How do I write a Google Business Profile description that Google will accept?

By Sergey Sulimko, Founder

Google's current guidance gives a Google Business Profile description a 750-character ceiling and content rules, not a wording formula that guarantees approval. Write accurate, useful details about what the business offers, what makes it special, and how long it has been in business. Do not add URLs, HTML, links, or copy focused on promotions, prices, or sales. A seasonal business may state its operating season, and Google reviews saved edits before updating them live.

What should I include in a Google Business Profile description?

A Google Business Profile description appears in the profile's From the business section. Google's current Edit your Business Profile guidance says to give customers useful information about the business, including its offer, what makes it special, how long it has been in business, and other helpful context. The Google Business Profile hub explains how this field fits with the rest of the profile, while the profile overview shows the other fields customers use.

Include What to write
What the business offers The main services or products customers can get.
What makes the business special A specific difference, such as an independent business, a distinctive service model, or a local connection.
How long the business has operated The true history or year the business began.
Helpful customer context Details about the service schedule, location, mission, history, or seasonal operating period when they genuinely help a customer understand the business.

What is not allowed in a Google Business Profile description?

Google's Guidelines for representing your business on Google require description content to be upfront, honest, relevant, and useful. The guidelines prohibit low-quality, irrelevant, or distracting copy, including misspellings, gimmicky character use, and gibberish.

  • Do not include a URL, HTML code, or a link of any type.
  • Do not make the description focus on a special promotion, price, or sale. Google gives examples such as “Everything on sale, -50%” and “Best bagels in town for $5!”
  • Do not add information with no clear association with the business.
  • Do not include private or confidential information, or ask customers to provide it. Google's overall guidance permits a merchant to post its own phone number, email address, or social handle on its own profile, but the description-specific ban on links still applies.

How many characters can a Google Business Profile description contain?

A Google Business Profile description can contain no more than 750 characters. Draft the description, count it, and trim it until it stays within that limit. The 750-character ceiling applies alongside the rules about links, low-quality copy, and promotion-focused text.

How do I write a clear Google Business Profile description?

Use Google's checklist as a short writing sequence. Keep every detail true for the business and useful to a customer deciding whether the business fits.

  1. List the main services or products the business provides.
  2. Add one concrete detail that distinguishes the business from a generic alternative.
  3. State the real history of the business, if its age helps customers understand it.
  4. Add useful context such as the service model, location, mission, or seasonal operating period.
  5. Remove URLs, HTML, links, sale language, prices used as a promotion, distracting symbols, and anything irrelevant.
  6. Read the result as a customer. Replace broad claims with specific details the business can stand behind.

This pattern can help:

[Business name] is a [type of business] in [location]. The business provides [services or products] and is known for [specific difference]. Serving [community] since [year], the business operates [season or service schedule].

The pattern is a writing aid, not a required Google template. For a related profile field, use the guide to choosing the right Google Business Profile categories when the business needs to separate its main category from the description's customer-facing explanation.

The editor must use the Google Account linked to the Business Profile. A business must add or claim its profile and verify it to show on Search, Maps, and other Google services. Some businesses need verification before they can change information.

  1. Go to the Business Profile in Google Search.
  2. Click Edit profile.
  3. Next to Description, click Edit.
  4. Enter the description.
  5. Check the character limit and content rules, then click Save.

Google reviews the change before updating it live on the profile. Google says profile changes usually take about 10 minutes to show, but some take up to 30 days. That timing is not an approval guarantee, so saving the field submits the description for review rather than guaranteeing immediate publication.

How do I edit the description in Google Maps?

The Google Maps mobile app has a separate path to the same Business description field. The editor must still be opened with the Google Account linked to the profile.

  1. Open the Google Maps app on a mobile device.
  2. At the bottom right, tap Business.
  3. Tap Edit profile.
  4. Change the business description.
  5. Check the character limit and content rules, then tap Save.

Google reviews the saved change before updating the description live. If the profile is not yet claimed and verified, complete that setup when Google requires it before trying to change the field.

Can a seasonal business mention its opening period?

Yes. Google's guidelines expressly allow a seasonal business to say that it is open only during a specific seasonal period in its description. The seasonal exception does not permit URLs, HTML, links, irrelevant or low-quality copy, or a description focused on promotions, prices, or sales.

What does Google's example description show?

Google's official example uses specific customer-facing details about an independent ice cream shop, its location, local appeal, products, service schedule, and invitation to visit. The useful lesson is the level of detail: describe the business people will encounter, what it offers, and when or how customers can use it. The example is illustrative, not a required template.

Common questions

Can I mention a price in a Google Business Profile description?
Google's English guidance does not state a blanket ban on mentioning a price. Its editing guidance says to focus primarily on details about the business instead of details about promotions, prices, or sales. Its representation guidelines prohibit a description that focuses on special promotions, prices, or offer sales, with examples such as “Everything on sale, -50%” and “Best bagels in town for $5!”
