Can I see which of my franchise locations show up in AI map answers?

By Sergey Sulimko, Founder

Partly. Google documents location-level Business Profile performance comparisons, but those reports do not list which franchise locations appeared in AI answers. A location-by-location Ask Maps sample can show what was returned for a prompt at a particular time, but it is observation evidence, not a Google inclusion metric.

Can I compare my franchise locations in Google Business Profile?

Google Business Profile performance shows how people discover a profile and what actions they take on Search and Maps. Google says managers can access performance information for individual or multiple profiles.1

Google also documents a spreadsheet download for managers who select multiple profiles. The selected locations and the selected timeframe stay together, so the export is the native comparison layer for profile activity, not for AI-answer appearances.1

Evidence type What it can show What it cannot establish
Business Profile performance export1 Views, searches, and actions for selected profiles and a selected timeframe That a location appeared in an Ask Maps answer
Business Profile Performance API23 Location-level performance reports with documented time granularity A prompt-by-prompt AI-answer record
Ask Maps observation log4 The answer returned for a prompt, whether a location was named or linked, and the source links shown Universal inclusion, ranking, or a guaranteed result

For profile governance and access across several locations, see the guide to local SEO for multi-location businesses and franchises. For the broader subject, use the AI search hub.

Does Business Profile performance show which locations appeared in AI map answers?

Google describes Business Profile performance data as profile discovery and customer actions, while the location references describe reports by location.123 The reviewed public documentation leaves the question of AI-answer appearance separate.

Do not relabel Views, Searches, Calls, Directions, or other profile metrics as AI-answer inclusion. A high profile metric can tell you about activity on that profile. It does not show that Ask Maps returned the location.

The conclusion is deliberately narrow: the reviewed public Google documentation does not describe an owner-facing report of franchise locations that appeared in AI answers.123 It is not a claim that no third-party product could ever offer a separately documented observation service.

How can I sample AI map answers for each location?

Google documents Ask Maps as an AI-powered question-and-answer surface. On Android phones and tablets, Google says to open Ask Maps under the search bar, enter a question or use the microphone, send it, and continue with follow-up questions. Google also tells people to check important information in more than one place and open the links to AI sources because AI-powered answers can sometimes be incorrect.4

Use the same observation design for every location:

  1. Create a roster with a stable location identifier, profile name, and city. Keep the franchise locations distinct even when they share a brand name.
  2. Choose one observation window, then record the date, time, surface, and device for every row. The Google instructions cited here describe Ask Maps on Android phones and tablets.
  3. Use the same prompt family for each location. Save the exact prompt text instead of summarizing it later.
  4. Record the answer returned, whether the location was named or linked, the AI source links shown, and any qualifiers in the answer.
  5. Ask the same predetermined follow-up questions for every location. Save each follow-up prompt and answer beside the original observation.
  6. Label the result as appeared in this sample or was returned for this prompt. Do not label one observation as guaranteed inclusion or a ranking position.

The observation is comparable only when the prompt, surface, device, time context, and recording rules are kept comparable. The log below is an editorial evidence template, not a Google report.

Field What to record
observed_at Date, time, and timezone
location_id / profile name / city Stable location identifier plus the reader-facing location label
prompt_text The exact question sent to Ask Maps
surface / device For example, Ask Maps on an Android phone
context_note Only context needed to interpret the row; do not expose private account history
answer_returned Whether an answer was returned
location_named_or_linked Whether the location was named or linked, with the exact form if useful
source_links The AI source links shown in the answer
description_and_qualifiers Wording that limits or conditions the answer
follow_up_prompt The predetermined follow-up question, if used
evidence_reference A controlled screenshot or record reference that the team can audit

Can I use the Business Profile Performance API for this comparison?

Yes, for the Business Profile performance layer. Google documents a location resource and a reportInsights method that returns insights on one or more metrics by location.2 The Performance API package documents daily time series for daily metrics and monthly aggregation for search-keyword impressions.3

Retrieve the same metric definitions and date range for each location, then keep the returned rows separate from the Ask Maps observation log. The API documentation does not describe a per-prompt AI-answer inclusion field, so an API export cannot replace the observation table.

For a deeper explanation of comparable profile-performance rows, see comparing Google Business Profile performance by location. For a tool-selection question, see choosing a local rank tracker for AI search. A rank-tracking report is still a different evidence type from an Ask Maps answer observation.

Why can two Ask Maps observations differ?

Google says that Maps AI-powered features can use location data and, in countries where the feature is available and when Personalized Recommendations is enabled, can personalize responses using account activity and interests. The documented inputs include searches and directions, past Ask Maps conversations, saved lists and labels, reviews, ratings, photos, search history, and connected Google content apps.5

Google also warns that AI-powered answers can sometimes be incorrect. A result can therefore be a useful record of what one prompt returned under stated conditions without being a uniform answer for every person or every location.

When a result matters, check the answer's source links and compare important facts in more than one place. Do not turn a personalized or incorrect answer into a claim about the underlying Business Profile.

What can I conclude from a location-by-location sample?

Use the sample to describe observed behavior, not to promise coverage:

Observation Safe wording Wording the observation does not support
A location is named or linked in one response “The location was returned for this prompt at this time.” “Google includes this location in AI answers.”
A location appears in several comparable runs “The location appeared in these sampled runs.” “The location ranks consistently in AI map answers.”
A location is not returned “The location was not returned in this sample.” “The location never appears in AI answers.”
A profile has more views or searches “The profile recorded the reported performance activity.” “The location appears more often in AI answers.”

The table gives you an auditable comparison across locations. It does not create a Google metric, reveal every answer a person might receive, or guarantee that a location will be named, linked, or recommended.

Common questions

Does a high number of profile views mean a location appears in AI map answers?
No. Google Business Profile performance describes profile discovery and actions on Search and Maps. It does not turn a profile-view total into evidence that Ask Maps returned the location.
Can I say that a location ranks in AI map answers?
No. Report what the sample observed, such as “returned for this prompt” or “appeared in these runs.” A sampled answer does not establish a universal position, inclusion rule, or future result.
