Google Business Profile service areas for plumbing companies

By Sergey Sulimko, Founder7 min read

A plumbing company should choose its profile model from where customers receive plumbing work, name only the areas its crews actually serve, and check jurisdiction-specific service or license claims against the applicable rules.123

Use the general service-area answer for Google's menu path and field rules. The plumber profile page covers the trade's categories and Services. Apply the plumbing checks below when the profile represents a mobile crew, a customer-facing shop, or both.

Which Google Business Profile model fits a plumbing company?

A plumbing company that sends crews to customer locations but does not receive customers at its base is a service-area business. A plumbing company that receives customers at a real business address and also sends crews is a hybrid business.1

Plumbing business reality Profile model What to check
Crews travel to homes or job sites, and customers do not receive plumbing work at the base Service-area business Remove the address from the profile and show the named service areas.
Customers receive plumbing service at a real business address with permanent on-site signage, and crews also travel Hybrid business Show the real address and the service areas together. Without permanent on-site signage, list the business as a service-area business instead.
The business has separate staffed locations, separate service areas, and separate staff One profile for each qualifying location Keep each profile tied to its own location and operating area.

At one plumbing location, base the profile on the actual staffed office. Google does not permit an unstaffed virtual office. A shop that receives customers and dispatches crews may display its street address and designate its coverage. If the site lacks permanent on-site signage, use the service-area-business model rather than a storefront. A second location qualifies for its own profile only when its operating territory and staff are separate.12

How should a plumbing company choose the areas it serves?

A plumbing company can enter up to 20 service areas based on cities, postal codes, or other areas it serves. It cannot use a radius, and the overall boundary should generally stay within about two hours of driving time from the business base, although Google says a larger area may fit some businesses.12

Keep a named area when the plumbing company accepts ordinary jobs there and its crews can reach the work. Remove an area when the company no longer dispatches to it. A radius is not a permitted service-area setting. If a radius was previously used, Google says it cannot be edited. Replace it with a city, postal code, or another type of area instead.1

Before saving the list, compare it with the current dispatch territory. The service area should describe where the plumbing company can provide the advertised work, not every place where someone might call or submit a lead.

If approved, service area edits may take up to 48 hours to show on your Business Profile.1

What belongs in the service area, Services, and categories?

A plumbing service area names where the company works, Services name the plumbing work it offers, and categories describe what the business is overall. Keep those three fields separate.24

Profile field Plumbing-specific use Check before publishing
Service area Cities, postal codes, or other named areas covered by the plumbing dispatch territory The business sends crews there for the work it advertises.
Services The plumbing work the company offers Google may suggest plumbing services such as Install faucet or Repair toilet. A company can add custom services and group different types of services with descriptions and prices. Custom service names that violate policy are automatically rejected. Avoid profanity, gibberish, personal information, prices, and phone numbers in custom service names.
Categories The plumbing business's overall identity Use as few categories as possible, choose specific and representative options, and describe what the business is, not every service it has. Do not use categories solely as keywords or attributes, or for nearby or related businesses.

Google treats Services as a separate profile field. Suggested options are tailored to the business type, and custom services can be added.24 Google's category guidance says categories should describe the overall core business rather than act as a list of procedures, products, or amenities.2

What license and advertising claims should a plumbing company check?

For California work, a licensed contractor must put its license number on every construction contract, subcontract, call for bid, and every form of advertising. A contractor may advertise construction work only within the areas covered by its license, subject to the CSLB example for C-29 Masonry and C-10 Electrical contractors and the exception for licensed A General Engineering and B General Building contractors. False, misleading, or deceptive advertising is a misdemeanor when it is used to induce improvement contracts and clients might be misled or injured. False, deceptive, or misleading claims in home-improvement ads are also illegal. California law prevents a contractor from stating in advertising or a public presentation that the contractor is bonded.3

The California Contractors State License Board guide says the license-number rule covers construction contracts, subcontracts, calls for bid, and all forms of advertising. The guide states a civil penalty of $100 to $1,000 for a first offense.3

CSLB's C-36 Plumbing classification covers safe water supply, fluid-waste disposal, piping, certain gas appliances and connections, water-heating equipment, and maintenance of those items.5

Before a California plumbing company publishes or updates its profile, check each public claim against the current license record:

  1. Include the license number in all construction contracts, subcontracts, calls for bid, and all advertising.
  2. Advertise construction work only in areas covered by the license. A C-29 Masonry contractor cannot advertise electrical work unless it also holds a C-10 Electrical contractor license. Licensed A General Engineering and B General Building contractors can advertise as general contractors.
  3. Check the service list, profile description, and other home-improvement ads for false, deceptive, or misleading claims. The CSLB guide says this can be a misdemeanor when used to induce improvement contracts if clients might be misled or injured, and it says false, deceptive, or misleading claims in home-improvement ads are illegal.
  4. Do not state in advertising or a public presentation that the contractor is bonded.
  5. Use the license classification, not the Google service-area list, to decide which construction work to advertise.3

The California rule is a jurisdiction-specific advertising check. A plumbing company operating elsewhere should confirm its own licensing authority's requirements before using a license number or scope statement in public copy.

What should a plumbing company verify before saving the profile?

Use this final pass:

  • The profile model matches where customers receive plumbing work.
  • The address is shown only when customers are served at that address.
  • The named areas match the current dispatch territory.
  • Services list work the company actually offers, while categories describe the business overall.
  • Jurisdiction-specific license and advertising claims have been checked against the applicable record.

For a plumbing company, the service area is a dispatch promise: keep it aligned with the places crews actually accept work.
