Setting up your Google Business Profile service areas

By Sergey Sulimko, Founder9 min read

Choose the profile type from where customers meet the business. Show an address only when customers are served there and the location has permanent signage. If customers are not served at the address, use a service-area business profile, hide the address, and enter the cities, postal codes, or other areas the business genuinely serves. If customers visit the address and the business also travels or delivers, enter both the address and service area.

How do I choose the service-area option when I create the profile?

Google asks whether customers can visit a location before it asks for the service area. After you enter the business name and category, choose Yes when customers can visit a storefront staffed during business hours. Choose No when the business has no storefront staffed during business hours. Then enter the cities, postal codes, or other areas the business serves. Google allows up to 20 service areas and recommends keeping the overall boundary within about two hours of driving time from the base, with a larger area possible for some businesses.1

That first answer determines the address choice. A service-area business visits or delivers to customers but does not serve them at its business address. A hybrid business serves customers at its address and also visits or delivers to customers.2

Which type of service business am I?

Use the business's real customer journey, not the place where equipment or paperwork happens. The Google Business Profile hub covers the wider profile. These examples apply Google's storefront, service-area, and hybrid definitions to common cases.23

Business reality Profile type What to enter
A plumber visits customers and does not receive them at the business base Service-area business Hide or remove the address and enter the areas the plumber serves.
A pizzeria serves diners at its location and also delivers food Hybrid business Show the address and add the delivery service area. The location must have permanent signage and be staffed to receive customers during its stated hours.
A home office receives customers during stated hours and also travels to customers Hybrid business, if the location has permanent fixed signage Enter the real address and service area. If customers do not actually visit, use a service-area profile instead.
A shop has no permanent signage and also travels to customers Service-area business Do not present the shop as a storefront. Hide the address and enter the service area until the storefront meets Google's conditions.

Which service-area rules should I check before editing?

Keep these rules together while building the list. The add, remove, and post-save instructions below use this table rather than repeating its limits.

Google rule How to apply it
Up to 20 service areas Enter no more than 20 cities, postal codes, or other supported areas. Twenty is a ceiling, not a target.3
No radius Do not set a radius around the business. If the profile used a radius previously, replace it with cities, postal codes, or another supported area type.3
About two hours from the base Keep the overall boundary within about two hours of driving time from the business base. Google says a larger area may be appropriate for some businesses.4
Specific and accurate Select places the business genuinely serves now. Remove locations it no longer serves.3
A real operating address An address shown on Google needs permanent fixed signage for the business name. P.O. boxes and mailboxes at remote locations are not acceptable.4
Approved edits may take up to 48 hours to show Check the profile after saving, then allow the approval and display window Google states for an approved service-area edit.3

A location far beyond the two-hour boundary falls outside Google's stated guidance. Start with the routes the business can actually serve and use a larger area only when it is appropriate for the business. Google describes the two-hour point as guidance, not a guaranteed hard cutoff.4

How do I add or edit a service area?

Google's current menu path has five parts:

  1. Go to the Business Profile.
  2. Select Edit profile, then Location.
  3. Next to Service area, select Edit.
  4. Select a suggested service area or enter one.
  5. Select Save.3

Before saving, compare each selected area with the rules table. If customers are served at the address, keep the real address and add the service area. If customers are not served there, follow the service-area business checklist and use only the service area.

How do I remove a service area?

Remove only locations the business does not serve:

  1. Go to the Business Profile.
  2. Select Edit profile, then Location.
  3. Next to Service area, select Edit.
  4. Under Selected service areas, remove the location or locations the business does not serve.
  5. Select Save.3

To remove every service area, Google says the business must be a storefront with its business address in the Business Profile. That exception applies to removing all areas. It does not allow a storefront to keep an area it no longer serves.3

How should a home-based business set its address and service area?

A home-based business that visits customers and does not receive them at home should use a service-area business profile. Remove the public address and enter only the service area. A home-based business that receives customers at home and also travels can enter both the real address and service area when the address meets Google's signage and staffing rules.34

To hide a service-area business's address, follow Google's five-step path:

  1. Go to the Business Profile.
  2. Select Edit profile, then Location.
  3. Next to Business location, select Edit.
  4. Turn off Show business address to customers.
  5. Select Save.5

Google says the address is public by default. Hide it only when the business is a service-area business. After the address is hidden, the profile shows only the service area. If no service area is entered, Google chooses a local area.5

What goes wrong when the address or service area is wrong?

Several profile problems come from treating a mailing address as a storefront or treating the service-area field as a ranking shortcut.

Problem Google rule and the practical fix
The address is shown but the location has no permanent signage Google says the business is not eligible as a storefront and should be listed as a service-area business. An address shown on Google needs permanent fixed signage for the business name.34
The profile uses a virtual office or remote mailbox A rented mailing address where the business does not operate is not eligible. P.O. boxes and remote mailboxes are not acceptable. A service-area business may list a virtual office only when that office is staffed during business hours; a coworking office also needs clear signage, customer reception during business hours, and the business's own staff during business hours.4
Google asks for verification after the business changes its address or profile information Changes to business information may require re-verification. A move to a new address after verification requires it. Google supports video verification for service-area and hybrid businesses.67
The selected area reaches far beyond the base Reduce the overall area to Google's about-two-hour guidance unless a larger area is appropriate for the business.4

Can one service business use one profile for several cities?

Yes. One service-area business should use one profile for its central office or location with a designated service area. Do not create a separate profile for every city covered by one operating location. Google allows one profile for each location only when the service business has different locations with separate service areas and separate staff at each location.4

Age-restricted products and services, including alcohol, cannabis, and weapons, require a storefront. Google does not permit those businesses to operate as service-area businesses without one.4

What will customers see after I set a service area?

Customers can find the profile and the areas served when they search for the service business or its category on Google Maps or Search. Google describes the service area as the place where the business can provide its products or services. When the address is hidden for a service-area business, Google says the profile shows only the service area, not the public business address.25

Will adding more areas make me show up there?

No ranking effect for adding service areas is published by Google. Google's local-ranking guidance, read 2026-09-27, says local results are mainly based on relevance, distance, and popularity. The page does not identify the service-area list itself as a ranking factor.8

Enter an area because the business serves customers there, not because an extra entry is expected to create visibility. To measure how a profile appears across locations instead of guessing from one search, use the local SEO visibility guide. If the profile does not appear at all, use the Google Maps troubleshooting guide.

What should I check after saving?

Use this short checklist after the edit:

  • The profile type matches how customers meet the business.
  • The address, if shown, still matches the real staffed location and its customer-facing conditions.
  • Each selected area is a place the business serves now, and outdated locations are removed.
  • The business has not created extra profiles for cities covered by one operating location.
  • The edit is approved before judging the updated profile display.
