Primary category

By Sergey Sulimko, Founder2 min read

“Primary category” is Google's field name for the first category field on a Google Business Profile: the category from Google's list that most precisely represents the business's main activity.12

Google says the category in the first field is primary when several are selected, and as many as 9 more categories can follow.1 The Google Business Profile is the listing where those choices describe the business to customers.2

Categories tell customers what a business does and help connect a profile with searches for its products or services.2 Google says selected categories affect local ranking. Its example says a business with “Pizza restaurant” as its primary category might appear in local searches for “Restaurants,” “Italian Restaurants,” or “Pizza.”2 A business might also see special profile features based on its category; availability depends on the category.2

The related additional category term covers the secondary field, while category dilution names a separate trade debate.

To choose a primary category, use Google's test “This business IS a”, not “This business HAS a”: the category should describe the business as a whole, not every product, service or amenity.3 If the specific category you need is unavailable, choose a general category from Google's list; you cannot create a custom category.2 For the full procedure, see how to choose Google Business Profile categories.

For an illustration, imagine a shop whose main business is bicycle repair but that also sells helmets. Its primary category should describe what the shop is: bicycle repair, not the helmet product it has. This illustrates Google's IS-a test; it is not a Google example or evidence of a particular ranking outcome.
