How do I create local SEO for my business?

By Sergey Sulimko, Founder

Create local SEO by claiming or creating your Google Business Profile, choosing the business representation that matches how customers meet you, completing Google's verification, and keeping the profile and website accurate. Ask for genuine reviews without incentives, then track profile actions and Search Console trends over a chosen period. Google does not promise a fixed local position, so measure customer actions and changes over time.

How do I start local SEO if I do not have a Google Business Profile?

Start by checking Google Search and Google Maps for the business name and city. Use the branch that matches what you find. Google says only businesses eligible for a Business Profile can add or claim a location, and adding or claiming it is free.

What you find What to do next
No Business Profile exists Go to Google's Business Profile add page, click Add your business to Google, enter the business details, and select an available verification option.
An unverified profile exists Open Google Maps, search the business name and city, select Claim this business, select Manage now, then choose a verification option and follow Google's instructions.
A verified profile belongs to someone else Request ownership from the current profile owner.

The Google Business Profile hub explains the profile itself, and the Google Business Profile setup answer covers the creation flow in more detail. The important first decision is whether you are adding a new profile, claiming an existing unverified profile, or requesting access to a verified one.

What should I do if someone else owns my Google Business Profile?

Request ownership from the current profile owner. For a storefront or hybrid business, Google directs you to start at business.google.com/add, enter the business name and address, and choose the business. Select Request Access, fill out the form, and select Submit.

For a service-area business that provides services at customers' locations without a physical shop or office, Google directs you to contact support. Enter Transfer ownership of listing in Tell us what we can help with, then select the same text as the issue description. Google sends the current owner an email notification. The owner has 3 days to respond. If there is no response after 3 days, Google says you may have the option to claim the profile. Use the ownership route that matches the business model.

How do I verify my business location on Google?

Select one of the verification methods Google makes available and follow the on-screen instructions. Google automatically determines the methods and does not let you change them manually. Availability depends on the business type, public information, region, or business hours. Some businesses need more than one method. If Google offers phone or text verification, you must be able to answer the business phone or receive texts. Google says interactive voice response (IVR) systems will not get the code.

After the verification steps are complete, Google reviews the submitted information. Google says verification reviews take up to 5 business days, although rare reviews may take longer.

If Google offers postcard verification, enter the mailed code on the profile when it arrives. Most codes arrive within 14 days and expire after 30 days. While waiting, do not edit the business name, address, or category, and do not request a new code. Google says a new request invalidates the code already in the mail.

Which Google Business Profile details should I complete first?

Complete the core facts that tell customers what the business is, where it serves them, and how to contact it. Google says you can edit a verified profile's address, hours, contact information, and photos to keep the information accurate and current.

Profile detail Google-bound rule
Business name Use the name exactly as it appears on real-world signage, stationery, and other branding.
Address Enter the full and accurate address. If customers are not served at the address, choose not to show it.
Hours Set main hours. Add special hours for holidays or other temporary periods, and more hours when different features have different schedules.
Phone Add the primary number and up to 2 additional mobile or landline numbers. Additional numbers cannot be fax numbers.
Website Enter the full URL with an HTTP or HTTPS scheme, and make sure Googlebot is not blocked.
Photos Keep the profile's photos current along with the other customer-facing details.

Keep the business name tied to the real-world branding, and keep hours, phone, website, address, and service area in their own profile fields so each fact stays clear to customers.

How should I choose my Google Business Profile category?

Choose the most specific primary category Google offers that best describes what the business is. If the specific category is unavailable, choose a general category that accurately describes the business. Google does not let you create a custom category.

Use only a few additional categories for relevant departments or services, not one category for every product or service. The first category field is the primary category, and Google allows up to 9 additional categories. All locations of one business must share the same primary category. An independent, public-facing department that is separately owned and operated should have its own profile instead of becoming a category on the main profile.

Adding or editing an existing category might trigger another verification request. If the category is wrong, make the correction with the expectation that Google may ask you to verify the business again. The Google Business Profile category guide explains the category decision in more detail.

How do I set a service area without showing my address?

Use a service area only when the business is a service-area or hybrid business. A service-area business visits or delivers to customers directly but does not serve them at its business address. A hybrid business serves customers at its business address and also visits or delivers to them.

If a hybrid business does not have permanent on-site signage, Google says it is not eligible as a storefront and should be listed as a service-area business. If customers are not served at the business address, remove the address from the Business Profile. A hybrid business that serves customers at its address can show that address and set a service area.

