Why do my local rankings differ in Wincher?

By Sergey Sulimko, Founder

Wincher reports a local search observation under the keyword, location, device, result surface, and date you configured. Google describes local results through relevance, distance, and popularity, with distance measured from the customer searching. A Wincher number therefore describes one test condition, not one universal Google position.

Which Wincher settings should match before I compare local rankings?

Wincher's Local Rank Tracker asks you to choose a business location, adjust map coverage, and add keywords. Its general rank tracker also separates markets, languages, and desktop or mobile devices, while its dashboard provides daily updates and position history.12 Match these settings before interpreting two readings as a change.

Setting What to compare Why it changes the observation
Keyword The exact text and search intent Google defines relevance by how well a Business Profile matches what someone is searching for.3
Business location The same Google Maps business location and Wincher map coverage Google says distance is measured from the customer searching, so a different location changes the local context.3
Market and language The same market and language Wincher describes markets and languages as separate tracking choices.2
Device Desktop with desktop, or mobile with mobile Wincher describes desktop and mobile as separate tracking choices.2
Date and run The same observation date or comparable run Wincher says it updates rankings daily and keeps position history.2
Result surface Organic page position, Google Maps or local result, or Local Pack presence Wincher describes keyword positions in its general rank tracker and the Local Pack as a separate map feature in its local-tracking guide.25

The guide to tracking local search rankings explains how a location-based check, Business Profile activity report, and Search Console answer different measurement questions. Use the same instrument when you compare a result with its earlier reading.

Why does my location change the Google local result?

Google's Business Profile guidance says local results are mainly based on relevance, distance, and popularity. It defines relevance as how well a Business Profile matches the search and distance as how far each business is from the customer searching.3 Google also says that when a customer does not share a location, it uses what it knows about that customer's location.3

That location dependence explains why two Wincher projects can show different local observations when they use different map points or coverage.13 The answer about why Google Maps results differ between searchers covers the searcher's location context; the Wincher reading adds the tracker settings that produced the observation.

Why can desktop, mobile, Maps, and the Local Pack show different results?

Device and result surface are separate comparison dimensions. Wincher says its rank tracker covers desktop and mobile positions, and its older mobile-tracking guidance describes selecting the device and country for a project before tracking.24 Keep those device choices attached to every reading.

The Local Pack is also a distinct result surface. Wincher describes it as the map section with the top three business listings and describes local tracking as checking whether a keyword triggers that feature and whether a business appears there.5 Compare Local Pack presence with Local Pack presence, and compare an organic page position with the same organic surface.25

How should I compare two Wincher readings?

Use this order so each comparison changes one explainable condition at a time:

  1. Copy the exact keyword text and confirm that both searches have the same intent.12
  2. Select the same Google Maps business location and the same Wincher map coverage or exact location.13
  3. Match the market, language, and device. Do not compare a desktop run with a mobile run.24
  4. Match the observation date or run. Do not compare a fresh daily update with an older history point and call it a same-day result.2
  5. Match the result surface: organic position, Google Maps or local result, or Local Pack presence.25
  6. Record whether the business appears in the Local Pack separately from any numeric position.5
  7. Interpret the observation using Google's relevance, distance, and popularity guidance.3 Describe the Wincher number with its settings, rather than as a universal Google rank.123

The local rank tracker checklist gives the same discipline from the buyer's side: retain the keyword, point, scan date, coverage, and result value beside each observation.

What should I record when I report a local ranking?

Record the instrument and result surface, exact keyword, business location, map coverage, market, language, device, observation date, and whether the business was present in the Local Pack.125 The Google Business Profile performance metrics guide is useful for keeping profile activity metrics separate from placement observations.

This record lets someone repeat the comparison with the same conditions and identify which setting changed when the readings diverge.

Common questions

Is Wincher's number the same as my Google Maps ranking?
No. Wincher's rank tracker reports a configured observation for selected settings. Google Business Profile Help says local results are mainly based on relevance, distance, and popularity, with distance measured from the customer searching. Read the Wincher observation with its keyword, location, device, surface, and date.
Does a desktop result explain a mobile result?
No. Wincher separates desktop and mobile tracking choices, so compare the same device before interpreting a difference.
Why does Local Pack presence differ from a numeric position?
Wincher describes the Local Pack as a map-and-business-listing feature and its general Rank Tracker as reporting keyword positions. A numeric position can describe another result surface, so compare the same surface before reading the number.
