How do I measure local AI-search visibility across countries?

Short answer

Measure each country as a dated, matched observation, not as one universal ranking: use Google Search Console's Generative AI performance report for Google AI Overviews and AI Mode impressions, log direct checks for other surfaces, and keep mentions, citations, clicks, and conversions separate.

What should count as local AI-search visibility in one country?

A country-level visibility record should separate what an AI response said, which URL it cited, what Google counted as an impression or click, and what business action followed.

Google Search Console defines a generative-AI impression as a link to a site shown in a generative AI feature on Google Search. Its Countries dimension groups the data by the country where the search originated.1 That measure does not count every unlinked mention of a business.

Use this map to keep unlike evidence from becoming one score:

Measure Record What it can tell you What it cannot tell you
Direct response observation Exact prompt, country and location, language, device, surface or model, timestamp, answer, business mention, and cited URL What one named surface returned under stated conditions Permanent inclusion or a universal ranking
Google AI-feature impression Country, date range, device, property or page grouping, and impressions How often Google showed a link to the site in an AI Overview or AI Mode result1 Unlinked mentions or visibility on another provider
Search click Search Console report, date range, query or page cohort, clicks, impressions, and click-through rate Clicks from Google Search under the report's definitions4 Which AI surface caused every Web click
Business key event Stable event definition, country, reporting window, and event count A downstream business action reported in Analytics56 Causation by one AI response

The AI search hub keeps Google generative features separate from other answer surfaces. The competitive visibility gap is useful when comparing two bounded observations, but it is not a universal rank.

How do I use Google data for a country-by-country comparison?

Use Search Console's Generative AI performance report for Google AI Overviews and AI Mode impressions, then preserve the country, date, device, and grouping settings that produced the comparison.

Google's Generative AI performance report includes AI Overviews and AI Mode. It can group data by country, page, date, and device, and its dates use Pacific Time.1 For a Google-only comparison, export the same report dimensions for every country and keep the selected period, search type, filters, property or page grouping, and export date with the data.

Google says the report's newest data can be preliminary and may change during the next few hours.1 Treat the latest country comparison as provisional when the report marks it preliminary. For the broader Google AI Overview and click procedure, see how to measure AI Overview visibility and clicks.

The report may not appear when a site has not received enough impressions in Google's generative AI features, and Search Console excludes Search Labs experiments.1 A missing report is therefore not evidence of zero visibility.

What should I log when I check another AI-search surface?

Log the same observation fields for every country and surface: prompt, searcher context, language, device, model or surface, timestamp, answer, mention, cited URL, and click.

Google says AI Mode and AI Overviews can use different models and techniques, so their responses and links can vary. Google also says AI Overviews often do not trigger because they appear only when its systems determine that they add value beyond classic Search.2 Treat a direct check as one observation of one surface at one time.

For each fixed prompt, save these fields in one row:

  1. Prompt and intent: keep the exact local question and the service or category it tests.
  2. Searcher context: record country, city or other location supplied to the surface, language, device, and timestamp.
  3. Surface: name the provider, product surface, model when shown, and whether the response was an AI Overview, AI Mode, or another answer surface.
  4. Response evidence: record whether the answer appeared, whether the business was mentioned, whether a URL was linked, which URL was cited, and whether the link was clicked.
  5. Repeat context: keep the same prompt set and observation fields for the comparison window.

Google warns that a repeated query may produce a different result because Search results depend on time, place, device, and the searcher's recent history.3 A country comparison is stronger when those conditions are fixed and visible in the log. If structured data is the specific question, how to measure schema markup and AI citations covers that narrower measurement.

How do I compare countries without turning the result into a ranking?

Compare matched observations over a stated period and report the denominator and surface, rather than labeling one country's observed count a universal AI-search rank.

Keep these outputs separate when you report the result:

  1. Direct observations: record the feature-appearance rate separately from presence among the responses that appeared. Keep “not shown” separate from “shown but absent,” then report the business-mention or linked-URL share with the prompt set and conditions stated.
  2. Linked Google visibility: Search Console impressions and clicks for the selected country and reporting window.
  3. Downstream action: Analytics visits or key events for the same country and period.

Search Console defines average position as a relative average, not a universal order of citations. In an AI Overview, all links in the overview receive the same position, and a click on an external page in AI Mode counts as a click.4 Keep position as a Search Console metric and do not use it as citation order.

Compare like with like: the same prompt set, location convention, language, device, surface, date range, and denominator. Keep each provider and surface as its own series. If one country has direct observations while another has only Search Console impressions, present two different evidence types instead of combining them.

How do I connect AI visibility to business actions by country?

Define one stable Google Analytics 4 (GA4) key event before the comparison window, break it down by country, and report it as a downstream signal rather than proof that one AI response caused it.

Google Analytics detail reports can break data down by dimensions such as the country someone is visiting from.5 Country is a reporting dimension, not proof of a visitor's exact physical location or of causation from one answer.

Choose the action before comparing countries, such as a form submission, booking request, or call-start event. Create or identify that event and mark it as a key event before the reporting window. Google says marking an event as a key event affects reports from the time of creation and does not change historic data.6

Then keep the event definition, country dimension, date range, and attribution wording stable. Report that a country had a given downstream event count during the window. Do not claim that a specific AI response caused the event unless separate evidence supports that attribution.

What does a missing report or an untriggered AI Overview mean?

A missing Generative AI report or an untriggered AI Overview does not prove zero local AI-search visibility.

Google says the Generative AI report can be absent when a site has not received enough generative-AI impressions, and it excludes Search Labs experiments.1 Google also says AI Overviews often do not trigger because they appear only when they add value beyond classic Search.2 Record those states as limits of the observation, not as a zero result.

Common questions

No. Google defines the impression as a link to a site shown in a generative AI feature, so an unlinked business mention belongs in the direct-observation log instead.
