Google Business Profile
Why does my Google Business Profile photo look different in Search and Maps?
Short answer
A Google Business Profile photo can look different in Search and Maps because Google combines owner and customer media and does not promise that a selected cover photo will be the first image. A customer photo update can appear in the Maps app's Updates area while its photo also appears in the Photos tab. An owner photo marked Live is documented as showing on both surfaces. Google does not document a separate Search-versus-Maps crop rule.

Why is a different photo shown first?
If the difference is which image appears first, start with cover-photo selection. That does not prove your chosen cover photo disappeared.
Google lets a business set a cover photo, but Google Business Profile Help says the selected cover photo is not guaranteed to appear first. Google may select a user-submitted photo when the selected cover is low quality or other sources suggest that another photo represents the business better.1
The cover setting does not guarantee the first-image slot. Google does not identify cropping as the reason for the selection.
How can I tell whether the photo came from the owner or a customer?
Check the exact image on the public profile, then check its source and placement before changing the file.
Google says the source and total views appear at the bottom left of Business Profile photos on Search.1 Google also says profiles combine information from the business with information from other sources, including user-contributed photos.2
Use this diagnostic order:
| What you see | What it tells you | What to check next |
|---|---|---|
| A different image is first, but your selected cover is still in the photo collection | Google may be selecting another image for the first position. | Check the cover photo's quality and compare the exact image shown on each surface. |
The image appears in the Maps app's Updates area under By visitors |
The image may be part of a customer photo update. | Check the same item in the profile's Photos tab. |
| The image is an owner upload with a status | The status controls whether Google says the media is visible to customers. | Read the status branch below. |
| The image is visible, but the framing looks different | The public presentation differs in your observation. | Compare the exact source image and do not treat the crop alone as a documented Google rule. |
Google says customer photo updates are found only in the Google Maps app's Updates area, but photos from those updates can also appear in the Photos tab on all platforms and devices.3 That exception is why a customer photo can appear in a Search or Maps photo collection without being an owner upload.
What do Pending, Not approved, and Live mean?
Pending means processing or an unverified profile, Not approved means Google flagged the media, and Live means Google says the media shows to customers on Search and Maps.
For an owner-uploaded photo, use the status as the first branch:
- Pending: Google says the media is uploading or processing, or the profile is not verified. Pending media does not show to customers on Search or Maps. Google says photos and videos can take up to 24–48 hours to show on the Business Profile.1
- Not approved: Google says the media was flagged for a policy violation, so it does not show to customers on Search or Maps. Review the policy reason and the file before submitting another version.1
- Live: Google says the media shows to customers on Search and Maps. If the exact item still looks different, compare its source and placement rather than treating the first-image difference as a missing upload.1
Owner uploads also require the Google Account associated with the Business Profile and a verified profile for the media to show. Google documents that workflow in its photo-upload instructions.4
Is a different crop a Google rule?
Google's public Business Profile photo help does not document a separate Search-versus-Maps crop rule or a setting that lets you control that crop.
If the same photo appears framed differently, compare the full image, the source label on Search, and the location where the image appears in Maps. Treat the crop as an observed presentation difference. Do not diagnose a policy rejection or re-upload solely because the thumbnail is framed differently.
If the owner needs to change the uploaded file for another reason, use the documented steps in how to edit a photo after uploading it to a Google Business Profile. That action does not establish that Google uses a separate crop rule.
When is the photo actually missing?
Treat the photo as missing when the exact item is absent from the public profile or its owner-upload status says it cannot show, not merely because another image appears first.
Check the public customer view on both Search and Maps. Then match the result to the owner status:
- A Pending item is still processing or attached to an unverified profile, and Google says it does not show to customers.
- A Not approved item was flagged and does not show to customers.
- A Live item is documented as showing to customers on Search and Maps, so compare the exact photo and its source before assuming the upload failed.
- An owner upload with no useful status may be a duplicate or may need a file-quality and policy check.

How do I report a customer photo that violates policy?
Report a customer photo only when you can identify a policy problem, and use the surface where you found it.
In Google Search, open the Business Profile, select Photos, select View all photos, choose the item, select Report a problem, choose a reason, and select Submit. In the Google Maps app, open Business, select See Business Profile, select Photos, choose the item, select More, select Report, choose a reason, and submit it.5

Google says the item is reviewed and may be removed, and that the review can take several business days. Repeated requests for the same content can delay review.5 Removal is possible, not guaranteed, so keep the item and the report date in your own record while Google reviews it.
Common questions
- No. Google Business Profile Help says that setting a cover photo does not guarantee that it will appear as the first image. Google may select a user-submitted photo in some cases.
- Yes. Google Business Profile Help says the customer photo update itself is found only in the Google Maps app's Updates area, but photos from those updates can also appear in the Photos tab on all platforms and devices.
- Google Business Profile Help says photos and videos can take up to 24–48 hours to show on the Business Profile. That is Google's stated display window, not a guarantee that every upload will appear within it.
