Google Business Profile
How do I check whether my Google Business Profile category change was accepted?
Short answer
Do not treat Save as acceptance. Google's edit-status guidance says to open Check your edit status and record Accepted, Pending, or Not approved. Accepted means updated information displays on the Business Profile; check Google Search and Google Maps separately because edited information can take up to 3 days to appear in Search.

What should I record when I save a category change?
Save records the owner submission, not a live or accepted category. Google says it reviews changes before updating them live on the profile.2
Record these details before checking the result:
- The Business Profile or business account, the category before the edit, and the exact category submitted.
- The date and time you selected Save.
- The exact label shown by Google's Check your edit status link: Accepted, Pending, or Not approved.2
- The category displayed in the owner view and the time you checked it.
If you need to correct the category itself, use the category-selection guidance for a Google Business Profile. That page covers which category should describe the business; this page covers what happens after you save it.
What do Accepted, Pending, and Not approved mean?
Google defines these three labels for edits made to verified Business Profiles. Each label describes a different state, so record the exact one instead of treating every result as approval or rejection.2
| Status | What Google says it means | What to record next |
|---|---|---|
| Accepted | The updated information displays on the Business Profile.2 | Record the category shown in the owner view and the status-check time, then check Search and Maps separately. |
| Pending | The edit is still under review. Review usually takes up to 10 minutes, but sometimes takes up to 30 days.2 | Keep the submitted category, the exact label, and each status-check time. Do not call the category accepted while it is Pending. |
| Not approved | Google might not approve the change when it cannot confirm its accuracy. An appeal might be available.2 | Keep the submitted category, the status label, the accuracy evidence, and the appeal or support route for your region. |
Google states this review timing for edits to verified Business Profiles. Its help page separately says that an unverified profile can edit some information, including category, but must be verified to edit all information.2 Do not apply the verified-profile timing automatically to every unverified edit.
How can I check whether an accepted category is visible on Search and Maps?
An Accepted owner-edit status is the first check, not proof that the category is already visible on every public surface. Open the public Business Profile in Google Search and Google Maps separately, then record the category shown, the surface, the profile or query you checked, and the date and time.3
Google says only verified businesses can show their business information on Maps and Search. Google also says edited business information can take up to 3 days to appear in Search. That is a public display window, not an approval deadline, so a missing public category does not by itself change an owner edit to Not approved.3
What if the old category appears after I submit the change?
Do not label the edit Not approved just because the old category is still visible. Open the profile editor and look for a notification at the top and blue text on the affected field. Google says blue text shows information changed by Google, while the notification identifies Google updates on the profile.4
Record the current category, the category you submitted, the affected field, the blue-text signal, the notification, and the time you checked. Google may update a profile after reports say information is incorrect or outdated, so a Google-applied update is a separate branch from the owner-edit statuses.4

If the notice is a suggested edit, keep that record separate too. Google says certain suggested edits can generate an email or in-product notification with 4 days to accept or reject, while some suggested edits can be applied without prior review when policy compliance requires it.4

What does a re-verification message mean after a category edit?
A re-verification message is a separate verification state, not an Accepted, Pending, or Not approved result. Google's category guidance says adding or editing an existing category might require verification again, so the trigger is conditional.7
| Signal | Google's meaning | What to record |
|---|---|---|
| Get verified appears again | Google says it could not completely verify the business and directs you to try again.5 | The exact prompt, the category-edit time, and the verification method Google offers. |
| Give additional info to re-verify appears | Google says this is likely related to recently updated business details.5 | The prompt, the requested information, and the category-edit time. |
| Review issues appears after video verification | Google says the video was not accepted.5 | The notification, the issue text, the evidence used, and the next submission time. |
Google says verification reviews take up to 5 business days, with rare longer reviews.5 The owner-edit review window is usually up to 10 minutes and sometimes up to 30 days.2 Keep the two windows separate. A re-verification request is not itself proof that the profile is suspended; the category-change safety answer explains that distinction.
What should I do if the category edit is Not approved?
| What you see | What to check | What to do next |
|---|---|---|
| Not approved with no other notice | Does the category describe what the business is, or only a service, product, feature, amenity, keyword, nearby business, or related business? | Use Google's This business IS a ... test. Keep only a few categories that describe the core business, and choose the most specific truthful option from the list.8 |
| The category you want is not offered in the editor | The options Google presents after Edit profile → Business category. | Choose a more general category that truthfully describes the business. Google does not allow custom categories.7 |
| Get verified or another verification prompt appears | The profile's verification status and the method Google offers. | Follow the offered method. Verification methods depend on the business type, public information, region, or business hours, so do not treat this prompt as the owner-edit result Not approved.57 |
| The profile is suspended, disabled, or access is restricted | A profile-level notice in the profile or appeals tool, not only the edit label. | Use the reinstatement or restriction path first. A rejected edit is not itself a suspension notice, and Google says not to create a second profile for the same business.6 |
Google's category guidance says categories should describe the overall core business, not every product or service. It specifically says not to use categories as keywords or attributes, or to represent another nearby or related business. For a co-located department that is independently owned and operated, Google says the department should have its own profile.8

If the submitted category fits the real business but the edit remains Not approved, check the appeal route shown for the profile and region. UK and EEA businesses use Google's Appeals tool for rejected business-information edits. Businesses outside the UK and EEA use Contact us for the same edit type.6 For UK and EEA appeals, the Appeals tool can show the reason, policy link, eligibility, and status. Add accurate supporting evidence if the flow allows it; if you attach documents, make the business name and address on them match the profile. Submit once, and do not send another appeal for the same issue before a decision.6 Google says appeal reviews and decisions can take up to 5 business days.6
Use the quarterly Google Business Profile audit to record the edit status, category, verification state, and next check alongside the rest of the profile. Keep a category rejection separate from any profile-level access problem; understanding your Google Business Profile covers that wider record.
Common questions
- No. Google's edit-status guidance defines Accepted by what displays on the Business Profile. Google's public-visibility guidance says edited information can take up to 3 days to appear in Search, so check the owner status and the public Search and Maps views as separate observations.
- No. Google's category guidance says adding or editing an existing category might require verification again. The word “might” makes re-verification a possible follow-up, not a guaranteed result of every category edit.
