Google Maps optimization for accountants: categories and profile rules

By Sergey Sulimko, Founder10 min read

An accounting or tax practice should choose the most specific truthful category Google currently offers, list only services it actually provides, describe credentials precisely, and review federal and state advertising rules before publishing.12345

The general local SEO steps still apply. This page adds the accounting-specific choices: profile categories, tax and accounting services, CPA, EA and preparer descriptions, and advertising boundaries.

Which Google Business Profile categories can an accounting or tax practice consider?

Start with the category that best describes the practice's main work, then confirm the exact US-English label in Google's current picker. The dated counts below are discovery context, not a selection rule.61

Maps Agent's September 30, 2026 snapshot of Google's Business Profile API categories.list response for a US-English profile returned 4,049 categories. The table lists the exact labels relevant to accounting, tax, bookkeeping, audit, and payroll practices. The attached counts are all-country DataForSEO listing observations, not Google category totals.6

Google-returned US-English label The practice or service this label names All-country listings observed 2026-09-30
Accountant accountant practice 324,2076
Accounting firm accounting firm 217,5516
Certified public accountant certified public accountant practice or person 128,4296
Tax consultant tax consulting practice 197,3846
Tax preparation service tax preparation service 141,5276
Bookkeeping service bookkeeping service 139,1926
Tax preparation tax preparation practice 101,9976
Auditor auditor practice 38,0226
Payroll service payroll service 34,6666
Financial audit financial audit practice 17,4656
Cost accounting service cost accounting service 4,7306

Accounting is not an offered label in that full US-English snapshot. Do not enter Accounting as a category for a US profile. Accounting firm is the distinct returned label. The all-country DataForSEO row named Accounting cannot establish availability in Google's US-English picker.6

Choose the label that completes Google's “This business IS a” test and describes the practice itself. A service label belongs in the profile only when that service is part of the practice's real identity and scope. Google says to use as few categories as possible and to choose the most specific available option.17

How should an accounting or tax practice choose its primary and additional categories?

Use a specific category from Google's list for the main business, use a general available category only when the specific one is unavailable, and add only a few categories for relevant departments or services.1

Google does not allow custom categories. A primary category should describe the practice's main identity. An additional category can describe a relevant department or service, but it should not become a list of every tax filing, report, or advisory engagement. An independently owned and operated public-facing department should have its own profile rather than a category on the parent profile.1

To edit the categories:

  1. Open the Business Profile and select Edit profile.
  2. Next to Business category, select Edit.
  3. Enter a category in Primary category, then select an available label from the list.
  4. For a secondary choice, select Add another category, enter it, and select the available label.
  5. Select Save.8

Google says adding or changing an existing category may prompt re-verification to confirm that the business information is accurate.8

What services should an accounting or tax practice put in its profile?

Add only services the practice really delivers, such as tax preparation, bookkeeping, audit, payroll, representation before the IRS, or advisory work. If the practice does not offer one, leave it out.2

Google's services editor can suggest offerings for the business type, accept custom services, group them into categories, and add descriptions or prices. Use those fields to make the practice's actual scope clear. Do not add a service because its label attracts a search when the practice does not perform that work.2

Use service wording that matches the engagement:

  • Tax preparation: Include it when the practice prepares the relevant federal, state, or local returns it names.
  • Bookkeeping: Include it when the practice performs the bookkeeping work it describes.
  • Audit: Include it only when the practice offers audit work, not as a substitute for a different accounting service.
  • Payroll: Include it when the practice provides payroll services.
  • IRS representation: Include it when the practice offers representation and the person handling the matter has the rights needed for that engagement.3
  • Advisory or tax planning: Include it when the practice provides that advisory work.

Google says custom service names that violate policy can be rejected. Keep personal information, phone numbers, prices, profanity, and gibberish out of custom service names. If the practice shows a price as a service detail, review that fee statement against the rules below; do not put the price in the service name.24

How should the profile describe a CPA, an EA, or a tax preparer?

