How do I review and maintain services in the Google Business Profile editor?

By Sergey Sulimko, Founder6 min read

Review every listed service against what the business offers today, then use Business Profile → Edit services to correct its name, price, or description. If you need a new service category, use Edit services → Add a new business category. Save the changes, check Google's edit status, and inspect Edit profile for any Google-originated update alert. Google makes Edit services available only for some business categories, so the option may not appear on every profile.123

This guide is the maintenance loop. The Google Business Profile hub covers the wider profile. For first-time setup, use the published guide to products and services, then return here for recurring checks.

What should I check before I edit a service?

Treat the services list as an inventory of current offerings, not a list of every keyword or product. Google says some business categories can showcase offerings, may receive suggested services tailored to the business type, and can add custom services.1

Use one row per service in your review record:

Check Question to answer What to do
Category Is the service in the right group? Keep categories aligned with the types of services the business offers. If the needed group is missing, add it through Edit services → Add a new business category.
Service name Does the name describe an actual offering? Keep it factual. If you create a custom service, do not put profanity, gibberish, personal information, a price, or a phone number in the name.
Price Is the price still accurate? Update the price field when the editor provides it. Do not put a price in a custom service name.
Description Does the description still match the work? Update the description when it has changed.
Still offered? Does the business still provide this service? Keep it if yes. If no, remove it with Delete service. This is an owner review decision, not a documented availability field.

Google says services can be grouped and can include details such as descriptions and prices. Google also says editing features can differ between Search and Maps and by device or operating system, so use the fields Google shows.12

How do I open the services editor?

Sign in to the Google Account linked to the Business Profile. Google says direct editing is available on Search or Maps, but features can vary by surface and device.2

Use Google's documented path:

  1. Go to your Business Profile.
  2. Select Edit services.
  3. Select the service you want to review.
  4. Add or change information such as the price and description.
  5. Select Save.

To remove a service that the business no longer offers, select Delete service in the same flow, then select Save.1

How do I add a service that is not listed?

Open Edit services, select Add more services, and choose the service. If the service is not listed, select Add custom service, then select Save.1

Google says custom service names that violate its policies can be rejected automatically. Do not put profanity, gibberish, personal information, prices, or phone numbers in a custom service name. Put the price in the price field when Google provides one.1

How do I add a service category?

To add a service category, open your Business Profile, select Edit services, then select Add a new business category. Enter the category, choose from the available options, select the services you offer or Add custom service, and select Save.1

How are services different from menus and products?

Use Edit services for work the business provides. Use the separate menu or product feature for a different kind of offering. Google's editing guidance says the menu editor is for food and drink businesses only. For a retail business in an eligible country, listed as the US, Canada, United Kingdom, or Ireland, Google describes products as a separate feature and says the store's Point of Sale system must connect to the Local Inventory app.2

Offering Use Boundary
Service Edit services A service the business provides, such as an installation or repair.
Food or drink menu item Menu editor The menu editor is for food and drink businesses.
Physical retail product Google's product feature Eligibility and the required inventory connection are separate from the services editor.

The broader services and products answer covers those neighboring editors. Keep a service in Edit services instead of turning it into a menu item or a product record.

How do I know whether Google accepted the change?

Check the edit status after saving. Google documents three statuses for edits to a verified Business Profile: Accepted, Not approved, and Pending. Google says review usually takes up to 10 minutes, but it can sometimes take up to 30 days.3 Those are Google's stated review windows, not an approval guarantee.

Status What it means What to do
Accepted The updated information displays on the Business Profile. Check the service name, category, price, and description as they appear.
Not approved Google might not have been able to confirm the accuracy of the change. Recheck the service information. An appeal may be available.
Pending The edit is still under review. Wait for the status to change, then check the saved service again.

How do I check for stale services after saving?

Run the same review at each maintenance pass. The sequence below keeps the owner decision separate from Google's editor status:

  1. Compare each service with the work the business offers now.
  2. Check the category, name, price, and description for each current service.
  3. Remove a service that is no longer offered with Delete service, then select Save.
  4. Record whether Google's status is Accepted, Not approved, or Pending.
  5. Open Edit profile and check for a notification or alert about a Google-originated profile update.

Google says it might update a Business Profile after receiving reports that its information is inaccurate. If that happens, Google says the owner receives a notification and sees an alert in Edit profile.3 Use the alert as a prompt to inspect the profile. Do not treat it as a promise that every stale service produces an alert.

Why can't I see Edit services on my Google Business Profile?

The services editor may be missing because Google makes the feature available only to certain business categories. Google also says editing features can differ between Search and Maps and by device or operating system. Sign in with the Google Account linked to the profile, then check the profile on the surface where you normally manage it.12

If the editor still does not appear, do not treat its absence as permission to put service names in the business name, category, menu, or product fields. Use the field that matches the offering when Google makes that feature available.

Does Google provide an availability switch for each service?

Google's documented services flow does not name an availability field or toggle. Treat “is this service still offered?” as an owner-side review decision. Keep a current service, or use Delete service when the business no longer provides it.
