Can I hide the phone number on my Google Business Profile?

By Sergey Sulimko, Founder

Yes. Google says you can hide the phone number on a Google Business Profile. In the profile, select More → Business Profile settings → Advanced settings. Under “Phone number,” turn on “Don’t show.” Google says you can edit a verified Business Profile, and some businesses might need to verify first before making changes.

How do I hide the phone number on my Google Business Profile?

Google's Edit your Business Profile guidance documents this path:

  1. Open your Business Profile.
  2. Select More → Business Profile settings.
  3. Select Advanced settings.
  4. Under “Phone number,” turn on “Don’t show.”
Question Google's current guidance
How many phone numbers can a profile hold? One primary business number plus up to 2 additional numbers, for 3 phone-number entries in total.
What number types can I add? Mobile or landline numbers.
Can I add a fax number? No. Google excludes fax numbers.
How do I hide the displayed number? Select More → Business Profile settings → Advanced settings, then turn on “Don't show” under “Phone number.”

Google's phone-number guidance sets the entry limit and allowed number types, while its editing guidance documents “Don't show” as the visibility control. The Google Business Profile hub covers the profile beyond this phone setting.

What should I check after hiding the number?

Reopen the same More → Business Profile settings → Advanced settings path and check the “Don’t show” setting. Then view the profile in Google Search and Google Maps as a customer would, and check whether the phone action still matches the contact route the business intends to offer. The setting confirms the profile's declared phone visibility; the public check confirms what customers actually encounter.

Can customers still contact me if I hide the phone number?

Customers may still contact you through other information on the profile, but Google recommends adding the phone number when it is hidden so customers can contact you. Google's July 31, 2024 notice about Business Profile chat and call history does not say that calls continue through a hidden phone number.

The notice's statements that customers can find and contact a business through Google Search and Maps and that the business continues to receive calls describe the removal of chat and call history. They are not a promise about a hidden phone number. If calls matter to the business, test the public profile and keep another clear contact route, such as the website link, available. For the separate Calls metric and its limits, see how to track calls from a Google Business Profile.

Is hiding a Business Profile number the same as hiding a Local Services Ads number?

No. Google documents these as separate controls.

Surface What Google documents What to change
Google Business Profile A “Don’t show” setting can hide the phone number on the profile. Use the Business Profile settings path above.
Local Services Ads A Google Verified Local Services ad displays a tracking number, and calls to it are forwarded to the business phone number. Use the separate Local Services Ads business-phone process. Google says a phone-number change requires support because additional verification is required, and the business number must not be a tracking number. Google says these support-required edits do not apply if you advertise through a partner affiliate.

The Business Profile setting does not describe what a Local Services ad displays. Google's Local Services Ads overview and ad-editing guidance cover that separate phone setup. The related Local Services Ad was reported to hide its phone number until interaction story covers the different ad-display question.

Does hiding the phone number improve Google Maps ranking?

Google's phone-number guidance says adding a number can improve a business's visibility on Google and build trust. Google's local-ranking guidance says local results are mainly based on relevance, distance, and popularity. Those pages do not establish that adding, hiding, or changing a phone number changes local ranking. Use “Don’t show” as a contact-preference decision, not as a ranking tactic.

Common questions

Can I check whether Google is hiding my Business Profile phone number?
Yes. Open the Business Profile, select More → Business Profile settings → Advanced settings, and inspect the “Phone number” setting. Then check the public profile in Search and Maps. Google documents the setting and the path, while the public check shows what a customer can see.
Is the Local Services Ads tracking number controlled by Business Profile settings?
No. Google describes the Local Services Ads tracking number and the Business Profile phone-number setting on separate help pages. For a standard Local Services Ads account, Google lists a business-phone change as a support-required edit because additional verification is required, and says the business phone must not be a tracking number. Google says that support-required edit list does not apply if you advertise through a partner affiliate.
