What does a Google AI Overview citation card show about my business?

Short answer

A citation card is best read as a supporting link attached to Google's AI-generated answer. It shows which page Google surfaced for that particular response. It does not show your local ranking, guarantee future inclusion, prove that Google recommended your business, or promise customers.

What is the difference between the AI answer and the citation card?

The answer text is Google's generated response, while the card is a supporting link to a page Google surfaced for that response.

Google describes an AI Overview as an AI-generated snapshot with key information and links to dig deeper.1 Google Search Central describes the links in AI features as relevant supporting links and a jumping-off point for exploring more information.2 The page attached to the card is therefore a source to inspect, not proof that every sentence in the answer came from that page.

For the documented source classes behind local-business information, see Where does Google AI Overview get local business information?. Google's Search Central documentation calls these links “supporting links”; “citation card” is the term used in the dated Search Engine Roundtable report for the rendered link-and-description unit.23

What does each visible element mean?

What you see What it supports What it does not prove
AI-generated answer text Google generated a response for that query and context. Every sentence is a verbatim statement from one page or is error-free.
A linked citation card Google surfaced that page as a supporting link in that response. A local rank, future inclusion, or a recommendation.
A generated description in or beside the card The displayed text may summarize what Google considers relevant to the query. The wording appears on the source page or describes the whole business accurately.
A business name in the answer The business was named in that observed answer. The business won a local result, will be recommended to every person, or will gain customers.

Does the text in a citation card come from my page word for word?

Not necessarily. A description in or beside a citation card may be generated or summarized for the query, so check the source page before treating it as a quotation.

On October 23, 2026, Barry Schwartz reported in Search Engine Roundtable that Google appeared to be testing or rolling out generated summary snippets in some AI Overview citation cards.3 The report described the behavior for some test queries, not every query, and it was not a Google product specification. It also reported an observation that the displayed text did not appear exactly on the cited page.

The safe reading is narrow: if the card contains generated text, call it a summary or description. Call it a quotation only after comparing the words with the source page. Google also warns that AI responses may include mistakes and advises checking important information in more than one place.1

A supporting link shows that Google surfaced the page in one response, not that Google will serve the page again or that the page has a special AI ranking status.

Google Search Central says a page must be indexed and eligible to appear in Google Search with a snippet to be eligible as a supporting link in an AI Overview or AI Mode. Google says there are no additional technical requirements or special AI optimizations, but it also says that meeting the requirements does not guarantee crawling, indexing, or serving.2

Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode may use different models and techniques, so responses and links can vary. AI Overviews also often do not trigger because Google shows them only when its systems decide they add value beyond classic Search.2 A card is therefore evidence of one rendered answer at one time, not a permanent inclusion statement.

No. A cited page, a business being named, and a business being recommended are different observations.

If a card links to a page about your business, the defensible statement is that Google surfaced that page as a supporting link in the observed answer. If the answer names the business, you can say that Google named it in that answer. Neither observation alone establishes that Google recommended the business, selected it as the best local option, or will show it for another person.

Keep the wording tied to what the rendered answer actually shows.

Is a citation card a local ranking result?

No. Google describes local ranking separately from AI Overview supporting links, so a card alone does not identify your local position.

Google Business Profile Help says local results are mainly based on relevance, distance, and popularity. Google also says there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking.4 That guidance does not discuss citation cards, so the careful conclusion is limited: a card does not itself tell you where the business ranked in local results or establish a change in local ranking.

Do not turn a card into a local-search result claim. Record the AI response and a local result as separate observations with their own query, context, surface, and date.

What should I check when I see a citation card?

Open the linked page, compare the displayed wording with the source, and record the exact query and result before drawing a conclusion.

Use this short check:

  1. Save the exact query, the date, the AI surface, and the visible answer. Record location, device, and account context when they affect the result.
  2. Open every displayed supporting link and compare the card's description with the page. Mark generated wording as a summary unless the page contains the same words.
  3. Check an important business fact in more than one place. Google specifically advises opening AI source links and trying other Search results.1
  4. Separate what happened to the page from what happened to the business name. A page can be linked without the business being named, and a business can be named without the card proving a recommendation.
  5. Store the observation as dated evidence. Do not treat one card as proof of a permanent inclusion, local rank, recommendation, customer, or revenue result.

What does accurate Business Profile information change?

Complete and accurate Business Profile information makes a business more likely to show in local search results, but it does not guarantee a citation, business mention, recommendation, ranking, or customer result.

Google says complete and accurate Business Profile information makes a business more likely to show in local search results.4 Its representation guidelines also say that a business should be represented accurately and consistently with its real-world identity.5 Those are profile and local-search practices, not a formula for producing a citation card.

Common questions

No. Google says an indexed page that is eligible to appear with a Search snippet can be eligible as an AI-feature supporting link. A citation card is the link as it appeared in one generated response, with its own answer context and possible generated description.
