Troubleshooting

Why is my Google Business Profile opening date missing or wrong?

By Sergey Sulimko, Founder6 min read

First check the profile in the Google Account linked to the correct business, then compare the owner view with the same profile signed out. Google requires only the month and year for an opening date and allows a future date up to one year ahead.12 After you enter the date and verify the business, Google says the profile shows up on Google 90 days before opening.12 An edit to a verified Business Profile usually takes up to 10 minutes to review, but Google says review can take up to 30 days.3

First, check whether the problem is only in your view

The first check is the exact profile, account, and verification state, not another date submission. Open the Google Business Profile in the Google Account linked to that profile, select Edit profile, and look for Opening date.12 Then check the same listing signed out or in a private window on Google Search or Maps.

Google says a business must be added or claimed and its Business Profile verified to show on Search, Maps, and other Google services.2 Some businesses may need verification before they can change information, and edits require the linked Google Account.2

What you see What to check next
Opening date is missing in the editor Confirm the Google Account, the claimed state, and verification before treating the field as broken.2
The field is present and the saved date is correct in the editor, but the public profile differs Open Check your edit status and use the status branch below.3
The verified profile has an entered future opening date but is not visible publicly Check how far away the opening date is. Google says the profile appears 90 days before opening.12
The date is visible but the year or month is wrong Check what the date is meant to describe, then correct the Opening date field rather than the hours.2

Is the opening-date value valid and about the right event?

An opening date means when the business first opened, or the planned opening month for a business that has not opened yet.12 Google requires only the year and month, so enter those fields.12 Google allows a planned date up to one year in the future, and an already-open business can enter the date it opened.12

If Google rejects the value or the displayed date is not the one you intended, check these points in order:

  1. If the business is already open, use the month and year when it first opened, because Google's opening-date field describes when the business first opened.2
  2. If the business has not opened, confirm that the planned date is no more than one year ahead.12
  3. Reopen Edit profile → Opening date and save the corrected month and year.1

For the complete entry path, use the how to add a Google Business Profile opening date answer and Google's opening-date guide. Google also says it uses various sources to determine how long a business has been in operation.2 If the historical date is wrong, a merchant can set the correct opening date.2

Is the future opening date outside Google's 90-day visibility window?

After the date is entered and the business is verified, Google says the profile shows up on Google 90 days before the opening date.1 If the opening date is more than 90 days away, a missing public profile is consistent with Google's documented rule.1

If the opening date is within 90 days, check that the business is verified and then check the edit status. Google says you can engage with your community during that 90-day pre-opening period.1 Before the business is officially open, users cannot suggest edits or post content such as reviews or photos on the profile.1 After opening, Google says a Recently opened label appears for 90 days.1

Did Google accept, reject, or delay the edit?

The edit status tells you whether to wait, correct the information, or compare the public profile. Google reviews edits to a verified Business Profile before updating them live.3 It documents three relevant outcomes:3

Status What it means What to do
Pending The edit is still under review.3 Wait for the documented review window. Google says review usually takes up to 10 minutes, but sometimes takes up to 30 days.3
Not approved Google might not approve the change when it cannot confirm its accuracy. An appeal might be available.3 Compare the month and year with the business's actual first opening date, confirm the profile is verified, and use the appeal option if Google offers one.23
Accepted Google says the updated information displays on the Business Profile.3 Compare the same profile signed out. If it still looks wrong, confirm the profile identity and that you are checking the opening-date field, not another date or listing.

Do not treat Pending as a rejection: Google says the edit is still under review.3 For Not approved, compare the accuracy of the date and use the appeal option if Google offers one.3 For the wider diagnosis of edit outcomes, see Google's Business Profile edit-status guidance. For the owner edit path, use the editing and removing your Google Business Profile answer and Google's profile-editing guide.

Are you checking the opening date when you mean business hours?

The opening date records when the business first opened; it does not tell customers whether the business is open today. Google separates the date from four kinds of availability information:2

If you need to show customers... Use this field It describes
When the business first opened Opening date The business's first opening date
The regular weekly schedule Main hours When the business is open
Holidays or temporary schedule changes Special hours Hours for holidays or other temporary periods
Different schedules for different features More hours Hours for different features the business offers

If the symptom is “customers cannot tell when we are open,” edit the relevant hours field. If the symptom is that Google shows the wrong historical age or first-opening date, stay in Opening date. If Google changes a saved field or another source keeps changing it, follow the Google Business Profile information keeps changing breakdown.

What should you do when none of these checks explains it?

Record the exact profile, owner-view value, public-view value, and edit status, then apply only the wait that matches the branch you can see. Use the 90-day rule only after the future date is entered and the profile is verified, the 10-minute-to-30-day window for a Pending edit, and the appeal option only when Google marks the edit Not approved and offers one.13

If the status is Accepted but the public profile still shows a different opening date, repeat the signed-out check against the exact business name and location before submitting another edit. If the status is Not approved, compare the date with the business's real first opening month and year before using the appeal path. If the date keeps changing after correction, follow the Google Business Profile information keeps changing breakdown and preserve the notification or status details you can see.

Common questions

Can customers suggest edits before the business officially opens?
No. Google says users cannot suggest edits to the business information or post content such as reviews or photos on the Business Profile until the business is officially open.
Why does Google show a different number of years in business?
Google says it uses various sources to determine how long a business has been in operation. If the historical date is wrong, compare it with the business's actual first opening month and year and set the correct Opening date.
