What is Ask Maps, and what can a local business owner do about it?
Ask Maps is Google's conversational Google Maps experience for questions about real-world places. A local business owner can keep the Business Profile and official website accurate, then check important Ask Maps answers against more than one source. The owner cannot manage every input Google may use, and one personalized answer is not proof that the business information is correct everywhere.
What is Ask Maps?
Google describes Ask Maps as a conversational experience that answers complex, real-world questions and returns a customized map so people can visualize their options. Instead of entering only a place or category, a person can ask about a situation and continue with follow-up questions. The Ask Maps glossary entry covers the feature's place within Google's wider AI search landscape. If the question is about a different assistant, see where ChatGPT gets local business data.
What inputs can shape an Ask Maps answer?
Google's Maps announcement says Maps analyzes information from more than 300 million places, including reviews from a community of more than 500 million contributors, when it builds an itinerary. Google also says Ask Maps personalizes results using signals such as places a person has searched for or saved in Maps. Google Maps Help says AI-powered features may use a person's location and account information to make answers more relevant and personalized. The wording describes possible inputs, not one fixed recipe for every answer.
Where does Google get Business Profile information?
For a local business, the Google Business Profile is one part of a wider public information record. Google says profile information is compiled from a variety of sources, so the record is not limited to what the owner enters. The Google Business Profile hub explains the profile itself, while this table shows the source classes Google names.
| Source class Google names | Examples in Google's documentation |
|---|---|
| Publicly available information | Crawled web content, including the business's official website |
| Licensed third-party data | Data licensed from third parties |
| Users | Addresses, phone numbers, photos, and reviews, including content from business owners who claim profiles |
| Google's interactions with a local place or business | Information based on Google's own interactions with that place or business |
What can a local business owner do about Ask Maps?
Start with the business information Google lets the owner manage. Google's guidelines for representing a business say to:
- Represent the business consistently as it is recognized in the real world.
- Keep the address or service area accurate and precise.
- Choose the fewest categories needed to describe the core business. The Google Business Profile category guide explains the category decision in more detail.
- Keep one profile for the business instead of creating duplicates.
These actions improve the accuracy of the source record an owner controls. They do not turn every other source into an owner-controlled field.
How long do Business Profile edits take to review?
Google says edits to a verified Business Profile are reviewed for guideline compliance. Review usually takes up to 10 minutes, but Google says it can sometimes take up to 30 days. The status tells you what happened to the profile edit.
| Status | What it means |
|---|---|
| Accepted | The updated information displays on the Business Profile. |
| Pending | The edit is still under review. |
| Not approved | Google might not approve the change if it cannot confirm the change's accuracy; an appeal may be available. |
The timing is a usual-versus-sometimes range, not a guarantee. Check the Business Profile after an edit, then verify important business details in more than one place.
How can I check what Ask Maps says about my business?
On an Android phone or tablet, Google documents this path for inspecting Ask Maps:
- Open the Google Maps app.
- Under the search bar, tap Ask Maps.
- Enter a question or tap the microphone.
- Tap Send.
- Continue with follow-up questions when you need more detail.
Google warns that AI-powered answers can sometimes be incorrect. For important information, open the AI-source links and other Search results, check the business's public records, ask another version of the question, and send feedback if something looks wrong. For a local business, compare details such as the name, address or service area, category, hours, phone number, and website with the Business Profile and official website.
Can a business owner control every Ask Maps input?
No. Google says Business Profile information can come from public web content, licensed data, user contributions, and Google's interactions with a place or business. Google also says it may update a profile when reports or other sources indicate that information is inaccurate or outdated, and that not all Google updates can be managed through the profile. For certain suggested edits that require owner review, Google gives the owner four days to accept or reject the change; it may publish the update without a response when other public information supports it.

Common questions
- Does Ask Maps give every person the same recommendation?
- Not necessarily. Google says Ask Maps personalizes results from signals such as places a person has searched for or saved, and Google Maps AI features may use location and account information. The same question can therefore be answered in a different context for different people. Check the location and account context when an answer matters.
- Can I add information directly to Ask Maps?
- For business details, start by keeping the Business Profile accurate and consistent with the real business. Google says profile information is compiled from public web content, licensed data, user contributions, and Google's own interactions with a place or business. Google also says not all updates can be managed through the Business Profile, so correcting the profile is important but does not give an owner control over every source.
- What should I do if Ask Maps gives the wrong information about my business?
- Check the Business Profile, official website, AI-source links, and other Search results against the fact that looks wrong. Correct the Business Profile when its information is inaccurate, ask a second version of the question, and send feedback in Google Maps if the answer still looks wrong. Google recommends checking important AI-powered answers in more than one place.
