Google Business Profile service-area setup checklist

By Sergey Sulimko, Founder8 min read

Use this copyable final pass after the service-area setup guide has helped you choose a storefront, service-area business, or hybrid profile. It checks what setup guides often leave easy to miss: profile type, address and signage, named areas, one profile for one crew, and the post-save result.

Copy this checklist

Before publishing or changing a service-area or hybrid Google Business Profile

Eligibility

  • The business has a physical location customers can visit or travels directly to customers where they are.
  • The business provides an in-person service and is not online-only.
  • Profile type: [ ] service-area, with no customers served at the business address, or [ ] hybrid, with customers served at the address and at theirs.
  • If the business sells products or services with a minimum-age requirement, including alcohol, cannabis, or weapons, it has a storefront and is not using a service-area profile without one.

Address and storefront

  • For a service-area business, the business address is removed or hidden because customers are not served there.
  • For a hybrid business, the real customer-facing address and the service area are both entered.
  • For a hybrid business, the stated hours are when staff are available to receive customers at the address.
  • Any displayed address has permanent fixed signage showing the business name at that address.
  • If the business travels to customers but does not have a storefront with clear signage, it uses one service-area Business Profile rather than showing an address.
  • If the location has no permanent on-site signage, the profile is set up as a service-area business rather than a storefront.
  • Any address shown is accurate and precise.
  • Any address shown is not a P.O. box or a mailbox at a remote location.
  • The business does not use a rented physical mailing address where it does not operate.
  • If a virtual office is considered, the business actually operates there and the office is staffed during business hours; it is not merely a mailing address.
  • If the location is in a co-working space, it has clear signage, receives customers during business hours, and is staffed during those hours by the business’s own staff.
  • If this is a delivery-only virtual food brand operating from a shared kitchen, the brand hides its address, adds service areas to that brand, and has distinct branded packaging and a distinct website.

Service area

  • The owner has opened the Business Profile and selected Edit profile → Location → Edit next to Service area.
  • The owner has selected or entered each area and selected Save.
  • Every entry is a city, postal code, or another named area the business actually serves.
  • The list contains no more than 20 areas.
  • The list uses named areas, not a radius around the business.
  • If the profile still has a legacy radius, it has been replaced with named areas because a previous radius cannot be edited.
  • The list is as specific and accurate as possible.
  • The overall boundary is about 2 hours of driving time from the business base; a larger service area may be appropriate for some businesses.

Profile scope

  • One profile covers the whole area served by one central service location and one crew.
  • Separate profiles are used only when each distinct service location has its own separate service area and separate staff.

After saving

  • The saved profile still shows the correct business type: service-area or hybrid.
  • The address visibility matches where customers receive service.
  • The named areas were retained and still match the business’s actual coverage.
  • Any service-area location the business no longer serves has been removed.
  • All service areas are removed only when the profile is switched to a storefront with its business address shown.
  • If Google approved the edit but it is not visible yet, up to 48 hours have been allowed before treating it as missing.
  • The owner has noted that changing business information may require re-verification.

Rules in this checklist come from Google’s service-area help and business-representation guidance, read 2026-09-27.12 The eligibility and signage checks also reflect Google’s verification guidance.3

What goes wrong with service-area profiles

  • A city is listed but the crew never reaches it. Google says service-area entries should be specific and accurate. Remove locations the business does not serve.1
  • A legacy radius is still present. Google says a previous radius cannot be edited. Replace it with a city, postal code, or another named area.1
  • A virtual office, UPS box, or remote mailbox is shown as the address. Google does not accept P.O. boxes or remote mailboxes. A rented mailing address where the business does not operate is not eligible, and a service-area business that does not serve customers at its location should hide its address.12
  • A second profile is created for another city even though the same crew serves the whole territory. One profile should cover one service location’s area. Multiple profiles require distinct locations, separate service areas, and separate staff.12
  • An age-restricted business uses a service-area profile without a storefront. Google’s representation guidance requires a storefront for businesses associated with minimum-age products or services such as alcohol, cannabis, or weapons.2
  • Areas remain after the business scales back. Remove each service-area location the business no longer serves.1

Will adding a service area make my profile appear there?

No. A service area tells Google where the business serves, but it does not by itself make the profile appear in every named area. Google says local results are mainly based on relevance, distance, and popularity.14

How should a plumber enter service areas?

Use this fictional plumber to check the shape of the setup. The plumber is based in Columbus, Ohio, serves customers at their properties, and does not receive customers at the base address. It therefore uses one service-area profile with the address hidden.

The right list uses named areas, stays under Google’s 20-area limit, and belongs to one crew.12 For a real business, every entry must be an area the crew actually serves, and the overall boundary should be about 2 hours of driving time from the base.12 This example is fictional, not evidence of coverage, and not a Google recommendation.

Right list: named areas entered on one profile

  • Columbus, OH
  • Dublin, OH
  • Gahanna, OH
  • Grove City, OH
  • Hilliard, OH
  • Reynoldsburg, OH
  • Upper Arlington, OH
  • Westerville, OH
  • Whitehall, OH
  • Worthington, OH
Wrong approach Why it fails the checklist
A 50-mile radius around Columbus Google uses named areas. A legacy radius cannot be edited and must be replaced with a city, postal code, or another named area.1
Adding Dayton, OH even though the crew never reaches it Service areas must be specific and accurate. Remove areas the business does not serve.1
Creating a second profile in Dublin for the same Columbus crew One profile covers one central service location. A separate profile needs a distinct location, separate service area, and separate staff.12

Use the business shape to decide what the profile shows and what the hours mean:

Business shape Address shown or hidden Service area What the hours mean
Service-area business Hidden when customers are not served at the address1 Named areas the business actually serves1 Regular customer-facing hours under Google’s general business guidance. This is not a separate service-area rule.2
Hybrid Real customer-facing address shown1 Named areas the business also serves1 When staff are available to receive customers.1
Storefront after removing service areas Business address shown1 None. All service areas can be removed only for a storefront with its address in the profile.1 Regular customer-facing storefront hours.2

Common questions

Can I remove every service area from the profile?
Only when the business is a storefront and its business address is shown in the profile. If the business still travels to customers without serving them at its own address, keep the service areas and remove only locations it no longer serves.
What should a service-area business’s hours mean?
Use regular customer-facing hours under Google’s general business-representation guidance. For a hybrid, the stated hours are when staff are available to receive customers at the shown address.
What happens after I save a service-area edit?
Google says an approved edit may take up to 48 hours to appear on the profile. The timing starts after approval, and a change to business information may require re-verification.
