Where does ChatGPT get local business data?

By Sergey Sulimko, Founder

ChatGPT can answer a local business question from general model knowledge, a current web search that sometimes uses search providers, or local information supplied by trusted third-party providers. OpenAI also documents beta business feeds from approved local-services partners. A business owner can verify one answer by recording its context, opening its cited pages, and checking the business’s public records.

Where does ChatGPT get its general knowledge about a local business?

OpenAI says the foundation models that power ChatGPT are developed from three primary source categories: publicly available internet information; information accessed through third-party partnerships; and information that people, human trainers, and researchers provide or generate. Those categories describe model development, not a live lookup of one business.

OpenAI also says trained models do not store or retain copies of their training data. When a model generates an answer, it uses learned weights to predict and create new content. A business detail recalled without a current citation is therefore not a current business record.

When does ChatGPT search the web for a local business?

ChatGPT may search the web automatically when a question would benefit from current information. A response that uses web search may include citations, and the Sources control can show cited sources and other relevant links. OpenAI says ChatGPT Search sometimes partners with other search providers. When it does, ChatGPT Search typically rewrites a question into one or more targeted queries and may send more specific queries after reviewing the first results.

The AI search hub explains the difference between a current search result and a broader AI answer. For a local question, the answer you receive can also depend on the location context available to ChatGPT.

How does location affect a ChatGPT local result?

ChatGPT may use an approximate location based on an IP address to provide local results. Device-location sharing is optional and off by default. Precise device location is not required, but local results may be less specific without it. A VPN or network location can affect the inferred area, and enabled memory can also influence the location used for search.

That means two people can receive different local results for the same wording when their network, location setting, or saved location context differs. Add a city, neighborhood, or postal code when the question needs a specific area, then inspect the Sources shown for the answer.

Which third-party providers supply local information to ChatGPT?

OpenAI says ChatGPT may share location with trusted third-party providers that supply local information such as nearby business listings or weather reports. Location is shared only to make the response more relevant, and OpenAI says it minimizes the information shared for that purpose.

For restaurant availability, OpenAI names OpenTable, Resy, and Yelp. Availability depends on the restaurant and location. OpenTable reservations are available globally, Resy reservations in the United States, and Yelp reservations in the United States and Canada. The feature is limited to eligible consumer plans on web, mobile, and desktop when using GPT-5.6 Sol or GPT-5.6 Luna. Restaurant reservation search is not available in ChatGPT Work or on Business, Enterprise, or Edu plans.

Can an approved partner provide local business records directly?

OpenAI documents a separate beta route for approved local-services partners. A partner can provide a paginated feed of local business records that ChatGPT indexes for search and uses to decide whether a business supports the Get Quote action. Each record includes a business name, address, location, phone number, website, and the partner’s canonical listing URL.

What sources can appear in a Google Business Profile?

Google says Business Profile information is compiled from four source classes. The profile can combine information supplied by the business with facts and content from other sources.

Google’s source class Examples in Google’s documentation
Publicly available information Crawled web content, such as the business’s official website
Licensed third-party data Data licensed from third parties
Users User-contributed addresses, phone numbers, photos, and reviews, including profiles claimed by business owners
Google’s interactions with a local place or business Information based on Google’s own interactions with that place or business

Google gives a restaurant as an example: a customer may see hours and location added by the business alongside a menu link or customer-uploaded meal photos. A claimed and verified Google Business Profile is one public record an owner can keep accurate.

Google separately says Business Profiles can help products and services appear in Google’s AI responses and other Google Search results. That guidance covers Google Search features such as AI Overviews and AI Mode, not ChatGPT Search.

How can a business owner keep a Google Business Profile record accurate?

Google says a business must add or claim its profile and verify it to show on Search, Maps, and other Google services. Google describes editing for a verified profile, including the address, hours, contact information, and photos. Some businesses may need to verify the profile before making changes.

On Google Search, the documented edit path is:

  1. Sign in to the Google Account linked to the Business Profile.
  2. Go to the Business Profile.
  3. Select Edit profile, make the changes, and select Save.

Where the feature is available, Edit profile → Collected info lets an owner review profile details and see the source and collection date. Google says this feature is limited to select regions, languages, and business categories, so it may not be available to every business.

How can I verify one ChatGPT answer about a local business?

Use a single-run log. It tells you what one answer showed on one date, not where every future answer will get its information.

  1. Record the exact prompt, date, location context, and device-location setting when it matters.
  2. Record the answer and every URL shown in Sources, when that control is available.
  3. Open each cited page. Check that the page supports the specific claim, then review its publication or update date and the authority of the source.
  4. For profile details, compare the cited claim with the business’s own records and its claimed, verified Google Business Profile. Check each field separately, including the name, location, phone number, website, and hours.
  5. If a result looks wrong, search again with a specific source, date, or location. OpenAI warns that search results and citations can be incomplete, outdated, or incorrect.

The guide to choosing who gets you onto AI search covers the difference between making a site eligible for crawling and expecting it to be selected in an answer.

Allowing OAI-Searchbot to crawl a website and allowing traffic from OpenAI’s published searchbot IP addresses makes the site eligible for inclusion in ChatGPT Search. OpenAI says ChatGPT ranks results using multiple factors for relevance and reliability, but placement is not guaranteed. Eligibility is a technical condition, not a promise that ChatGPT will cite or recommend the business.

Common questions

Why can ChatGPT show a different local answer for me?
ChatGPT may infer an approximate location from an IP address, while device-location sharing is optional and off by default. A VPN, network location, or enabled memory can affect the inferred location. Add a specific city or neighborhood, then compare the Sources shown for each answer.
Does allowing OAI-Searchbot guarantee that ChatGPT will cite my business?
No. OpenAI says allowing OAI-Searchbot and its published IP traffic makes a website eligible for inclusion, while placement is not guaranteed. Check a particular response’s Sources to see whether ChatGPT cited the site.
