Distance
Distance is Google's local-search label for the separation between the person searching and each business; when Google has no shared location from that person, it uses the location information available to it.
Google names distance as one of the signals used to assemble local results, alongside relevance and popularity. It describes a relationship between the searcher's position and the businesses considered for the query. Google does not publish a weighting or equation for it, and says businesses cannot pay to improve local ranking.1 The Google Maps hub covers the place-based surface where this signal is visible.
Google defines a service-area business as one that visits or delivers to customers without serving them at its address. It allows one profile for the entire area the business serves. A business with age-restricted products or services needs a storefront. Google's service-area field uses cities, postal codes, or another area type, not a circle around the business. Google allows up to 20 areas and says the overall boundary should not exceed about 2 hours of driving time from the base.2 Read the service-area business answer for the profile setting.
That territory entry is not Google's disclosed distance equation. The guidance does not say that selecting a city or postal code assigns a particular local position. A rank check is different again. Local Falcon says its report chooses a scan radius and grid size, then records the listing's rank at each selected point for the chosen query.3 The Google Maps ranking answer explains why a point-by-point observation should not be read as a fixed metric.
Distance therefore is not a Business Profile radius field, a guaranteed placement, or a Google-issued geo-grid number. It is the location relationship Google describes; a service-area entry and a vendor's sampled rank report answer different questions.
