Why did my Google review disappear, or never show up?

By Sergey Sulimko, Founder

A Google review can be in one of two situations: it was visible on a Business Profile and then vanished, or a customer says they left it but it never appeared. First check whether the reviewer can find it under Your contributions, then check the profile's review availability, Google's policy review, and any report status in the Reviews Management Tool.

Why did a Google review disappear or never show up?

Google's missing or delayed reviews guidance lists causes that affect the review, the Business Profile, or the reviewer's device. A Google review can also be confused with a review from another service that Google displays on a profile. The Google reviews hub explains the wider review surface.

What happened? What Google's guidance says What to check next
A new review is not visible yet Google checks reviews for policy compliance, and that check can take a few days. Wait a few days, then check the Business Profile again.
The Business Profiles were recently merged Reviews from both profiles can take a few days to display on Google Search and Maps. Check Search and Maps again after the merge has settled.
The reviewer used an older phone or an out-of-date Maps app Older phones or software can cause trouble when a customer tries to leave a review. Update the Google Maps app and try again.
A review was removed for a policy violation Google says a review removed for a policy violation will not be restored. Read the review against Google's content policy instead of treating the disappearance as a normal delay.
A review disappeared after the Business Profile was reinstated Google says reviews can sometimes be removed after reinstatement. Contact Google support for assistance.
Reviews are unavailable for a location or category Reviews are available only in certain countries or regions and for certain business categories. Google says availability can change over time. Check the profile's country, region, and current business category.
The profile shows a review from another site A Business Profile may show reviews from trusted non-Google sources, such as travel or local review sites. Identify the source before treating the item as a missing Google review.
New customer-created content is disabled Google may temporarily disable customer-created content, including reviews, for some Business Profiles or categories. Check whether the profile or category has a temporary posting restriction.
The place is a general-education school for students aged 6 to 18 Google says affected schools can have existing reviews and ratings removed and new reviews disabled. Universities, day-care centers, and swim schools are excluded from that specific change. Confirm the profile's category and whether the school fits Google's stated group.

How can a reviewer check whether Google posted the review?

Google Maps Help says to open Google Maps, choose Menu, then Your contributions, then Reviews. The reviewer should use the Google Account that submitted the review. Google also says reviews are public, so compare the reviewer's entry with the business listing while signed out or from another account.

For the difference between a review that is still being checked and one that was removed, see how Google reviews work. That guide explains why Google checks a review before it appears.

What should I check before I report a missing Google review?

Use this order to separate a delay from a removal or a posting problem:

  1. Identify the case. If the review was visible before, check for a policy or profile change. If a customer says they left it, ask the reviewer to check Your contributions > Reviews in the submitting account.
  2. Check the timing. A new review or reviews moved during a profile merge can take a few days to appear while Google checks them.
  3. Check the reviewer's app. An older phone or out-of-date Google Maps app can cause trouble when a customer tries to post a review.
  4. Check availability. A country, region, category, or temporary profile restriction can change whether customers can leave reviews.
  5. Check the report status. If the business already reported the review, check its status in the Reviews Management Tool.
  6. Choose the right next step. Contact support for a legitimate review removed by mistake or after profile reinstatement. Report a review only when its content or conduct matches a Google policy.

What does each Google review report status mean?

Google's Report inappropriate reviews on your Business Profile guidance says evaluation typically takes several days and lists three statuses in the Reviews Management Tool:

Status What it means What to do
Decision pending The review is flagged, but Google has not evaluated it yet. Check the Reviews Management Tool again after the evaluation period.
Report reviewed - no policy violation Google evaluated the report and found no policy violation. Use the appeal option if the tool marks the review eligible and it still matches a policy category.
Escalated - check your email for updates The appeal was escalated, and Google will send the final decision by email. Check the email tied to the Business Profile and the Reviews Management Tool.

The one-time appeal, its menu steps, the limit of up to 10 eligible reviews in one submission, and the post-appeal statuses are covered in how to report and remove a Google review.

When is a disappeared Google review eligible for removal?

Google says any review can be reported, but only a review that violates a Google policy is eligible for removal. A business disagreeing with a review or disliking its rating is not enough. Google says it does not resolve ordinary conflicts between businesses and customers, and that negative reviews can identify areas for improvement without proving that service was poor.

What the review shows Google's policy boundary
Content not based on a genuine experience or posted from multiple accounts by one person or at one person's request Google classifies this as fake engagement, which is not allowed and will be removed.
A review or rating paid for directly or in kind Google includes paid reviews and ratings in fake engagement.
An incentivized or biased review Google classifies this as rating manipulation and says it will be removed from Maps.
A negative, inaccurate, or unwelcome opinion without a matching policy violation The business should not report it merely because it dislikes or disputes the review.

Google's Prohibited & restricted content policy says a Maps contribution should reflect a genuine experience. That policy is the relevant test for a Google review, not whether the business likes the wording.

What happens if Google decides a review complies with its policies?

Google says a review that violates its policies will be removed, while a review that complies will remain live. If a compliant review remains visible, the useful business response is to address the customer's concern for future readers. See how to respond to Google reviews for that reply.

Common questions

How long can a new Google review take to appear?
Google says its policy check can take a few days. A recent profile merge can also delay reviews from both profiles, so check again after a few days and confirm that the reviewer used an up-to-date Google Maps app.
Can Google remove a legitimate review by mistake?
Yes. Google says its spam detection can sometimes remove legitimate reviews by mistake. Google directs businesses to contact support when that happens.
Can Google remove a review because a business dislikes it?
No. Google says disagreement or dislike is not, by itself, a removal ground. A review must match a Google content-policy violation to be eligible for removal.
Can Google disable reviews for a business category?
Yes. Google may temporarily disable customer-created content for some profiles or categories. Google also says general-education schools for students aged 6 to 18 can have existing reviews removed and new reviews disabled under its school-specific rule.
What does “Report reviewed - no policy violation” mean?
It means Google evaluated the report and found no policy violation. If the Reviews Management Tool offers an appeal, the business can use the one-time appeal flow. A review that complies with Google's policies remains live after assessment.
