Google Business Profile categories for mobile dog groomers: what changes

By Sergey Sulimko, Founder6 min read

A mobile dog groomer should choose the most specific truthful category Google currently shows for the business, then configure service-area or hybrid settings based on where customers receive grooming. “Mobile” describes the operating model, not a category.

The general Google Business Profile category rules and the Google Business Profile setup still apply. This cut shows what changes when a dog groomer travels to customers or operates both a salon and a mobile unit.

What category and profile setup should a mobile dog groomer use?

Question Profile decision What the rule means for a mobile dog groomer
What is the business? Choose the most specific truthful primary category offered in Google's selector.1 “Mobile” describes how grooming is delivered. It does not create a category, and Google does not allow a custom category.2
Which category should I check first? Check the current list in the Business Profile category editor. Google's US English categories.list record offers Pet groomer (pet_groomer) and contains no Dog groomer or Mobile pet groomer category label. The operating word mobile belongs in service-area or hybrid settings, not in an invented category.3
What does the listing count mean? Treat it as market context, not as the category picker. DataForSEO reports 209,451 as a listing count across all countries.4 This count is separate from Google's US category result and is not a US category-picker result.
Does the business serve customers at its base? Use a service-area setup when it does not. Use a hybrid setup when it does and also travels.5 A service-area business should remove its address from the Business Profile.5 A hybrid business enters both its business address and service area.5
How should the service area be entered? Name cities, postal codes, or other areas actually served.5 Google allows up to 20 areas, not a radius, and says the overall boundary should be no more than about two hours of driving time from the base.5
What other categories are needed? Add only a few categories for special departments or services.1 Google says not to add one category for every product or service. Use a few relevant categories from its provided list.1

For the primary category, open Business Profile → Edit profile → Business category → Edit. Choose the option that best describes what the business is from the list Google shows. Apply Google's category-identity check: choose a category for the whole grooming business, not for one procedure. If the specific option you need is not available, choose the most specific general category the picker offers; do not invent a category.12

Which grooming services should a mobile dog groomer add?

Services belong in Google's services editor, not in a list of extra categories. Open Business Profile → Edit services, choose suggested services tailored to the business type, or use Add custom service when a real service is missing. Depending on what the business actually offers, a mobile dog groomer might list:

  • bathing;
  • a haircut or other coat care, including brushing;
  • nail trimming;
  • ear cleaning; and
  • breed-specific grooming.

Google allows services to be grouped and to include descriptions and prices. The American Kennel Club's grooming guidance also identifies coat care, bathing, nail trimming, ear cleaning, and breed-specific professional grooming as real grooming work.67 Do not turn each procedure into a category: the category describes what the business is, while the service list describes what it does.16

How should a mobile dog groomer set its address and service area?

The mobile operating model changes the location settings, not the category. A groomer who travels to customers and does not serve them at the base is a service-area business. Google says it may have one profile for the whole area it serves and should remove its address from the Business Profile.5 Enter actual cities, postal codes, or other named areas, not a radius. Google allows up to 20 service areas, says the overall boundary should be no more than about two hours of driving time from the base, and says approved edits may take up to 48 hours to appear.5

A groomer with a customer-facing salon and a van is a hybrid business only when customers are served at that address and the business also visits or delivers to them. Google allows the hybrid profile to show the address and service area. Without permanent on-site signage, Google says the business is not eligible as a storefront and should use the service-area model.5 Enter both the address and service area for the hybrid model. If customers are not served at the address, remove the address and enter only the service area.5

What mobile dog-grooming risk should the owner check?

The van's wash-water and leak controls are a trade-specific operating responsibility. A public-works best-management-practices guide for participating Santa Barbara County jurisdictions says never discharge pet-washing wastewater to a street, gutter, or near a storm drain. Collect it and discharge it to a sink, toilet, or another drain connected to the sanitary sewer. The same guide says to repair mobile-unit or equipment leaks promptly and use a drip pan.8

Make the wastewater path, leak check, drip pan, and spill response part of the mobile-unit checklist. The guide is jurisdiction-specific and revised June 2024, so confirm the local ordinance and wastewater provider's requirements before operating in a new area.8

What should a mobile dog groomer check before changing its category?

Changing or adding an existing category can trigger reverification, because Google may need to confirm that the business information is accurate.2 Google's current wording names relevance, distance, and popularity as the main local-result factors.9 A category edit is a factual profile change, not a promise of a ranking position. For a repeatable outside check after a profile change, record the date, query, searcher location, and Visibility Score. Test the service area separately from the category.
