How do I correct a wrong business name, address, or phone number after I find a mismatch?

To correct a wrong phone number on Google Maps, first choose the path that matches your access. If you manage the Business Profile, sign in to the linked Google Account, select Edit profile, change the phone field, and select Save.1 If you do not manage it, use Suggest an edit, choose the phone field, review the primary number, and submit the public correction in Google Search or Google Maps.234 Before either path, record the old public number, the authoritative replacement, and the source URL. After review, check the phone separately in Google Search and Google Maps. A Maps Accepted status is not a substitute for that public readback.5 Correcting information makes the public record accurate; it does not promise a ranking change.

What should I confirm before changing a mismatched business name, address, or phone?

Create one approved value for each field before you edit anything. A NAP audit compares a business's name, address, and phone across public sources. The local citation guide explains why the Google Business Profile is only one of those sources.

Field Evidence to confirm Google rule to carry into the correction
Business name Current real-world signage, stationery, and other branding Enter the name as it is consistently represented and recognized in the real world. A name change after verification may trigger re-verification.1 Do not add information that is not part of the real-world name; Google says unnecessary information can result in suspension.6
Address The complete official address, including building, suite, or floor details Enter only information that belongs to the official address. If Google cannot find it, correct the highlighted parts and use Adjust to place the pin when needed.7
Service-area setting Whether customers actually visit the address or the business travels to customers Hide the public address only for a service-area business that does not serve customers at its base. Show a service area instead.7
Primary phone The single phone number the business controls and can verify Use an authoritative phone number for the business. Google says the phone and website should be single, authoritative, and verifiable by the owner.8

Do not make the Google profile the only source of truth. Keep the approved values with the evidence that supports them, such as current signage, the official website, or business-controlled records. The evidence must support the same field you are correcting.

For a phone correction, record the current public number, the intended primary number, the authoritative source URL, and the date you checked them before submitting. Add the submission date and Google's exact review status afterward. This is a correction log for your work, not a field Google requires in the editor.

Is the wrong address a typo or a genuine relocation?

Choose the correction path from what happened in the real world, not from how the mismatch looks in a spreadsheet.

Situation Google path What to record
The business still operates at the same location and an address detail is wrong Google's address help lists the editor path: select Edit profile → Location → Business location → Edit, enter the complete address, and save.7 Google's policy overview also says that if the business has not moved and the address is incorrect, you must contact Google.9 The old address, the complete authoritative address, the evidence checked, and the support or edit reference
The business moved to a new location Do not treat the move as a typo. Google says to mark the existing profile permanently closed and create a new Business Profile at the new location.9 The former location, the relocation date, the new location, and the new-profile status
A different business now occupies the location, or the business changed significantly Do not rename the old profile to represent the new business. Google says the previous business should be marked permanently closed.9 The identity change, the closure action, and the evidence showing which business operates there
The business is a dining, lodging, or entertainment venue and relocated Follow Google's relocation rule. Google says location edits will be rejected for these venues when the physical identity is tied directly to the customer experience.9 The venue type, old profile status, new profile status, and any rejection message

This separation matters because a normal field correction and a relocation have different profile consequences. Google says there should be only one profile per business and no more than one page for each location, with exceptions for individual practitioners and departments. Do not create a duplicate profile just because an existing profile is difficult to edit or access.6

How do I correct a Google Business Profile that I manage?

