or causal connection needs the business's own booking, call, sales, or CRM evidence.