Use the credential the person actually holds and describe the work the practice actually performs. A PTIN authorizes paid federal tax-return preparation, but it does not by itself make someone a CPA or an enrolled agent.3

Description What the credential or status means for the profile
Certified public accountant, or CPA The IRS describes CPAs as licensed by a state, District of Columbia, or territorial board, having passed the Uniform CPA Examination, and meeting education, experience, character, ethics, and continuing-education requirements. A CPA may offer several services, including tax preparation or planning, but the profile should name only services the practice provides.3
Enrolled agent, or EA An EA earns the privilege of representing taxpayers before the IRS through the IRS's three-part examination or qualifying former IRS experience. The IRS requires ethical conduct and 72 hours of continuing education every three years, and gives EAs unlimited practice rights before the IRS.9
Paid tax preparer The IRS says a person preparing a federal tax return for compensation must have an IRS-issued PTIN. The IRS lists PTIN holders separately from CPA and EA credentials, and says preparers' skills, education, and expertise can differ.3
IRS representation CPAs, EAs, and attorneys have unlimited representation rights before the IRS, including audits, payment or collection matters, and appeals. Some preparers without those credentials may represent only clients whose returns they prepared and signed, and only before revenue agents, customer service representatives, similar IRS employees, or the Taxpayer Advocate Service. They cannot represent clients whose returns they did not prepare or handle appeals or collection matters, even for a return they prepared. Beginning January 1, 2016, a PTIN holder with no professional credential who does not participate in the Annual Filing Season Program has preparation authority only, with the IRS exception for returns prepared and filed December 31, 2015, or earlier.3

Keep the profile description useful and honest. Explain the services, products, mission, or history that help a prospective client understand the practice, and do not add credentials or representation claims that the relevant person or firm cannot support.73

What advertising rules should an accounting or tax practice check?

Before publishing a claim about IRS-related work, check it against Circular 230 and 31 CFR §10.30, then check the CPA board rules where the practice is licensed.1045

Advertising boundary What to check before publishing
IRS-related claims For an IRS matter, public communication and private solicitation may not contain false, fraudulent, coercive, misleading, or deceptive statements or claims.4
Credential wording An enrolled agent, enrolled retirement plan agent, or registered tax return preparer must not use certified to describe the designation or imply an employer relationship with the IRS. Use the accurate designation and representation description instead.4
Fee statements Section 10.30 permits fixed fees for specific routine services, hourly rates, fee ranges, and an initial-consultation fee. If costs may be incurred, say whether the client is responsible for them. A published rate must remain the maximum charge for at least 30 calendar days after the last publication.4
North Carolina example North Carolina's rule effective June 1, 2026 prohibits deceptive CPA advertising and limits specialty titles to people who meet the granting organization's requirements and remain active and in good standing. It also has registered-name and internet-disclosure rules.5

For example, North Carolina requires a CPA firm name to be registered and bars misleading names, including names that create a false or unjustified expectation of favorable results or capabilities. A CPA or CPA firm offering or performing professional services via the internet must include the registered CPA business or firm name, business phone number, North Carolina certificate number, and North Carolina as the certification jurisdiction.5

North Carolina is an example, not a national rule. Check the state board where the CPA or firm is licensed before using a CPA title, specialty designation, firm name, or state-specific disclosure in an advertisement.5

Circular 230 sets mandatory conduct rules for tax professionals who practice before the IRS, including standards for competency, diligence, ethics, and discipline. A profile can describe a real service without promising a result or implying authority the practitioner does not have.10

What Google Business Profile basics still matter for accounting practices?

Keep the real-world business name, address or service area, categories, services, and description accurate, and maintain one profile for the business.7

  • Use the name customers recognize in the real world across the practice's signage, stationery, website, and other branding. Do not add unnecessary information to the name; Google says that can lead to suspension.7
  • Keep the address or service area accurate and precise.7
  • Choose the fewest categories needed to describe the practice's core business. Do not create a second profile for the same business.17
  • Use the description to explain services, products, mission, or history. Keep it relevant, useful, upfront, and honest. Google says the description should not contain promotions, prices, sales offers, or links.7
  • If the practice also offers financial planning or insurance, review the adjacent guidance for financial advisors and insurance agents before combining those claims with the accounting profile.

The practical test is simple: a customer should be able to tell what the practice does, which services it actually offers, and which credentialed people can perform or represent that work.
