Google Business Profile services editor checklist

By Sergey Sulimko, Founder5 min read

Use this checklist when you add or review a service in a Google Business Profile. It keeps the service name, description, price, category, editor availability, and final save review together. If the item is a food menu or a physical product, use the services and products editor guide to choose the right editor first.

Google Business Profile services editor check

Choose the right editor

  • The item is a service the business provides, not a food-and-drink menu item or a physical product.
  • If the business is food and drink, I stopped and checked the menu editor. Google says the menu editor is for food-and-drink businesses only.
  • If the business is retail and the item is a physical product, I stopped and checked Products instead. For automatic in-store products, the business must also meet Google's country, retail, and Point of Sale to Local Inventory requirements.
  • The Services editor is available for this Business Profile or business category. Google says businesses in certain categories, including service businesses, might have the option.
  • If the editor is missing, I checked the linked Google Account and looked on both Google Search and Google Maps, knowing that available features can differ by surface and device operating system.

Service name

  • I selected a suggested service when it accurately describes what the business provides.
  • If the service was not listed, I used Edit services → Add more services → Add custom service.
  • The custom service name contains no profanity, gibberish, personal information, price, or phone number.
  • The price is in the price field, not in the custom service name.

Service details

  • The description explains the service itself and contains no detail that belongs in the name field.
  • The price is entered in the service's price field when a price is useful to the customer.
  • The business still offers this service now; I removed it if the business no longer provides it.
  • The service is grouped under the correct service category.
  • If I need another category, I used Edit services → Add a new business category, entered the category, selected from Google's available options, and chose the services offered in it.

Save and review

  • I am signed in to the Google Account linked to the Business Profile.
  • I checked the selected service, category, description, and price before saving.
  • I selected Save after adding or editing the service.
  • To remove a service, I selected Delete service and then saved the change.
  • I recorded the saved state and checked the profile on the editing surface available to me.
  • I know that Google reviews changes before updating them live, and I have not assumed an approval time.

When should I stop and use another editor?

Use the menu editor for food-and-drink businesses. Use Products for physical goods sold by a retail business. Google's current profile-editing guidance labels Menu or services and Products as limited-availability sections. For automatic in-store products, Google specifies a retail business in the US, Canada, the UK, or Ireland and a connection between the store's Point of Sale system and the Local Inventory app.1

Do not turn an unavailable control into a service listing. Google says the services option may depend on the business category, and profile features can differ between Search, Maps, and device operating systems. Some businesses might also need verification before making changes.21

What should I check in a custom service name?

Keep the custom name as the name of the service. Google says policy-violating custom services can be automatically rejected. Its exclusions are profanity, gibberish, personal information, prices, and phone numbers.2

Enter a price in the service's price field instead. Google separately documents prices and descriptions as details that can be added to a service. The checklist keeps those fields separate so a useful price does not turn into a disallowed custom name.2

How do I add a service category?

Open Edit services, choose Add a new business category, enter the category, and select from Google's available options. Then select the services offered in that category, add a custom service if the service is not listed, and choose Save.2

This is different from Add more services, which adds services to the existing editor. Both paths can offer Add custom service, so apply the custom-name checks before saving.2

Why is Edit services missing?

Google says businesses in certain categories might have the services option, not every Business Profile. Check the linked Google Account and look on both Google Search and Google Maps because feature controls can differ between surfaces and device operating systems. Some businesses might need to verify the profile before making changes.21

Google reviews profile changes before updating them live. The cited guidance does not give a universal approval or publication time, so treat the saved edit and the live result as separate checks.1
