Troubleshooting
How do I fix a duplicate Google Business Profile blocking my claim?
Start by finding the existing profile in Google Maps with the business name and city. Then check whether it is unverified, verified and owned by someone else, or truly a duplicate. Claim an unverified profile. For a verified storefront or hybrid profile another person controls, request access. For a service-area profile without a physical shop or office, contact support. Remove a duplicate you created by mistake, or request a merge when two profiles represent the same business. Do not create another profile while you diagnose the problem.123
How can I tell which duplicate-profile problem I have?
Search Google Maps for the exact business name and city. Compare the result with the business you represent, including its address, service setup, and profile details. Use the first matching signal below.
| What you see | What it means | Safe next action |
|---|---|---|
| A profile Google considers a duplicate does not show on Search or Maps | Duplicate-status problem | Confirm which profile is correct, then remove the mistaken duplicate or request a merge. |
| Claim this business and Manage now appear on an existing profile | Unverified profile | Claim that existing profile and complete the verification option Google offers. |
| Someone else may manage this Business Profile appears for a verified profile | Ownership conflict | Use Request Access for a storefront or hybrid profile. For a service-area profile without a physical shop or office, contact support. |
| Claim this business or Own this business is missing | You might already own the profile | Check the Google Account that may already own it before submitting another request. |
| A newly added owner or manager may get an error when deleting or undeleting the profile, removing another owner or manager, or changing primary ownership | New-role limitation | Check whether the role was added recently before treating the error as a separate ownership problem. |
Google lists three duplicate conditions: an existing verified profile for the same business, multiple profiles at the same address, or multiple profiles for the same business offering different services. Google does not rank these conditions by likelihood. Compare the visible profile state before choosing a branch.1
What should I do when an unverified profile already exists?
Claim the existing profile instead of creating another one. Google’s path is:
- Open Google Maps.
- Search for the business name and city.
- Select the matching business.
- Choose Claim this business, then Manage now.
- Select the verification option Google offers and follow the on-screen instructions.
After successfully claiming the profile, Google says the claimant can control how its business information appears on Google.2
The Google Business Profile verification guide covers the verification step after the existing profile is found.
How do I request access to a verified profile someone else owns?
Use the ownership path when a storefront or hybrid profile is already verified and another person controls it. Google directs an authorized manager to:
- Go to
business.google.com/add. - Enter the business name and address.
- Select the matching profile after Someone else may manage this Business Profile appears.
- Choose Request Access.
- Complete and submit the form.
For a service-area business that serves customers at their locations and has no physical shop or office, contact Google Business Profile support instead. Enter Transfer ownership of listing in the help field, then select Transfer ownership of listing as the issue description.3
Google emails the current profile owner after the request. That owner has 3 days to respond. Approval lets the requester manage the profile. A denial permits an appeal attempt. If the owner does not respond, Google may show Claim or Verify, but that option is not always available.3
If Claim this business or Own this business is absent while you search for the profile, Google says you might already be the owner. Check the Google Account that may own it before starting another ownership request.3
What should I do when Google marks the profile as a true duplicate?
First identify the verified profile that should remain. Google says a business should have only one Business Profile, and a profile it considers a duplicate will not show on Google Search or Maps.1
Was the duplicate created by mistake in your own account?
Google scopes removal to a duplicate profile of a business you already verified, created by mistake. After you confirm which profile is verified, remove that mistaken duplicate from your own account. Google says removal does not affect the verified listing, but it removes all content and linked managers from the duplicate.1
A duplicate profile someone else owns is not this removal case. Request access to a storefront or hybrid profile, or contact support for a service-area profile without a physical shop or office. Request a merge only when 2 or more profiles represent the same business.13
Do two profiles represent the same business?
Request a merge when 2 or more profiles represent the same business. Google says the profiles must represent the same business and should have the same information.1
Use this Google Maps path:
- Open Google Maps and select the duplicate place.
- Choose Suggest an edit.
- Choose Place closed or not here.
- Choose Duplicate of another place.
- Choose Submit.
Google reviews merge requests. If Google merges the profiles, it combines the reviews. Review replies may be lost, so copy important replies before submitting. For the merge-only question, see how to merge duplicate Google Business Profiles.14
What if two distinct businesses were marked as duplicates?
Contact Google Business Profile support to appeal when the profiles represent 2 distinct and eligible businesses. Both businesses must be eligible and distinct. If both businesses serve customers at the same location, provide evidence of permanent signage that clearly shows both businesses.1
This appeal path is for two different businesses. It does not apply to a true duplicate that represents the same business. Use the merge path for the same business.
What if access was granted but ownership controls still fail?
Google says only owners can add or remove Business Profile users. Managers can remove themselves. Only the primary owner can transfer primary ownership.5
A new owner or manager must wait 7 days before managing all profile features. During that period, attempts to delete or undelete a profile, remove users, or make someone the primary owner may return an error. The 7-day limit does not mean every feature is unavailable.5
If an authorized representative is handling the profile, the business owner must give express consent. Google says the representative must work directly with the owner to complete verification. Have the owner initiate or participate in the claim and verification path.6
What should I record if none of these checks explains the block?
Record the exact business name and city searched, the Google Account used, every profile URL, each profile’s visible status and verification state, and which profile holds reviews or replies. Add whether the business is a storefront, hybrid, or service-area business and which action you already tried.
If the profile still appears blocked, use Google Business Profile support with that record.
