What is local SEO?
Local SEO is the work that decides whether a business appears when someone nearby searches for what it sells. Google publishes 3 factors behind that placement — relevance, distance and prominence — and everything sold under the name is an attempt to move the 2 of them a business can influence.
What does Google actually say decides local placement?
Three things, defined in one sentence each: relevance is how well a profile matches what someone searched for, distance is how far the business sits from the searcher, and prominence is how well known it is. Maps Agent scores a profile against those in its free Visibility Score audit, and the useful part of the exercise is seeing which of the two movable factors is the weak one.
Is local SEO on-page or off-page?
Both, and a third thing that is neither. On-page is the website. Off-page is what other sites say. The Google Business Profile is a separate surface Google owns, edited directly rather than crawled, and for a business whose customers search on a phone it is usually the one that decides. Advice written for websites treats it as a footnote, which is why so much of it disappoints.
What is a local listing?
A record of the business on a platform that shows businesses by location — Google Business Profile, Apple Business Connect, Bing Places, and the directories beneath them. The listing is what appears in a map result. Its job is to be accurate and consistent, because inconsistent listings are how the same business reads as two different ones.
What is an example of local SEO?
A plumber whose profile carries the wrong primary category is invisible for the searches that matter, and choosing the accurate one changes which results he is eligible for at all. That is local SEO in one move. The rest is the same shape: a specific, checkable fact about the business made correct on the surface a search engine reads.
What is a local keyword?
A search that carries a place, explicitly or by implication. "Emergency plumber Sacramento" names one; "plumber near me" and a plain "plumber" typed on a phone imply one, and Google supplies the location. This is why keyword lists built for national search misdescribe local demand — most of the volume never types the city at all.
Is local SEO still relevant?
The mechanics have not changed and the reading surface has. Google's three factors still decide the local pack, while a growing share of the same questions is answered by an AI assistant summarising the profile data rather than by a list of links. Both read the same fields, which is why accuracy has become worth more than activity.
Is local SEO worth it for every business?
No, and the honest test is where customers come from. A trade whose buyers search on a phone near their location is decided in the local pack, and everything else follows from that. A business that runs on referral and repeat custom is buying much less than the category's marketing implies, and should hear that before paying anyone.
What are the three pillars of local SEO?
Depending on who is talking, either Google's own three factors or the industry's rough split into the profile, the website and citations. The first is documented and the second is a convention. When a vendor names three pillars, ask which set they mean, because the two lists imply completely different work.

Common questions
- What does local SEO mean for a small business?
- Being findable at the moment someone nearby needs what it sells. In practice that resolves to a correct, complete Google Business Profile with the right primary category and a review history that keeps moving — before any of the work that touches the business's own website.
- Is local SEO free?
- Every action inside a Google Business Profile is free to whoever owns the listing, so the answer is yes in the sense that matters. What is not free is the hour a week and the discipline to keep doing it in the months the business is busy, which is what people are actually paying for.
- Is local SEO profitable to sell as a service?
- That is a different question from whether it works, and mixing them is how the category earned its reputation. What matters to a buyer is which of the four areas — profile, website, listings, reviews — a given price covers, since the word is used for all four.
- Does local SEO work for a service-area business?
- Yes, and differently. A business that travels to customers competes on a map rather than at a point, because distance is measured from each searcher. Its results vary across its own service area, which is why a single average position tells it almost nothing useful.
- How is local SEO different from ordinary SEO?
- Ordinary SEO competes for a page of links, where distance is irrelevant. Local SEO competes for a map result that Google assembles from a profile it hosts, where distance is half the outcome. The tactics that carry over are fewer than the shared name suggests.
