How to optimize your GBP listing
Whether you do it yourself or let Maps Agent handle it, here are the key areas of Google Business Profile optimization that drive results.
1. Complete every field
Google rewards complete profiles. Fill out:
- Business name (exact legal name, no keyword stuffing)
- Address and service area
- Phone number (local number preferred over toll-free)
- Website URL
- Hours of operation (including holiday hours)
- Business description (750 characters, use relevant keywords naturally)
- Primary and secondary categories
2. Choose the right categories
Your primary category is the single most important ranking factor you control. Choose the category that most precisely describes your core service.
Add secondary categories for other services you offer. Most businesses should have 3–5 categories total.
3. Post regularly
Google Posts keep your profile active and signal to Google that your business is engaged. Best practices:
- Post at least once per week (Maps Agent publishes 4/month)
- Include a call-to-action in every post
- Use relevant keywords naturally
- Add photos to posts when possible
4. Manage reviews
Reviews are the strongest prominence signal:
- Respond to every review (positive and negative)
- Respond within 24–48 hours
- Be professional and specific in responses
- Never offer incentives for reviews (violates Google guidelines)
5. Optimize your description
Your business description should:
- Lead with your primary service and location
- Include 2–3 relevant keywords naturally
- Describe what makes your business unique
- Stay within 750 characters
- Avoid keyword stuffing or marketing hype
6. Add photos
Profiles with photos get 42% more requests for directions and 35% more clicks to websites. Add:
- Exterior and interior photos
- Team photos
- Photos of your work or products
- Your logo and cover photo
