How do I verify my business for Google Voice Search?

By Sergey Sulimko, Founder

Google's Android Voice Search help describes voice as a way to search Google Search, while Business Profile verification is the workflow for owning and editing the profile. Those workflows do not document a separate Voice Search verification step, so verify the Business Profile and treat a voice result as a test, not a verification status.

What does Google Business Profile verification actually verify?

Business Profile verification gives the owner control of the profile's business information. Google says verification is needed to edit information and interact with customers, and that successful verification gives the business ownership of its Business Profile.1 Google's add-or-claim guidance says an added and verified profile can help customers find the business on Google Search and Google Maps.3 Neither page describes a separate registration for Google Voice Search.

How do I start verifying my business?

Start in the Business Profile workflow, not in Voice Search. Sign in to the Google Account associated with the profile, search for the business name and city or my business, add the business if it is missing, claim it if it is unclaimed, and open Get verified.1

  1. Search for the business before creating another profile.
  2. Add the business when no profile exists, or claim the matching unclaimed profile.
  3. Open Get verified on the profile.
  4. Complete the verification method Google presents for that profile.

Google's add-or-claim guidance explains the difference between adding and claiming. Do not use a voice query as a substitute for either step.

Which verification method should I use?

Use the method Google shows. Google automatically determines the available options from factors such as business type, public information, region, and business hours. Owners cannot switch to a preferred method, and some profiles may need more than one method.1

If Google offers Check before continuing
Phone or text You can answer the business phone or receive text messages. An Interactive Voice Response system will not receive the code.1
Email You can use the email address shown in the verification screen.1
Live video call The option is available for the business, you can join during the location's business hours, and you can show the location and evidence that you manage the business.1
Postcard or mail The listed mailing address is correct. Postcard verification is not available for every business. Google says most codes arrive within 14 days, but codes expire after 30 days. Do not edit the business name, address, or category, request a new code, or share the code. Keep it secure.1
Business video You can record and upload a live, unique, unedited, complete video with no breaks, from a mobile device through the Business Profile. Google requires at least 30 seconds and does not allow pre-recorded or offline footage.5

The option shown on one profile may not appear on another. Use the full verification walkthrough when Google offers a method you need to prepare for.

How long does Google take to verify a Business Profile?

Google says verification reviews take up to 5 business days after the verification steps are complete, although rare reviews may take longer. Some profiles may be verified instantly in the cases Google describes.1 The five-business-day window is a review estimate, not a promise that every profile will be verified within that time.

What should I check after the Business Profile is verified?

Compare the public Business Profile with the official website and other relevant public records. Check the business name, category, address or service area, hours, phone number, website, and other facts that a customer could hear or see in a local result.

Google says Business Profile information is compiled from multiple sources, including public web content such as the official website, licensed third-party data, user contributions, and Google's interactions with a local place or business.4 Verification gives the owner control of the profile, but it does not mean that one owner edit overrides every other source. Correct the underlying record that is wrong before treating a voice answer as a data problem.

How can I test Google Voice Search for my business?

On the documented Android phone or tablet workflow, open the Google app, tap the microphone, and use your voice to search Google Search.2 Test a natural query that includes the service and location, such as a nearby or closest-business question.

  1. Keep the wording of the query, the location context, the surface, and the date.
  2. Note whether Google returns the business and whether its name, location or service area, hours, phone number, and website match the current public records.
  3. If a fact is wrong, correct the source record, then repeat the same check after the correction.

Google says business information helps surface relevant local search results across Google, such as Maps and Search.4 A returned result is still one observation for one query and context. It does not prove a separate Voice Search verification state, guarantee a recommendation, or guarantee a particular position.

Common questions

Does verifying a Business Profile guarantee a Google Voice Search recommendation?
No. Google documents verification as control of Business Profile information and describes business information as helping surface relevant local results. The cited Google guidance does not promise that a verified business will be recommended or appear in a particular position in a voice result.
