What can I edit on an unverified Google Business Profile?
An unverified Google Business Profile can have some fields edited, including the business name, category, address, hours, phone number, and website. Verification is needed to edit all profile information and interact with customers. Google also warns that, for an Unverified status in its bulk-location guidance, some edits made before verification may not appear.
Which fields does Google name as editable before verification?
Google's general edit guidance names six fields that an unverified Google Business Profile may still let you change. The table separates those named fields from the rule that changes what happens after you save them.
| Field | Google names it as editable before verification | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Business name | Yes | Do not change it while a postcard verification code is in the mail. |
| Business category | Yes | Adding or editing a category might prompt another verification request. |
| Address | Yes | Do not change it while a postcard code is in the mail. |
| Hours | Yes | Verification is needed to edit all profile information. |
| Phone number | Yes | A pre-verification edit may not appear in the Unverified bulk-location status. |
| Website | Yes | Verification is needed for full editing access. |
Google's Understand what happens to your Business Profile edits guidance names the business name, category, address, hours, phone number, and website as examples of information that can be edited before verification. The Google Business Profile hub gives the wider profile context.
Will an edit made before verification appear?
Not necessarily. Google's Understand your Business Profile status for bulk uploads guidance says an Unverified Business Profile must first be verified before it can be edited, and some edits made before verification may not appear.
The two Google pages address different contexts. The general edit guidance lists fields that may be editable. The bulk-location status table gives a stricter warning for an Unverified status. If Google exposes an edit before verification, treat the saved value as provisional, complete verification, and check the field again afterward.
What does verification unlock?
Google says verification is required to edit all business information and interact with customers. When you verify a business, Google says you gain ownership of its Business Profile and can make sure the business information is accurate.
The Google Business Profile verification guide covers the verification methods Google offers. Until verification is complete, use only the fields Google exposes and do not assume that every profile control is available.
How are edits reviewed after verification?
Google reviews edits to a verified Google Business Profile for compliance with its guidelines. Google's Understand what happens to your Business Profile edits guidance lists three possible statuses:
- Accepted: Google accepted the edit.
- Not approved: Google could not confirm the edit's accuracy.
- Pending: Google is still reviewing the edit.
Google says an edit usually takes up to 10 minutes to review, but a review can sometimes take up to 30 days. Check the profile again when the edit affects the information customers use.
Can changing a category trigger re-verification?
Yes. Google says adding or editing an existing Business Profile category might prompt another verification request so Google can confirm that the business information is accurate.
To change a category, open Edit profile, select Edit next to Business category, make the change, and select Save. The Google Business Profile category guide explains how to choose the most accurate category before making that change.
What should I avoid while a postcard code is in the mail?
Do not edit the business name, address, or category while a postcard verification code is in the mail. Google says that changing any of those fields can make the mailed code unusable.
Follow this sequence when Google offers postcard verification:
- Keep the business name, address, and category unchanged while the postcard is in transit.
- Do not request a new code. Google says a new request invalidates the code already in the mail and sends another one.
- Enter the code before it expires. Google says verification codes expire after 30 days.
Postcard verification is not available for every business. When Google offers it, the code confirms the business at the listed address.
Why did Google ask me to verify again after an edit?
Google says an additional-information request to re-verify is likely when some business details were recently updated. Google may request more details or ask the owner to update the information so the business information remains accurate.
When Google asks for more information, select Get Verified and try to verify the business again. Keep the edited information accurate and consistent with the business before submitting the new verification request.
