Glossary
Relevance
In Google's local search guidance, relevance means how well a Google Business Profile matches what someone is searching for.1
Google lists relevance alongside distance and popularity as the main bases of local results. The three factors work together to help Google find the best match for a customer's search.1 The wider local SEO explanation places that wording in context. Relevance is one part of a local result, not a complete description of visibility.
Google says complete and detailed profile information helps it understand the business and match it to relevant searches.1 This is Google's profile-completeness advice, not an exhaustive list of separately named relevance factors or a guarantee for any field. Google's examples include:
- the business category, so Google knows what kind of business it is;
- the full address, when customers can visit that location;
- business hours, including special hours; and
- attributes such as parking or Wi-Fi.1
This information should be complete and accurate. Google's advice is to help customers understand what a business does, where it is, and when they can visit.1 The primary category entry explains the category field, while the Google Business Profile entry explains the listing itself. Local SEO beyond the profile covers the wider public business information.
| Local-results term | The question it answers | What makes it different from relevance |
|---|---|---|
| Relevance | Does the Business Profile match this search? | It concerns the fit between the profile and the search.1 |
| Distance | How far is each business from the person searching? | It concerns the searcher's location. If the customer does not share it, Google uses what it knows about the customer's location.1 |
| Popularity, called Prominence in Google's detailed section | How well-known is the business? | It concerns recognition around the business, including information such as links from websites and reviews.1 |
Google's detailed local-ranking section labels the third factor Prominence and describes it through how widely known a business is. It says prominent places are more likely to appear in results. It also points to websites linking to a business and its review count, and says more reviews and positive ratings can help its local ranking.1
Original illustrative example, not a measured ranking result: a customer searches for emergency furnace repair. An HVAC Business Profile that accurately represents furnace repair is a relevance match. A closer general contractor can be nearer on distance while matching that search less closely. This scenario illustrates Google's terms; it is not a Google example, a test, a customer result, or a prediction of which listing Google will show.1
Google's local-ranking guidance publishes no numeric weight, threshold, formula, or guaranteed position for relevance.1 Google says there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking and that it does its best to keep search-algorithm details confidential.1 A complete profile can help Google understand a business, but no listed profile detail guarantees a position.1
Google's local-results use of relevance is not the same as the page-level Relevance concept in How Search Works. That page says Google's Search systems analyze content to assess whether it contains information relevant to what someone is looking for. The local-results term describes how a Business Profile matches a search; the page-level term describes how webpage content relates to a Search query. The shared word does not mean that the two pages publish the same signals, weights, or formula.2