Use the Google Account linked to the Business Profile. Google says a verified profile can be edited, some businesses must verify before making changes, and only business owners or authorized representatives may verify and manage business information.18

  1. Open the Business Profile in Google Search. In the Google Maps app, open Business.
  2. Select Edit profile.
  3. Change the incorrect field.
  4. Select Save. In the Maps app, the path is Business > Edit profile > Save.1

For an address correction, use the specific path:

  1. Select Edit profile, then Location.
  2. Next to Business location, select Edit.
  3. Enter the complete address and select Save.
  4. If Google highlights part of the address in red, re-enter that part. If Google still cannot find the address, select Adjust and place the map pin.7

For a verified business name change, check the verification state after saving. Google says a verified name change might require re-verification.1 For a phone correction, edit the primary number that the business controls and can verify. Google also allows up to two additional phone numbers, but adding one is not the same as correcting a wrong primary number.82

If the phone is the only wrong field, use this shorter path:

  1. Open the Business Profile in Google Search, or open the Google Maps app and select Business.
  2. Select Edit profile and edit the phone field.
  3. Check the number against the authoritative source you recorded.
  4. Select Save.1

What should I do if I do not control the Business Profile?

Google's guidelines say there should be only one profile per business and no more than one page for each location, with exceptions for individual practitioners and departments. Do not create a second profile to solve an access problem.6

For a wrong phone on a profile you only view, use a public correction instead of Edit profile:

  1. In Google Search on a computer, open the place, select Suggest an edit under the summary or through More, choose Phone number, enter the corrected primary number, review it, and submit it.3
  2. In the Google Maps app on Android, open the place, select Suggest an edit, choose the phone correction, review the value, and submit it.4

Google says the Search feature is unavailable in some regions.3 For the Maps path, Google processes submitted edits and can mark them Pending, Accepted, or Not accepted; an accepted Maps edit may still not show on the map yet.45 Keep the old value and the submitted value in the correction log.

Profile state Supported next step
No profile exists Go to business.google.com/add, select Add your business to Google, follow the instructions, and choose a verification option.10
An unverified profile exists Find the business in Google Maps, select Claim this business, select Manage now, and choose a verification option.10
Someone else verified the profile Request ownership of the existing profile.10

Until the business has the appropriate access, preserve the mismatch in the correction log. A third party that manages a profile must preserve the customer's ownership or co-ownership and inform the customer about profile changes.11

How do I know whether Google accepted my correction?

Record the exact status after you save the edit. Google documents three statuses for Business Profile edits.12

Status What it means Next action
Accepted12 Google accepted the edit, and the updated information displays on the profile. Open the public profile and record the value customers can see.
Not approved12 Google might not approve the edit when it cannot confirm the accuracy. An appeal may be available. Keep the evidence, record the rejection, and use the available appeal or support path.
Pending12 The edit remains under review. Record the submission time and check again within the review window.

Google says edits usually take up to 10 minutes to review, but some reviews can take up to 30 days.12 Treat those figures as the documented review window when you plan your next check, not as a guaranteed completion time.

The public Maps edit list uses a related but different label. Not accepted means Google could not verify the public suggestion. Keep it separate from Business Profile's Not approved status. Google also warns that a recently approved Maps edit may not show on the map yet, so an Accepted status still needs a public readback.5

What should I check after Google reviews the edit?

Verify the value that customers see, not only the status in the editor.

  1. Open the public Business Profile in Google Search and Google Maps.13
  2. Record the displayed business name, address or service-area representation, and phone. For a phone correction, keep separate rows for Google Search and Google Maps, with the displayed number and read date for each surface.
  3. Check for a notification at the top of the profile and for fields shown in blue. Google says blue text indicates information changed by Google; black or white text indicates no Google update for that field.14
  4. If Google shows a suggested edit for review, record the notification and its deadline separately from your own edit. Google gives four days to accept or reject some review-required suggestions, and it may publish a supported suggestion after that window or apply some policy-driven edits without prior review.14
  5. Compare the public values with the authoritative record. If the value is still wrong, preserve the result and choose the next supported correction or appeal path rather than creating a duplicate profile.6

Google can update Business Profile information from user reports, licensed content, and other sources.14 Record the notification and do not assume your own edit was the only cause of a change.

If an accepted phone correction still shows the old number on one surface, record that surface and value instead of treating the status as proof that both surfaces have refreshed. Continue from the evidence in the log and use the supported correction or appeal path when one is available.

