Troubleshooting
Why does Google keep changing my Business Profile information?
Google can change a Business Profile because Google compiles profile information from a business website, licensed third-party data, user contributions, and Google's own interactions with a local business. Reports that information is inaccurate or outdated can trigger a Google update. Start in your Google Business Profile at Edit profile: a notification and blue text identify information changed by Google. Then compare the changed field with real-world evidence and correct it from the Google Account linked to the profile.1234 Google says the edit usually takes up to 10 minutes to review, but sometimes up to 30 days.5
A user-suggested edit is a separate path. For certain suggestions, Google notifies the verified owner and gives 4 days to accept or reject the suggestion. Google may publish a suggestion automatically when other public information, such as the business website, supports it, and some suggestions may be applied without prior owner review.3 That is why a correct value can change again even when the owner did not edit it.
How can I tell what changed my Business Profile?
Open Business Profile > Edit profile and look for the first matching signal:
| What you see | What it tells you | What to do next |
|---|---|---|
| A notification at the top and a field shown in blue | Google changed that information. The blue indicator identifies a Google update, but it does not identify whether the underlying information came from a website, a user, a licensed data provider, or Google's interaction with the business. | Open the notification, record the changed field, and compare it with the business's current public evidence.31 |
| An email or in-product notice about a suggested edit | A user-suggested change may be waiting for the owner's response. Google says the owner has 4 days to accept or reject certain suggested edits after notification. | Respond within the window. Check the business website and other public information that may support the suggestion.3 |
| Your own saved edit shows Accepted, Not approved, or Pending | Google reviewed an owner edit for guideline compliance. Accepted means the new information displays, Not approved means Google could not confirm it, and Pending means the edit is still under review. | Use the status to choose the next step. These labels describe the edit; they are not the restricted-profile appeal status. 56 |
| No Google-update notification or blue field | The editor is not identifying a Google update. The screen does not provide a complete history of every source that may have supplied a value. | Check the profile's public details against the business website, real-world branding, and the Collected info view if it is available.317 |
Did Google change the field, or did a user suggest an edit?
Google says it may update a Business Profile when reports indicate that the information is inaccurate or outdated. The owner receives a notification and an alert in the profile's Edit profile section.2
Google Maps also lets a user select Suggest an edit, choose an attribute such as the place name, category, or daily opening hours, make or report a change, and submit it. Google says a photo can help verify a suggestion, and that all submitted edits are reviewed before they are published.8
The response rule is not the same for every suggestion. Google says certain suggested edits generate an email or in-product notification before publication, with 4 days to accept or reject. If the owner does not respond, Google may publish the suggestion when other public information supports it. Google also says it may apply some policy-compliant suggested edits without prior owner review.3
Treat Google update, suggested edit, and owner edit as three different records. The first tells you Google changed a field, the second tells you a Maps user proposed a change, and the third tells you the owner submitted a correction. The signals overlap in the final profile, so record the notice and the field before changing it again.235
Why are my Google Business Profile hours changing?
First decide which kind of hours is wrong. Google separates regular opening hours, temporary or holiday hours, and schedules for different features offered by the business.9
- Use main hours for the regular weekly schedule.
- Use special hours for holidays or other temporary periods.
- Use more hours when different features offered by the business have different schedules.
Then open Business Profile > Edit profile, choose the relevant hours field, and compare the saved value with the schedule the business currently publishes elsewhere. A holiday closure belongs in special hours, not as a permanent change to main hours. A service that operates on a different schedule belongs in more hours, not in a misleading general schedule.9
If the field is blue or an alert names a Google update, inspect the notice before saving a replacement. If the change came through a user suggestion, check the business website and submit evidence that shows the current schedule. Google does not document a fixed automatic schedule for changing hours, so use the signal and the field's evidence to identify the next branch.23
Why is Google changing my Business Profile category?
Google says the primary category should best describe the business, and the owner must select a specific category from Google's list. A business cannot create its own category.10
To correct it, open Business Profile > Edit profile, select Edit next to Business category, enter the category, select the matching option from the list, and save. Use Add another category only for additional categories that accurately describe the business. Google's edit guidance allows up to 9 additional categories beyond the primary category, but the limit is not a reason to use all 9.1011
If the desired specific category is not available, Google recommends choosing a general category. If Google asks for verification after a category edit, follow that prompt. Google's guidance says an existing category edit might require verification again; it does not say that every category edit will do so.10
Do not treat a category change as proof that Google removed the profile or as a guarantee of a ranking outcome. Correct the category that most accurately describes the business, then check the edit status and public profile.
