Troubleshooting
Your business is not showing up on Google Maps
If your business has disappeared from Google Maps, it is almost always one of four things: the profile is unverified, it is suspended, it has been merged into a duplicate, or it is live but ranking below where you are looking. They need different fixes and they are easy to tell apart, so find out which one you have before you change anything.
Tell them apart first: about ten minutes
| Check | What you do | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Is the profile live at all? | Search the exact business name plus the city, signed out, in a private window | Nothing at all → unverified, suspended or removed. It appears → this is a ranking question, not a visibility one |
| Is it suspended? | Sign in to the profile. A suspended profile says so at the top and its public listing is gone | Suspension has its own path, below |
| Is there a duplicate? | Search the name and the old address. Look for a second pin with the same phone number | A merge or a duplicate can leave the wrong copy public |
| Are you searching from where your customers are? | Maps results are personalised by the searcher's location | You are very often just looking from the wrong place |
🔴 Searching for your own business while signed in and sitting at your desk is not a test. Google personalises by location and history; the result you see is not the result a customer two miles away sees.
Fix in this order
- Unverified. An unverified profile does not appear publicly. Finish verification. Google chooses the method (video, phone, postcard, or a live video call), and you cannot pick it. If the code never arrives, request it again rather than creating a second profile.1
- Suspended. Do not edit anything else, do not create a replacement profile, and do not remove content in the hope it helps. Read the reinstatement path, gather the evidence it asks for, and file one request.2 A second profile created while the first is suspended usually gets suspended too.
- Duplicate or merged. Two profiles for one business can leave the wrong one public. Report the duplicate through the profile rather than deleting it: deleting the wrong one loses its reviews.
- It is live, just not where you looked. Then the question is ranking, not visibility, and the three things Google names are relevance, distance and prominence.3
What makes this worse
- Creating a second profile. It never fixes the first one, and it splits your reviews across two listings.
- Changing the business name to include keywords. It is against the guidelines for representing your business and is a common trigger for suspension.4
- Changing the address to somewhere you do not operate. Same.
- Editing everything at once after a suspension. You lose the ability to tell what mattered.

Common questions
- How long does a reinstatement take?
- Google does not publish a time. Its reinstatement page describes the process, not a service level. File once with the evidence it asks for and wait; filing repeatedly does not speed it up.
- My profile shows for the business name but not for what I do.
- That is a ranking question, not a visibility one. The profile exists and Google can find it. It is not eligible, or not prominent enough for the category searches yet. Start with the primary category.
- Can I get the profile back if it was removed, not suspended?
- Removal and suspension are different states and the profile tells you which one it is. A removed profile is generally re-created and re-verified; a suspended one is appealed.
