How do I change the email address that owns my Google Business Profile?
The email address that “owns” a Google Business Profile can mean three different things: the Google Account used to sign in, the Google Account that has owner or primary-owner access, or a customer-facing business email shown in profile content. Change a sign-in address in Google Account settings; invite a different account through Business Profile settings → People and access; transfer primary ownership as a separate role change.
Which email address do I need to change?
Start by matching the problem to the workflow. A Google Account email identifies the account used to sign in; it is not the same thing as a Business Profile role. Google’s Google Business Profile guidance handles owners and managers through the profile’s People and access controls, while Google’s account help handles the account email separately. The Google Business Profile hub covers the profile’s other fields.
| What you mean by “change the email” | Where to make the change | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| A different Google Account should manage the profile | Business Profile → More → Business Profile settings → People and access | Invite the new Google Account as a Manager or Owner. |
| A different account should become the primary owner | People and access, after the account is added | The primary owner transfers the Primary owner role to that user. |
| The existing account’s sign-in address should change | Google Account → Google Account email | Google may offer an account-email change; this does not transfer a Business Profile role. |
| Customers should see a different business email | The profile’s customer-facing business information or content | Edit the business contact information separately from account access. |
The access email, the account sign-in email, and a customer-facing business email are separate workflows. Use People and access to give another Google Account access; Google’s Business Profile guidelines say there should be only one profile per business.
How do I give a different email address access to my Business Profile?
An existing owner can invite the new person’s own Google Account. Google’s Manage your Business Profile owners & managers instructions use this sequence: open the Business Profile, select More → Business Profile settings → People and access, select Add, enter the email address, choose Owner or Manager under Access, and select Invite. The invited person accepts with that Google Account; a shared password is not the access method. A Google Group cannot be added as an owner or manager.
Choose Manager when the person needs to work on the profile but should not control the user list. Choose Owner when the person should share ownership or manage the user list. Only the Primary owner can later transfer primary ownership. The answer about adding owners and managers covers the role difference; the access answer covers former employees, agencies, and accounts that no longer appear in the user list.
How do I transfer primary ownership to the new email address?
First add the new Google Account as an Owner or Manager and have the invitation accepted. Then the current primary owner opens the profile and selects More → Business Profile settings → People and access. Select the user, choose Edit next to Access, select Primary owner, and select Save. Google’s Transfer primary ownership of a Business Profile guidance says only the primary owner can make this transfer, and a profile must have another owner or manager before primary ownership can move.
The new owner or manager may receive an error for primary-ownership actions during the first 7 days after being added. That waiting rule covers specific actions, including making someone the primary owner; it does not mean every profile feature is unavailable. If the current primary owner is the only user, add another owner or manager before attempting the transfer.
What if another account owns the verified profile?
If a verified profile for the business is controlled by someone else, request ownership instead of creating a replacement profile. For a storefront or hybrid business, go to business.google.com/add, enter the business name and address, choose the business, select Request Access, complete the form, and select Submit. Google’s Request ownership of a Business Profile guidance emails the current owner, who has 3 days to respond. An approval gives the requester management access; a denial leaves the rejection and appeal or suggested-edit paths; no response may produce an option to claim the profile, but Google says that option is not always available.
For a service-area business with no physical shop or office, Google directs the requester to contact support and enter Transfer ownership of listing in the support form. The Google Business Profile access answer explains the recovery branches before you submit a request.
Can I change the Google Account email used to sign in?
You can change the sign-in email only when Google offers an eligible account path. In Google Account settings, open Google Account email and select Change Google Account email if that option appears. Google’s Change your Google Account email guidance says a Gmail-ending account may be able to change to another @gmail.com address; if the option is absent, the change might not be possible.
Google documents different paths for other account types: moving from Gmail to a non-Gmail address requires deleting the Gmail service, although a non-Gmail address can instead be added as an alternate email; moving from non-Gmail to Gmail requires adding Gmail; and a work, school, or group-managed address must be changed through its administrator.
Changing a Google Account email does not transfer Business Profile ownership: Google handles the sign-in identity in Google Account settings, while an owner changes profile access in Business Profile settings → People and access.
What happens to the old Gmail address after an account-email change?
When Google permits a Gmail-to-Gmail account-email change, the old address becomes an alternate address, mail continues to both the old and new addresses, and the account data is not affected. Google’s Change your Google Account email guidance says the old address can be restored, but the new address cannot be deleted. A new Gmail Account email can be created only once every 12 months and 3 times total, for up to 3 new Gmail addresses and 4 total addresses on the account.
Those limits apply to the Google Account identity, not to Business Profile ownership. If the goal is to give a colleague, buyer, or business-controlled account access to the profile, use the owner-invite and primary-transfer workflow instead.
Where do I change the email customers see?
Google treats customer-facing business information and account access as separate areas. Its Guidelines for representing your business on Google list profile information such as the business name, address or service area, hours, category, website, and phone, and permit a merchant to post its own email, phone number, or social-media handles on its own profile or in responses. Edit the business-facing contact content in the profile rather than changing the Google Account used to sign in. Keep the contact details accurate and do not use them to request personal or confidential information.

Common questions
- Does changing my Google Account email make me the primary owner?
- No. Changing a Google Account email changes the account identity only when Google permits that account operation. Primary ownership is a separate Business Profile role: an existing primary owner must add the destination Google Account and then transfer the role through People and access.
- Can I add a shared inbox or Google Group as the owner?
- No. Google’s Business Profile access guidance requires each user to use their own Google Account and does not allow Google Groups to be added as owners or managers. Invite the individual’s Google Account, then transfer primary ownership if that account should control the profile.
