Can I create a Google Business Profile without a phone number?
Yes, potentially. Google’s public guidance allows a phone number or a website representing the individual business location, but Google chooses the verification method. A profile can be verified without a phone only when Google offers a non-phone method. If Google offers phone or SMS only, you need access to it.
Does Google require a phone number to create a Business Profile?
No, Google’s public contact guidance does not make a phone number the only route.
Google says an eligible business can create a Business Profile when it has a customer-visitable location or travels to customers. Its contact rule says to provide a phone number that connects to the individual location, or a website that represents that location.1 The broader Google Business Profile setup answer covers the creation sequence and the location choice.
| What “without a phone” means | What Google’s guidance says | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Public contact field | A phone number or a website can represent the individual business location.1 | Use the website route if it accurately represents that location. |
| Profile verification | Google chooses the available method. A non-phone method can work, but phone or SMS verification requires phone access.2 | Use the method shown for the profile. |
| Calls performance metric | Google says to add a phone number to track the Calls metric after verification.3 | Treat this as a reporting requirement, not a profile-creation requirement. |
Can I verify a Business Profile without a phone number?
Only when Google offers a non-phone verification method for that specific profile.
Google automatically determines the available verification methods from factors such as the business type, public information, region, or business hours. You cannot change the method manually, and Google may require more than one method. If Google offers phone or SMS, you must answer the business phone or receive the text. Interactive Voice Response systems do not receive the code.2 The Google Business Profile verification answer explains the requirements for the other methods.
Is a phone number required for Google Business Profile performance data?
A phone number is specifically required for the Calls metric, not stated as a requirement to create the profile.
Google says performance data is available only for verified Business Profiles and that only metrics applicable to a business appear. Its Calls metric counts clicks on the profile’s call button, and Google says to add a phone number to track it.3 That reporting rule is separate from the contact field and verification method.
Is hiding a phone number the same as creating a profile without one?
No. Hiding a phone number is a separate setting on an existing Business Profile.
Google documents the phone number as an editable profile field and says a profile can hide it.4 Google’s verification guidance separately says that available verification methods are automatic and cannot be changed.2 For the setting itself, see how to hide your Google Business Profile phone number.
If Google offers a non-phone verification method, use that option.2 If Google offers only phone or SMS, arrange access to the business phone before trying to verify the profile.2
