Troubleshooting

Why can't I add a location to my Google Business Profile business group?

A Google Business Profile location can fail to join a business group when the wrong organization or group is selected, the wrong path is being used for an existing location, the account lacks the required access, the transfer fails Google's organization checks, verification is pending, or an import row does not match the group. First decide whether the location is new or already exists. If verification is the branch, Google says its review can take up to 5 business days; postcard codes usually arrive within 14 days and expire after 30 days.12

First, is the location new or already in a profile?

The first check is whether you are creating a new location or placing an existing location into another group. Google uses different paths for those two jobs.1

What you see What it points to First action
The business does not have a profile yet New-location path Select the correct organization and business group, then choose Add location and follow the prompts to create the profile.1
The profile already exists, but you are looking for it in the group's Add location flow Existing-location path Open the location, choose Users, then choose Invite new users and Add one of your groups. Select the group and role, then choose Add.1
The location is visible, but Invite new users is missing Access branch Ask the location owner to grant the access required for the group invitation. Google identifies the missing control as an access symptom.1
The location is in one group and you want it in another Additional-group or transfer branch Use the existing-location path for additional management, or check the transfer conditions before moving it.13

An existing location can belong to multiple business groups. Do not use the new-profile flow for an existing profile: that flow creates a new profile, while the existing-location path changes group access.14

Did I choose the right organization and business group?

Choose the organization first, then the business group. In Business Profile Manager, open the Businesses tab, choose the correct organization when more than one is available, and use the group drop-down before selecting Add location. A green checkmark can identify a group owned by a bulk-verified account, but it is only a cue about that group.1

If the expected group is missing from the drop-down, stop and check the signed-in account, the selected organization, and whether that account owns or manages the target group. Google says a profile can be transferred only to a business group that the signed-in user owns or manages.3

The Business group glossary entry explains the difference between a shared group and an individual Business Profile. That distinction matters here because group membership and profile access are separate permissions.

Does my role allow me to add the location or group user?

Group roles and individual profile roles are different. A business-group owner can manage group owners and managers, delete the group, and transfer group ownership. A business-group manager can add, edit, and delete profiles in the group, but cannot add or remove users from the group. Only a group owner can add a group manager.5

Access you have What it lets you do What it does not let you do
Business-group owner Manage group users and transfer group ownership Still needs the organization and group that contain the location.
Business-group manager Add, edit, and delete profiles in the group Add or remove users from the business group.
Individual Business Profile owner Manage people and access for that profile Bypass a different business group's ownership or organization boundary.
Individual Business Profile manager Most profile access Add or remove profile users, or remove the profile.

If you are adding a person rather than a group, invite that person's own Google Account. Google says each user needs an individual Google Account for Business Profile access, and Google Groups cannot be added as owners or managers of a profile. A Google Group is not the same thing as a Google Business Profile business group.56

For the individual-profile handoff, use the Google Business Profile ownership and access guide. It covers the People and access path and the boundary between Owner and Manager.

Is the location eligible to move between these business groups?

Check the target group and the organizations behind both groups before retrying a transfer. Google says the signed-in user must own or manage the destination group. For a location with manager access moving between business groups in organization accounts, the source and destination groups must be primarily owned by the same organization, and the signed-in user must be an owner or member of that organization.13

Transfer check What to confirm
Destination group The signed-in user owns or manages it.
Organization boundary The source and destination groups are primarily owned by the same organization when the organization-account rule applies.
Signed-in identity The user is an owner or member of that organization.
Existing-location workflow The location is handled as an existing profile, not recreated as a new one.

Having manager access to the location alone does not remove the destination-group or organization checks. If one of these checks fails, correct the account or group relationship first.

Is verification blocking management of the location?

Verification is a separate branch when the location exists but Google blocks editing business information or customer interaction. Google says verification is required for those actions, the available methods depend on the business type, public information, region, or business hours, and some profiles need more than one method.2

What you see What to do next Google timing
A verification method is offered Complete the method shown for the profile. Do not assume a phone, email, or postcard method exists if Google has not offered it. The review can take up to 5 business days after the steps are complete. Rare reviews may take longer.2
A postcard code is in the mail Do not change the business name, address, or category while waiting for the code. Most codes arrive within 14 days and expire after 30 days.2
A code no longer works Request the current method Google offers and check whether the profile name, address, or category changed, or whether a new code was requested. Google says those changes can make the earlier code invalid.2

An unverified location is a verification-status branch, not by itself proof that the location is categorically ineligible for a business group. Keep the group diagnosis separate from the verification status.

Did a spreadsheet or import mismatch create the problem?

Treat a bulk upload as a group-specific import. Google says each business group requires its own spreadsheet, and a single spreadsheet cannot be imported across multiple business groups.3

Import symptom Check
The file contains locations from more than one group Split the work so each business group has its own spreadsheet.
A row has no usable business identifier Add a Business code for every business. Each code must be different, no longer than 64 characters, and free of surrounding spaces and special characters such as <, >, or a URL.7
Existing information disappears after an upload Check for a column heading with no data. Google warns that an empty column can delete existing information for that field.7
A new business was added by mistake Read the alert showing the missing columns and correct the row before uploading again.7
A new address cannot be verified Provide latitude and longitude when Google requires them for that new business, then follow the verification path for the upload.7
The location is disapproved or verification is delayed Check for upload errors and quality-guideline issues. An email address without the business's official domain can require extra verification steps and take longer.78

These checks can explain why a bulk-uploaded location is disapproved or delayed in verification. They do not guarantee that a corrected upload will be accepted, so keep the row-level alert and the group name with your next check.

Should I create another profile or delete the business group?

No. Stop before either action until the organization, access, transfer, verification, and import branches have been checked. Google says a business can have only one Business Profile, and a duplicate profile will not show on Search or Maps. If the verified profile is owned by someone else, request access to that profile instead of creating another one.4

Removing a mistaken duplicate removes its content and linked managers, so confirm which profile is the duplicate before removing anything. Deleting a business group cannot be undone, and Google requires all businesses in it to be removed or transferred first.34

What should I do when none of these checks explains it?

Keep the existing location and group intact, record the signed-in account, organization, group, exact screen label, and whether the location is new or existing, then repeat only the matching workflow. Use the status-specific wait rather than applying a verification wait to a permission or transfer problem.

Status you can confirm Wait or next check
Verification steps completed, review pending Allow up to 5 business days after the verification steps. Rare reviews may take longer.2
Postcard verification requested Most codes arrive within 14 days. A code expires after 30 days, and changes to the business name, address, or category can invalidate it.2
Bulk-upload error or disapproval Correct the highlighted row, required field, group scope, or quality issue, then follow the verification state shown for the upload.78
Missing Invite new users control Return to the location owner or the account with the required access. Do not recreate the location.1

The exact screen state is the useful handoff. It tells you whether to stay in the existing-location path, correct group ownership, wait for verification, or repair the import.

Common questions

Yes. Google says an existing location can be added to multiple business groups. Open the location, choose Users, then use Invite new users and Add one of your groups for the additional group.
