Local search intent

Definition

Local search intent is the job a person is trying to complete with a local search, such as checking a known business, finding one to contact or visit, comparing local options, or researching before contact. It is a reader-behavior label, not a documented Google ranking signal.

Google documents local results on Search and Maps, and defines relevance as how well a Business Profile matches the search.1

What jobs can local search intent describe?

BrightLocal's 2026 survey of 1,227 US consumers reported four search jobs:2

Searcher's job What it means
Check a known businessGet details, such as a phone number.
Find one to contact or visitFind a local option when ready to act.
Compare optionsLook at a few businesses before choosing.
Research before contactExplore costs or options without contacting anyone yet.

These are BrightLocal's reported search jobs, while Google's local-ranking guide separately describes the factors it names for local results.12 They can occur in Google local search and across the broader local discovery journey. A category-, product-, or service-led query without a known business is a discovery search.

Is local search intent a Google ranking factor?

Google does not name local search intent as a ranking factor. Its current summary names relevance, distance, and popularity as the main bases for local results.1 Local search intent describes purpose, not rank. It does not promise appearance, a position, or a choice. See local-business decision speed and shortlist size statistics for the survey evidence and decision timing.2

Google's cited local-ranking guide does not use “local search intent” as a product label; the phrase is used in local-marketing writing.13 This definition is Maps Agent's, written against the cited Google documentation and BrightLocal survey.4
