Guide
Choosing your Google Business Profile categories
Your primary category is the single field on a Google Business Profile that decides most of what the profile can do: which searches it is eligible for, which attributes and buttons Google offers you, and which competitors you sit next to. Additional categories widen that eligibility a little; they never override the primary one. Pick the primary category that names what the business mainly is, add the others only for services you genuinely deliver, and revisit the list when the business changes.
What the primary category actually changes
Three things follow from it, and none of them is cosmetic.
| What it decides | How you notice |
|---|---|
| Which queries the profile is eligible to appear for | A plumber listed as a general contractor is not in the running for "emergency plumber near me" |
| Which fields Google shows you | Menus, service menus, appointment links, class schedules and "book online" appear only for the categories that support them |
| Which attributes are offered | "Wheelchair accessible entrance", "Online estimates", "Identifies as veteran-owned". The offered set is category-driven1 |
Additional categories add eligibility for their own services, but Google's own guidance is explicit that they should describe the business as a whole and not be used to list every service you touch.2
How to find the exact name Google uses
The category list is a closed vocabulary: you choose from it, and you cannot type your own. The reliable way to find the right entry:
- Open the profile, go to Edit profile → Business information → Category.
- Start typing the plainest word for what the business does ("dentist", not "oral health services").
- Read the suggestions completely before picking. Google's list distinguishes things that sound alike. Dentist and Dental clinic, Auto repair shop and Auto body shop are separate entries, and they are not interchangeable.
- If nothing fits exactly, choose the closest broader entry. An inaccurate specific category is worse than an accurate general one.
Do not stuff the category field, and do not put keywords in the business name. Both are named in Google's guidelines for representing your business, and a name that is not the real-world name is one of the fastest routes to a suspension.3
How many additional categories to add
There is no right number. The test is whether a reasonable customer would say the business does that thing as a service, not whether the word is related.
- A plumbing company that also installs water heaters: add Water heater installation & repair. It is a service the business performs.
- The same company adding Bathroom remodeler because it has replaced a sink: do not. It is not what the business is, and it puts the profile in front of people looking for something else.
- A category you add and then never deliver on produces bad reviews, which cost more than the extra eligibility is worth.
When the business changes
Categories are not set-and-forget. Revisit them when you add or drop a service line, when you notice the profile is appearing for the wrong queries, or when Google adds a category that matches better than the compromise you settled for. Editing the primary category can send the profile back through review, so make the change once and deliberately rather than testing several in a week.

Common questions
- Can I change my primary category later?
- Yes. Edit it from **Edit profile → Business information → Category**. The change may be reviewed before it goes live, and the profile's eligibility shifts with it, so change it because the business changed, not to test which one ranks better.
- Do additional categories dilute the primary one?
- Google does not describe them as competing. The primary category carries the most weight; additional ones add eligibility for their own services. The practical risk is not dilution, it is appearing for searches you cannot serve well.
- What if my business genuinely does two different things?
- Pick the one that brings in most of the revenue as the primary category and add the other. If the two are unrelated and each has its own staff, address and customers, they are usually two businesses and Google's guidelines treat them that way.