Why is Google changing my business name?
Google says the Business Profile name must match the name used on real-world business signage, stationery, and other branding. Enter that name in Business Profile > Edit profile, then save the correction.12
Compare the saved name with the business's current customer-facing materials before submitting another edit. If a user suggestion or a Google update changed the name, use the notification and the real-world evidence to explain the correction. Changing the name after verification might require verifying the business again, but Google does not say that every name edit triggers re-verification.12
Why does the old information return after I edit it?
The profile may be receiving the same field from another source. Google says profile information can come from a business website, licensed third-party data, factual information contributed by users including business owners, and Google's interactions with a local place or business.1 A correct owner edit therefore does not identify which other source supplied a later value.
Check the source trail Google exposes when Collected info is available: Business Profile > Edit profile > Collected info. Google says this view can show the information it collected, its source, and the collection date. The feature is available only in select regions, languages, and business categories. Deleting collected information removes it from Google's records but does not change other profile details.7
Use this correction sequence:
- Record the field, the value you see, the date, and whether the field is blue.3
- Open Collected info if the feature is available and note the source and collection date.7
- Compare the field with the business website and the real-world evidence that governs that field. Use signage, stationery, or branding for the name; the actual schedule for hours; and the business's primary activity for the category.12109
- Sign in to the Google Account linked to the profile. On Search, open the profile, select Edit profile, change the field, and select Save. In the Google Maps app, open Business, tap Edit profile, make the change, and tap Save.4
- Record the resulting status and check the public profile after the relevant review window. Treat Pending as an edit still under review; suspension uses a separate restricted-profile process.56
How long will my correction take?
Google says Business Profile edits usually take up to 10 minutes to review, but a review can sometimes take up to 30 days. That is a review window, not a promise that Google will approve the edit or display it immediately.5
| Status or event | What Google says | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Accepted owner edit | The new information displays. | Check the public profile and keep the evidence used for the correction.5 |
| Pending owner edit | The edit is still under review. | Wait for the review result before treating the edit as rejected or submitting a different explanation.5 |
| Not approved owner edit | Google could not confirm the accuracy of the edit. | Recheck the field against the applicable evidence and correct the value if needed.5 |
| Notified suggested edit | The owner has 4 days to accept or reject certain suggestions. | Respond within the notification window.3 |
What should I do when Google changes the information again?
Use the sequence below each time instead of changing all three fields at once:
- Identify the field. Separate hours, category, and name. Record the exact old and new values.
- Identify the signal. Check the notification, blue text, suggested-edit notice, or owner-edit status.
- Check the evidence. Use the real schedule for hours, the business's primary activity for category, and current signage or stationery for the name.12109
- Correct only that field. Use the owner edit path while signed in to the linked Google Account.4
- Wait for the status. Google says review usually takes up to 10 minutes and can sometimes take up to 30 days.5
- Recheck the public profile. If the value changes again, open Collected info when available and compare every public reference that may supply the field.7
Google announced on April 16, 2026 that it was rolling out proactive email alerts for important Business Profile edits and using Gemini models to catch and block unhelpful edits across Android, iOS, and desktop. Google described this as a rollout, so an alert is not guaranteed for every owner or every edit.13
What else should I know about repeated profile changes?
Can Google change my Business Profile without asking me first?
Yes. Google says it may update profile information after reports indicate that the information is inaccurate or outdated. Google also says some suggested user edits may be applied without prior owner review, while certain other suggestions generate a 4-day response window.23
Does a Pending or Not approved edit mean my profile is suspended?
No. Those are owner-edit statuses. Pending means the edit remains under review. Not approved means Google could not confirm the accuracy of the edit. Google handles suspended or disabled profiles through a separate restricted-profile appeal process, so check for that restriction path instead of treating an edit result as a suspension.65
Can I use a custom category or add search terms to the business name?
No. Google says a business must select a category from the list, and the Business Profile name must match the real-world name used on signage, stationery, and other branding.1210
Where can I read more about editing a profile?
Use editing and removing your Google Business Profile for the owner edit path, and read why Google changed your Business Profile category for the category-specific branch. The Google Business Profile hub collects the related setup and correction topics.