Which external listings should I correct after the Google profile?

Correct the Google Business Profile first, then check the official website and the public listings that customers use. BrightLocal's listings-management overview covers Google, Apple Maps, Bing, and Facebook among the platforms involved in business listings.15 This is vendor workflow advice, not a Google rule. Updating those listings does not promise a ranking change.

For each external listing, use the platform's own correction process and keep the same approved business values. Do not assume that every listing has Google's edit labels, review window, or appeal process. The local citation guide describes the wider set of surfaces to compare.

Record What to compare What to log
Official website Business name, address or service-area representation, and phone on the contact page, footer, and location pages URL, observed value, correction date, and current displayed value
Google Maps, Apple Maps, Bing, and Facebook The public listing customers reach and its visible name, address, and phone Listing URL, correction path, submission date, and status if the platform provides one
Other directories and review platforms Important listings found during the audit, especially records that still show the old value Platform owner, URL, old value, action taken, and next check

Correct only records the business owns or is eligible to edit. Keep the Business Profile editing guide nearby for the Google-specific path, and keep the external-listing work separate from Google's documented rules.

What should I put in a Business Profile correction log?

Use one row for each field and public surface. For one business name, keep separate rows for Google Search, Google Maps, and the official website. Google displays Business Profiles on Google Search and Google Maps, and it compiles profile information from multiple sources, including publicly available information from an official business website.13 A separate row preserves what each surface displayed and gives the next correction a specific observation to revisit.

Field Surface Exact displayed text or value URL or screenshot reference Observed date and time Source of truth and evidence Correction owner Recheck date Record class
[business name / address / service area / phone / hours / website] Google Search / Google Maps / official website [copy exactly; write “not visible” when the field is absent] [profile or page URL; screenshot filename when needed] [YYYY-MM-DD HH:MM timezone] [approved value; evidence and date checked] [person or role] [YYYY-MM-DD or not scheduled] difference / match / not visible / presentation variant

Keep these observation classes separate:

  • difference: the same field shows different values on two or more surfaces. Preserve every value and its evidence.
  • match: the underlying value agrees across the surfaces checked.
  • not visible: the field cannot be seen on that surface at the time of the check. Record the observation without assigning a reason.
  • presentation variant: the underlying value agrees but the surface presents it differently, such as a changed label or order.

For the Google edit itself, retain the submission and review fields alongside the cross-surface record:

Log field What to record
Field Business name, address, service area, or phone
Old value The value you found and where you saw it
Authoritative value The approved value and the evidence supporting it
Source URL The profile, website, or listing URL checked
Submitted Date and time of the correction
Status Accepted, Not approved, Pending, or the external platform's exact status
Verified Date and time you checked the public value after the status changed
Current display The value customers can see now, even when it differs from the submitted value
Next action Support, appeal, another platform correction, or the next review date
Show all 9 rowsShow fewer rows

Copy the displayed value exactly. Do not normalize spelling, shorten a URL, or replace an empty field with the value you expect. If a surface has no stable deep link, keep the screenshot filename with the observation time and time zone. Use the source-of-truth column for the approved value and the evidence that supports it. For a business name, compare the real-world representation; for an address or service area, check the actual location and service model.6 Do not make the website the source of truth by default.

Keep ranking or visibility claims out of this log. The record documents public facts, follow-up ownership, and recheck dates. It does not establish a ranking position, a ranking cause, or a result from correcting the field.

This log separates an edit that was saved from a value that is actually public. It also makes the next audit a comparison against a dated record instead of a new guess. If a public profile is inaccurate, Google points owners to suggest an edit or flag the profile for removal.13 Preserve the public value before and after that correction path rather than replacing the observation with the intended value.

Common questions

No ranking change is guaranteed. Correct the business information because customers and Google need an accurate public record, then measure visibility separately if that question matters.
