Google Business Profile for plumbers: categories, services, and service area
A plumbing business should choose the most specific truthful category for the plumbing business overall, list only the drainage, septic, water-heater, gas, and related work it actually offers as Services, and set a service area that matches its customers.123
The general ranking steps still apply. This plumbing cut adds dated category labels and counts, the distinction between categories and Services, service-area choices for plumbers, and California Contractors State License Board advertising rules.
Which Google Business Profile categories can a plumbing business consider?
Start with Plumber when it accurately describes the business overall; consider the other labels in the dated snapshot only when they truthfully describe the plumbing business and Google's current picker offers them.41
A primary Google Business Profile category identifies what the business is and anchors the profile's main business identity. Additional categories should describe the plumbing business itself, not every procedure it performs. Google's category guidance says to use as few categories as possible, choose categories that are specific and representative of the main business, and describe what the business is rather than list all services it offers.1
The 2026-09-30 US-English categories.list snapshot contains 4,049 Google category resources. The collection used regionCode=US and languageCode=en and followed nextPageToken until no page remained.4 The table keeps the exact labels returned by Google. DataForSEO listing counts are joined to those category IDs and cover all countries, so they are not US counts, category-suitability scores, or ranking evidence.5
| Picker-style label | All-country listings |
|---|---|
| Plumber | 359,407 |
| Drainage service | 39,317 |
| Septic system service | 29,506 |
| Gasfitter | 24,899 |
| Gas installation service | 22,783 |
| Gas engineer | 17,632 |
| Hot water system supplier | 15,780 |
| Solar hot water system supplier | 13,802 |
The snapshot contains no category label for a water heater. Among the relevant water-heating labels, it returns Hot water system supplier and Solar hot water system supplier, so confirm the current label and availability in Google's picker before saving a change.4
If the specific category a plumbing business needs is not available, Google says to choose a more general category. A business cannot create a custom category.16
Which plumbing work should go in Services rather than categories?
Use Services for drain cleaning, pipe work, septic, water-heater, gas, and related plumbing work the plumbing business actually performs; a procedure is not automatically a profile category.12
Google's services editor offers suggested services tailored to the business type. It also allows a custom service when the needed option is not listed. Group different service types, then add a description or price as service details. Keep the service list tied to the work the business actually performs.2
| Plumbing work to review | Where it belongs | What to confirm |
|---|---|---|
| Drain cleaning and sewer work | Services entries for the procedures offered | Add only the drainage work the business performs. Do not add Drainage service as a category solely because a procedure is offered.12 |
| Pipe work | Services entries for the offered pipe work | Put pipe work in Services when the business performs it. Keep the category choice tied to what the business is.12 |
| Septic work | Services entries for the offered septic work | Use Septic system service only if it describes the business itself and the current picker offers it.1 |
| Water-heater work | Services entries for installation, repair, or other offered work | The dated snapshot has no separate water-heater category row.4 Do not invent a water-heater category label.1 |
| Gas work | Services entries for the offered gas work | Confirm that the business's license classification supports the advertised gas work.7 Add a gas-related category only if it describes the business itself and the current picker offers it.1 |
| General plumbing work | Services entries for the offered procedures | Keep the primary category aligned with the plumbing business overall.1 |
To edit the service list, use Google's documented path:
- Go to the Business Profile.
- Select Edit services.
- Select the services that match the work offered.
- Select Save.
Use Add more services for additional suggested options. Use Add custom service when the needed service is not listed. Keep custom service names factual. Google says custom services that violate policy are automatically rejected, and custom service names must not contain profanity, gibberish, personal information, prices, or phone numbers.2
How should a plumbing business set its service area?
If the plumber visits customers and does not serve them at the business address, use one profile for the whole service area and enter named cities, postal codes, or other areas; if customers are served at the address too, use a hybrid setup with both.3
Google names plumbers as an example of a service-area business. When customers are not served at the business address, remove the address and enter only the service area. Google allows up to 20 service areas, which must be cities, postal codes, or other areas rather than a radius. The overall boundary should not be more than about 2 hours of driving time from the business base, and the area should be specific and accurate.3
When customers are served at the address and the plumbing business also travels to customers, Google calls the setup hybrid. A hybrid business can show its address and service area. Google says an approved service-area change can take up to 48 hours to show. Use the service-area guidance for Google Business Profiles when checking the business model and saved areas.3
What California advertising rules should a plumbing business check?
A California licensed plumbing contractor must put its license number in all advertising, and a C-36 Plumbing contractor must display the business name, address, and license number on each side of every commercially registered vehicle in letters at least 1 1/2 inches high.7
The California Contractors State License Board treats a website or internet post that solicits business as advertising. Its guide applies the license-number rule to construction contracts, subcontracts, calls for bid, and all forms of advertising. It states a civil penalty of $100 to $1,000 for a first offense.7
For a C-36 Plumbing contractor, check each commercially registered vehicle for the business name, address, and license number on both sides. The letters must be at least 1 1/2 inches high. The rule is specific to C-36 Plumbing, C-45 Sign, and C-57 Well Drilling contractors.7
California CSLB also says a contractor must not advertise construction work outside the areas for which it is licensed or state in advertising or a public presentation that it is bonded.7 False, misleading, or deceptive advertising used to induce clients to enter improvement contracts is a misdemeanor if they might be misled or injured. The guide also says an ad for home or other improvements may not include false, deceptive, or misleading claims.7
