Google Business Profile

What should my agency change in our Google Business Profile so it supports both Maps and AI visibility?

Short answer

An agency should correct and document the real-world business name, core category, address or service area, customer-facing hours, phone, website, description, and media. An agency should also keep the official website crawlable and factually aligned with the profile. Google's Business Profile and Search guidance documents this accuracy and Search-eligibility work; it does not promise Maps ranking, AI inclusion, citation, or recommendation.

What should an agency change in the Google Business Profile?

Google's Business Profile source guidance says profile information can come from the owner, crawled official-website content, and user contributions.1 Start with a three-way comparison: the displayed profile, the real business, and the official website.

Field Verify against Change and record
Business name Storefront, website, stationery, and the name customers recognize Match the real-world name. Remove hours, phone numbers, URLs, taglines, service details, or location information that is not part of the real name.2
Category The business's core activity Use the fewest categories that are specific and representative. Remove categories used only as keywords or attributes.2
Address or service area How customers are actually served Choose the storefront, hybrid, or service-area branch that matches the operation. Do not use a virtual office. Hide the address when customers are not served there.2
Hours The customer-facing schedule Check regular, special, seasonal, and service-specific hours. First check whether the business is appointment-only or has a varied schedule that should not use ordinary hours.2
Phone The individual location and the business's control of the number Keep a number that connects to the individual location. Do not use redirects to another number or URL. Google recommends a local number when possible.2
Website The individual location, full URL, and Googlebot access Use the full URL, make sure it represents the location, and check that Googlebot is not blocked.23
Description The actual services, products, mission, and history Keep it honest, relevant, and useful. Remove promotion-led copy, prices, sales language, irrelevant text, and links.2
Customer-facing media What the business actually offers and how it presents itself Check photos and videos against the real offer and record each changed item with its date.2

How should an agency document each change?

Each change should have a dated before-and-after record, its source-of-truth comparison, the date submitted, the date observed live, and a screenshot or export when available. Google says it reviews Business Profile changes before updating them live. Its separate Collected info view can show a source and collection date, but Google says that feature is limited to select regions, languages, and business categories.3

Evidence Include
Field record The field name, previous value, new value, and the real-world reason for the correction
Source check The profile value, the official website URL or page, and the business record or signage used for comparison
Submission record The date the agency submitted the edit and the date the agency checked the displayed result
Proof A dated screenshot or export of the before value, after value, and any visible Google status

The record should still exist when Google's Collected info view is unavailable. This is evidence of what the agency changed and what it observed, not evidence of a ranking or AI-answer outcome. For ownership, access, consent, and reporting checks, use the Google Business Profile agency evidence checklist.

What should an agency change on the official website?

For Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, keep the official website crawlable, put important business facts in text, make structured data match visible text, and keep Business Profile information current.4

Google says a page must be indexed and eligible to appear in Search with a snippet before it can be eligible as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode. Google also says there are no additional AI-specific technical requirements and no need for special AI files, AI text files, or special Schema.org markup. Meeting the requirements does not guarantee crawling, indexing, serving, or inclusion.4

Google's generative-AI guidance says publicly accessible, crawlable content and Google Business Profiles can help products and services be visible in Google's own generative-AI responses. That guidance applies to Google's Search features, not every AI assistant. The Google Business Profile and AI-search relationship explains the documented connection, while the cross-surface AI-search checklist covers testing beyond Google's profile fields.5

Do these changes guarantee Maps ranking or AI visibility?

No. Accurate profile data and ordinary Search eligibility are documented correction work, not a guarantee of a Maps position, AI inclusion, citation, or recommendation.

Google says complete and accurate information makes a Business Profile more likely to show for relevant local searches. Google also says local results are mainly based on relevance, distance, and popularity, and that there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking.6 Google's AI-features guidance separately says that meeting requirements and best practices does not guarantee that Google will crawl, index, or serve a page.4

An agency report should therefore label the fields corrected, the sources compared, and the dated result observed. It should not turn a clean profile or a crawlability check into a promise that Google will rank the business, cite it, or recommend it.

Common questions

Correct the conflicting source and compare the profile again. Google says Business Profile information can combine owner-provided data with crawled official-website content and user contributions, so the agency should not treat a profile edit as the only record Google may show.
