The type is defined in the Schema.org vocabulary.1,2 Its hierarchy places LocalBusiness under both Place and Organization, which describes vocabulary relationships rather than a Google Business Profile hierarchy.1 JSON-LD is a separate layer: W3C defines it as a JSON-based format for serializing linked data, and Schema.org lists JSON-LD as one format that can carry its vocabulary alongside Microdata and RDFa.2,3
LocalBusiness is narrower than a generic organization label. The type is for a specific physical business or branch, such as a restaurant, bank branch, medical practice, club, or bowling alley.1 It does not create, verify, or claim a Google Business Profile. Google describes that profile as a Google-hosted local storefront and listing on Search and Maps that the owner can claim and manage.4 areaServed is a related Schema.org property, not the profile's service-area setting.
For implementation, Google says to define each local business location as LocalBusiness and use the most specific subtype possible, such as Restaurant, DaySpa, or HealthClub.5 The LocalBusiness schema answer covers what that markup does and does not tell Google, while the LocalBusiness and Service schema template covers the copyable implementation shape.
