Category dilution
Category dilution is a local SEO trade term for the claim that adding secondary Google Business Profile categories can weaken the primary category's ranking or relevance.
The phrase belongs to the local SEO trade, not to Google. Indispensable Marketing used it on January 5, 2024, for the concern that adding related categories might hurt ranking.1 A September 19, 2025 Local Search Forum thread used it for the same proposed risk and described an experiment to test it.2 Neither Google help page cited below uses the phrase as an official product term.
Google's actual guidance is narrower. Choose the fewest categories needed to describe the overall core business. Make the primary category as specific as possible while keeping it representative. Use the test “This business IS a,” not “This business HAS a.” Google's category help says the chosen categories can affect local ranking, but neither category page publishes a penalty for additional categories, a dilution score, or a universal category count.34
BrightLocal's June 20, 2023 study of 1,050 business locations found that locations with more additional categories ranked better on average in its sample. Profiles with four additional categories had an average map rank of 5.9, compared with 7.6 for profiles with none.5 That observational result is evidence against the simple claim that more secondary categories always weaken the primary category. It is not a universal rule for every business.
Use a category for what the business or a genuine department is. Put what the business has, offers, sells, or provides in the matching profile field when that field is available:
| Example | IS or HAS? | Keep or move |
|---|---|---|
| Grocery store | IS | Keep as the primary category |
| Bakery or deli owned and operated by the grocery store | IS | Keep as an additional category |
| Independent, public-facing bakery or deli with a separate operator | IS | Give it its own Business Profile |
| Install faucet or repair toilet | HAS, offers | Move to Services if the field is available |
| A packaged item sold in a local store | HAS, sells | Move to Products if the store is eligible |
| Wi-Fi or outdoor seating | HAS, amenity | Move to Attributes if the attribute is available |
Google's grocery-store example supports the first two rows, while its separate-department rule supports the third.4 Google documents the eligibility and availability limits for Services, Products, and attributes.678