Google lets a profile use up to 20 service areas based on cities, postal codes, or another area type. A new service area cannot be set as a radius distance. Google says the overall boundary should be no more than about 2 hours of driving time from the business base. Businesses with age-restricted products or services such as alcohol, cannabis, or weapons need a storefront.

To edit the setting, open Business Profile → Edit profile → Location → Service area → Edit, choose or enter the areas served, and select Save. If Google approves the edit, it may take up to 48 hours to appear. A service-area business has one profile for the whole area it serves, not a separate profile for every city.

What should I fix on my own website for local SEO?

Put the same real business facts on an accessible website and connect the site to the profile. Use a full URL with an HTTP or HTTPS scheme in the profile, make sure Googlebot is not blocked, and use Search Console to check for possible penalties.

Google primarily discovers pages through links from pages it has already crawled. A sitemap can be submitted in Search Console, and some content management systems create one automatically, but Google says a sitemap is not required. Submit one when it helps you describe the URLs you want Google to discover, not because it guarantees indexing.

If you add structured data, make it describe information visible on the page and do not create a blank page just to hold it. Google says required properties are necessary for enhanced-display eligibility. Google also says it is better to supply fewer complete and accurate recommended properties than every possible recommended property with incomplete or inaccurate data. Google recommends JSON-LD when the site's setup allows it. The local SEO website answer covers the website side separately.

How can I ask for Google reviews without breaking the rules?

Ask customers for genuine reviews through a Google review link or QR code. Google allows merchants to encourage content that represents a genuine experience only without incentives or attempts to influence the rating or review contents. Do not pressure customers to leave ratings or reviews while on the premises or request specific content.

Google prohibits payment, discounts, free goods, or services in exchange for a review, a review change, or removal of a negative review. It also prohibits discouraging negative reviews or selectively asking only for positive ones.

Reply to reviews clearly, helpfully, professionally, and conversationally rather than promotionally. Do not publish a reviewer's private information or make a personal attack. When the issue is complex, invite the reviewer to contact the business privately by phone or email, and respond in a timely manner.

How do I measure whether local SEO is working?

Use a repeatable baseline with two Google reports:

  1. In the verified Business Profile's Performance report, choose a date range and record the metrics Google exposes for that business: searches, profile views, direction requests, calls, website clicks, and messages. Google says the searches metric updates at the start of each month and may take up to 5 days to appear.
  2. In Search Console, verify site ownership, check whether Google can find and read the pages, and review Search Performance by queries, pages, countries, impressions, and clicks. A sitemap is optional because Google can discover pages without one.
  3. Record the date, the selected range, and the changes made before comparing the next period. Google says changes can take from a few hours to several months to appear, and recommends waiting a few weeks before assessing whether the work helped.

The reports measure discovery and customer actions, not a guaranteed position. For a separate method of checking map observations, see how to track local search rankings. If you want a separate starting check before editing, you can request a free Visibility Score.

What can local SEO promise, and what can it not promise?

Google says local results are mainly based on relevance, distance, and popularity. Google also says there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking. Treat those statements as boundaries, not as a formula that guarantees a result.

Stop or question any local SEO plan that promises one of these outcomes:

  • a guaranteed position in Google Maps or Search;
  • payment to Google for a higher local ranking;
  • payment to make Google crawl a site more often;
  • guaranteed crawling, indexing, or serving of a page; or
  • review incentives, negative-review removal in exchange for payment, or requests limited to happy customers.

You can control the accuracy of the profile, the accessibility of the website, the honesty of review requests, and the way you record changes. You cannot buy or promise the ranking outcome.

Common questions

Is creating or claiming a Google Business Profile free?
Yes. Google says eligible businesses can add or claim a Business Profile at no charge. That covers the Google add-or-claim action itself. Website work, printed review materials, advertising, or help from a service provider are separate decisions.
How long does Google verification take?
Google says a verification review takes up to 5 business days after the verification steps are complete, although rare reviews may take longer. If postcard verification is offered, most codes arrive within 14 days and expire after 30 days.
How many service areas can one profile have?
Google says one Business Profile can have up to 20 service areas. Enter cities, postal codes, or another area type. A new service area cannot use a radius distance, and an approved edit may take up to 48 hours to appear.
Can I pay Google to rank my local business higher?
No. Google says there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking. Local results are mainly based on relevance, distance, and popularity, so no honest provider can guarantee a fixed position.
What should I track after I set up local SEO?
Track the verified Business Profile metrics that apply to the business, including searches, views, directions, calls, website clicks, and messages. Track Search Console queries, pages, countries, impressions, and clicks over the same chosen period, then allow time for changes to appear before judging them.
