Which Google Business Profile attributes and services should a plumbing business show?

By Sergey Sulimko, Founder10 min read

A plumbing business should use a specific truthful category that represents its main business, put its real drain, sewer, septic, water-heater, and gas work in Services when offered, choose only current profile-specific attributes, and set service areas and hours to match where and when it actually operates.12345

The Google Business Profile guide for plumbers covers the wider setup. The general answer on which Google Business Profile attributes you can control explains the shared editor limits, and the service-area answer covers the general profile model. This plumbing cut adds the trade-specific service examples, custom-service limits, current lookup rule, and emergency-availability boundary.

Plumber's decision Use this profile field What to show
What the business is Category A specific current category that truthfully represents the plumbing business's main business, not each procedure it performs.16
What the business does Services Drain, sewer, septic, water-heater, gas, and other plumbing work the business actually offers, using current suggested or custom options.27
Which customer-facing facts are true Attributes Only factual attributes shown for this profile and true for the business now. The available set depends on profile context.38
When the business is available Regular, special, or More hours The real operating schedule, with temporary and service-specific hours used only when they match the work offered.15
Where crews work Service area Named cities, postal codes, or other areas the business serves, not a radius.4

Which plumbing work belongs in Services rather than categories?

For a plumbing business, the category describes what the business is, while Services describes the plumbing work it actually offers.12

Google's Services guidance gives plumbing examples such as Install faucet and Repair toilet. Use those as examples of service-level entries, not as a complete or permanent plumbing menu. Add the other work the business truly performs through the current Services editor. If the business offers different types of work, group the services into categories and add details such as descriptions or prices in the fields Google provides.2

Google's API documentation says predefined services can differ by category and country, are dynamic, and can change. An integration must check the profile's canModifyServiceList metadata before adding services, then fetch the current options for that profile instead of freezing a copied list. API updates replace the service list through locations.patch with updateMask=serviceItems; individual service updates are not supported.7

Plumbing branch Add it as a Service when Trap to remove
Drain and sewer work The business actually performs the work and the current editor offers a matching suggestion or accepts a truthful custom service.27 Do not promise a permanent drain or sewer option, or turn a procedure into a category or attribute without current profile support.
Septic work The business offers it and the current Services picker or authorized API check returns a suitable supported option. Use a policy-compliant custom service when it does not.27 Do not infer a septic category, attribute, or second profile from the fact that the business is a plumber.
Water-heater work The business offers the specific installation, repair, or other work and can describe it accurately in the current Services editor.27 Do not invent a water-heater category label. Keep any price or description in its dedicated detail field, not in the custom name.2
Gas work The business actually offers the work and the current suggested or custom Service describes it accurately.27 Do not invent a gas-work attribute or category, and do not list work the business cannot provide.

What limits apply to custom plumbing service names?

A custom service name should identify the service and must not put a price, phone number, personal information, profanity, or gibberish in the name.2

Google permits custom services when the needed option is not in the suggested list, but says policy-violating custom services can be automatically rejected. Keep any description or price in the field provided for that detail when the editor offers it. Do not turn a service name into an advertisement or contact line.2

Which Google Business Profile attributes should a plumbing business select?

A plumbing business should select only attributes that describe a current customer-facing fact and that the profile's current picker actually offers.3

Google says some attributes can be edited directly by the business, while others may be populated from customer input. Availability can depend on the location, country, or business category, and attribute names can change over time. That makes a fixed universal list of plumber attributes unreliable.3

For a technical integration, Google's attributes.list method returns the attributes available for a location based on its primary category and country. For a US-English category lookup, pass the profile's current primary-category ID as categoryName, with regionCode=US and languageCode=en. Alternatively, pass the location as parent and omit categoryName, regionCode, and languageCode, as the API reference requires. The result is a current context-dependent lookup, not a universal list for every plumbing business.8

How should a plumber check the current US-English options?

Check the business's current category, country, and profile context before naming a plumbing Service or attribute; Google documents a picker and API path, not a permanent plumber inventory.127386

For a US-English plumbing profile, use this check:

  1. In the profile editor, choose the category that best represents the main business. Do not use a drain, septic, water-heater, gas, or emergency branch as a category unless the current picker offers it and it truthfully describes the business overall.16
  2. Open Edit services and inspect the current plumbing suggestions. Keep Install faucet and Repair toilet as Google's examples, then add only work the business actually offers. Use Add custom service when the needed work is absent and the name follows Google's limits.2
  3. For an authorized integration, first check the profile metadata's canModifyServiceList field. Then use categories.list with regionCode=US, languageCode=en, and the required view to look up current category display names. Use the resolved primary category with Google's Services API to inspect supported predefined service types.76
  4. Use attributes.list with either the current primary-category ID plus regionCode=US and languageCode=en, or the location as parent with those three parameters omitted, to inspect available attribute metadata. Select only facts the business can support today.38
  5. Set service area and hours separately. The category and Services list describe the business and its work; the address, service area, and hours describe where and when the work is available.145

The returned category, Services, and attribute sets can change with category, country, language, location, and profile context. Recheck them when the business changes its offer or profile rather than copying another plumber's labels.7386

How should a plumbing business choose its service-area model?

A plumber that visits customers and does not serve them at the business address should use a service-area profile and remove the address; a plumber that serves customers at its address and also travels can use a hybrid profile with both.4

Google names plumbers as an example of a service-area business. One service-area business profile covers the whole area it serves. A hybrid business serves customers at its address and also visits or delivers to customers, so the address and service area can both be relevant.4

Plumbing business reality Profile choice Check before saving
Crews visit homes or job sites, and customers do not receive service at the base Service-area business Remove the address and keep one profile for the whole served area.4
Customers receive service at a real business address, and crews also travel Hybrid business Show the address and the service areas that the business actually serves.4
The business uses a residential base, and customers do not receive service there Service-area business Hide the address and do not create a second profile for the same service area.49

Google allows up to 20 service areas based on cities, postal codes, or other areas served. Google does not support a radius setting. Its guidance says the boundaries of the overall area shouldn’t be more than about 2 hours of driving time from where the business is based.4

How should a plumber describe emergency, after-hours, or 24/7 availability?

Treat emergency, after-hours, or 24/7 wording as an availability claim, and publish it only when the business can honor the stated schedule.159

Use that wording only when the business can actually provide the stated availability. Google's public profile guidance distinguishes regular hours, special hours for particular days such as holidays or other temporary periods, and More hours for specific services. More hours do not display until regular hours are set and generally should be a subset of the primary hours.159

Availability claim Use Do not do
Emergency or after-hours work Use the hours control that matches the real schedule. Use More hours only when the profile offers the relevant service type, regular hours are set, and the service hours fit within the documented hours model.15 Do not create a universal emergency attribute or use 24/7 wording that the business cannot honor.
Temporary closure or holiday change Use special hours for the affected dates.1 Do not change regular hours to describe a one-day exception.
Normal dispatch availability Use regular hours that reflect when the business is actually available to customers.1 Do not use a category, Service name, or custom attribute as a substitute for truthful hours.

What if a plumbing service or attribute is missing from the profile editor?

Use the current profile-specific option or a policy-compliant custom service, and do not turn a missing label into an invented category or permanent attribute list.2738

Check the profile's category and country context first. For drain, sewer, septic, water-heater, and gas work, add only the work the business actually offers. If no matching predefined item appears, use a truthful custom service that follows Google's naming limits. If an attribute is absent, recheck the current picker or, for an authorized integration, query the current category-and-country inventory. Never copy a label from another plumber's profile as if it were universal.27386
