Competitive Visibility Gap

Definition

In local search, a Competitive Visibility Gap is the observed difference between a named business's presence and named competitors' presence across the same declared queries, locations or grid points, surface, and comparison period.1

The phrase describes a bounded comparison, not a Google ranking factor. NotiQ uses “competitive visibility gap” for a comparison across the same market conditions rather than a single query. A useful record names the target, competitor set, query or category, geography, surface, and time window. A result from one set of conditions should not be presented as a universal position.12

For a hypothetical 3×3 sample, BrightLocal offers 3×3 as a grid size, which yields nine map points by grid arithmetic.2 Under a declared visibility cutoff, suppose competitor C is visible at six points and target business T at two. C's share is 6 ÷ 9 = 66.7%; T's share is 2 ÷ 9 = 22.2%; the observed gap is 44.5 percentage points. This is a sample illustration, not a Google score, a universal share-of-voice value, or a customer measurement.

Google's summary lists relevance, distance, and popularity as the main bases for local results, with a detailed section headed “Prominence.” Google also says its search-algorithm details are confidential and that there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking.3 A Competitive Visibility Gap records an observed comparison; it does not reveal Google's formula or prove why one business appeared ahead.

The nearest metrics answer different questions. Local Falcon's Share of Local Voice counts top-three appearances on the geo-grid being viewed, so it is a named metric with its own cutoff and owner, not a general name for every competitor comparison.4 A geo-grid is one possible observation method; the guide to measuring a Competitive Visibility Gap explains how to declare the comparison, while the local search ranking observation log records one capture's context and limits.

AI visibility and AI citations use another population. AirOps uses this same headword for comparing how often a brand is cited or mentioned with direct competitors across the same prompts; it defines a citation as a linked source and a mention as the brand named in answer text. That is an AI-answer comparison, not local map points, so it should not share a denominator with this local-search comparison.5

Google does not define the exact phrase in its local-ranking guidance. NotiQ is a public source for this headword's local-search usage, while AirOps documents a separate AI-search usage; this bounded definition is Maps Agent's synthesis of the cited sources, not a Google metric.1356
