Why did my Google Maps ranking drop after moving?

By Sergey Sulimko, Founder

A move can lower your Google Maps visibility because the distance to the people searching changed, the new address may remain under Google's review for up to 30 days, and a verified profile must be verified again after an address move. Dining, lodging, and entertainment venues are different: Google rejects their location edits and instructs them to mark the old profile permanently closed and create a new one. Check the new address and map pin, the re-verification status, and the service-area setting first.

What should I check first after moving?

Start with these five move-related checks. Google's local-ranking guidance names relevance, distance, and popularity, while its profile-information guidance says Google also uses public web content and user contributions.

What the move changed What Google does What to check next
New address Reviews the edit. Google says edits usually take up to 10 minutes to review, but sometimes they can take up to 30 days. For dining, lodging, and entertainment venues, Google rejects the location edit and instructs the business to mark the old profile permanently closed and create a new one. For other businesses, open your Google Business Profile, confirm the street address, and adjust the map pin if needed. For dining, lodging, and entertainment venues, mark the old profile permanently closed and create a new one.
Verification A verified business that moves must verify again. For dining, lodging, and entertainment venues, Google rejects their location edits, so mark the old profile permanently closed and create a new one. Google chooses the available verification methods automatically. For other businesses, check the Google Business Profile re-verification steps and complete the method shown. For dining, lodging, and entertainment venues, verify the new profile after creating it.
Service area Reviews the change. Google says an approved service-area edit can take up to 48 hours to appear. Confirm the named cities, postal codes, or other areas in your service-area setting guide.
Distance to searchers Uses the distance between the business and the customer searching. Compare the same query from the same places before judging the change.
Old address elsewhere on the web Compiles Business Profile information from the owner, public web content, user contributions, and Google's interactions with a local business. Update the business website and major listings so the old address no longer conflicts with the profile.

Why can moving change my Google Maps visibility?

Google says local results mainly depend on relevance, distance, and popularity. Distance means how far the business is from the searching customer, and Google may use the customer's known location when the customer does not share one. Moving changes that distance even when the business, category, and service stay the same.

Google also says Business Profile information comes from the owner, public web content, user contributions, and Google's interactions with a local business. An old address on the website or other listings can therefore leave Google with mixed information after the move. Check the profile and the public business details, then compare the same search from the same places.

Can moving cause a Google Maps penalty?

Google's published guidance does not describe a penalty for moving a business. It describes ranking changes through relevance, distance, popularity, and profile accuracy, and it says address edits are reviewed. A position seen before and after a move is therefore a signal to investigate, not a diagnosis of a penalty.

Check the address review status, the map pin, and the re-verification prompt before changing categories or drawing a conclusion from one search.

What should I check about my new business address?

Google requires the address or service area on a Business Profile to be accurate and precise. A storefront address should be a complete street address with official unit information, and the business should maintain permanent fixed signage with its name at that location.

Google does not accept a remote P.O. box or mailbox as a business location. A virtual office where the business does not operate is ineligible. A co-working office needs clear signage, customer access during stated hours, and staffing by the business. Confirm that the new location meets the rule before you submit the edit, then correct the address and map pin in the profile.

If the business has not moved but the address is wrong, Google's policy overview says to contact Google instead of submitting a location edit.

Should I show my address or use a service area?

Choose the setting that matches how customers meet the business. A service-area business visits or delivers to customers without receiving them at its business address. A hybrid business serves customers at its address and also visits or delivers to them.

  • Show the real address when customers visit the business there and the location is eligible.
  • Show the address and a service area when the business is hybrid, the location is staffed, and customers can be received during stated hours.
  • Hide the address and show the service area when the business does not serve customers at its address.

Google allows up to 20 service areas. Enter cities, postal codes, or another accepted area type, not a radius distance. Use the service-area setup guide to switch the setting, then check that every listed area reflects where the business actually serves customers.

How do I update my address on Google?

Dining, lodging, and entertainment venues: Google rejects their location edits. Mark the old profile permanently closed and create a new one. For other businesses, follow these steps:

Google's address-edit path is Business Profile > Edit profile > Location > Business location > Edit. Follow these steps:

  1. Open the Business Profile and select Edit profile.
  2. Select Location, then Edit next to Business location.
  3. Enter the complete new address and select Save.
  4. If Google cannot find the address, select Adjust and place the map pin accurately.
  5. If the business is service-area rather than storefront or hybrid, edit Service area from Edit profile > Location > Service area > Edit.

If the profile disappeared entirely rather than moving lower in results, follow the guide for a business not showing on Google Maps. After saving, check the address, pin, service area, and verification status again.

Do I need to verify my Business Profile again after moving?

Yes. Google says a verified business that moves to a new address must verify the business again. Google automatically chooses the available verification methods based on factors such as business type, public information, region, and business hours. Google may require more than one method after the profile details change.

Open how to verify your Google Business Profile, select Get verified when it appears, and complete the method Google offers for the moved business.

How long will the address and service-area changes take?

Google says edits usually take up to 10 minutes to review, but sometimes they can take up to 30 days because Google reviews them and may reject an edit it cannot confirm. Google says an approved service-area edit can take up to 48 hours to appear. These are profile-display windows, not promises that a previous ranking will return, and Google's local-ranking guidance does not give a recovery timeline.

Record the date and time of each edit, wait for the profile information to show correctly, and rerun the same queries from the same places before evaluating the move.

Should I create a new Business Profile after moving?

Usually, no. Google's duplicate-profile help says that if a business relocates, it should not create a new profile for the new location. It should update the existing profile with the new address. Google says multiple profiles for the same business are against its policies, and a duplicate profile will not show on Google Search or Maps.

Google's policy overview draws a separate rule for businesses whose physical identity is tied to the customer experience. It names dining, lodging, and entertainment businesses as examples, says location edits for those businesses are rejected, and instructs a relocated business in that category to mark the old profile permanently closed and create a new profile at the new location.

Use the existing profile for a relocation covered by Google's duplicate-profile help. Use the close-the-old-profile and create-the-new-profile workflow for the location-identity businesses named in Google's policy overview, then complete the address and verification steps for the new location.
