Google Business Profile
Does Google Business Profile Q&A affect local ranking?
Short answer
Google's current guidance does not document Google Business Profile Q&A activity or answer count as a local-ranking factor. Google describes Q&A as a way to update place information and show that information on several surfaces, while its local-ranking guidance names relevance, distance, and popularity as the main factors.

Does Google document Q&A as a local-ranking factor?
Google's published local-ranking guidance names relevance, distance, and popularity as the main bases of local results. The guidance does not name Q&A activity, the number of answers, or the presence of a Q&A section as a local-ranking factor.1
That is a boundary on what Google publishes, not proof that Q&A can never have any indirect relationship with another ranking system. Do not turn Q&A activity into a ranking guarantee or report a higher answer count as the cause of a higher local position.
The published local-ranking factors answer explains Google's three-factor summary in full.
What does Google say Q&A does?
Google Maps describes Q&A answers as a way to help update information about places. Google says the questions are based on information it has lower confidence in and that matters to other users, and that an answer is combined with contributions from other users, business owners, and other sources.2
That description gives Q&A an information role. It does not say that asking questions, answering them, or increasing the answer count improves a local result.
Can Q&A information appear in Google Search?
Yes. Google says information from answers may appear on a business's main page, its About tab, and Google Search results. Google also says individual names and answers are not displayed with the new information, and that answers may be displayed as statistics.2
Seeing Q&A-derived information in Search is a display observation. It is not evidence that the business received a higher local position because of Q&A activity.
The site's Google Business Profile Q&A overview covers the owner answer route and the distinction between native Q&A and the discontinued API.
How should I check Q&A without treating it as a ranking tactic?
Use Q&A to check what information Google is showing, and keep that observation separate from a local-ranking observation.
| What to check | What to record | What not to infer |
|---|---|---|
| Availability | Whether Q&A is available for the business's category and region | That every Business Profile has the same Q&A controls |
| Information display | Whether the information appears on the main page, About tab, or Search | That a Search display means a higher local position |
| Local result context | The search query and the searcher's location, then relevance, distance, and popularity | That Q&A count caused a ranking change |
| Automation status | Whether a workflow depends on the retired Q&A API | That API availability answers the ranking question |
Google says Q&A is available only for select business categories and regions, and that its appearance and functionality may change. Business owners and other Business Profile managers can answer questions in the Q&A section when the feature is available.3
For a local-ranking check, compare the same query and search location over time, then describe the observation against Google's published relevance, distance, and popularity frame. Keep Q&A activity and answer counts as separate records unless Google publishes a source that establishes a ranking relationship.
Does the Q&A API affect the answer about local ranking?
No. The Q&A API's lifecycle is an automation question, not a ranking factor. Google's Q&A change log says the My Business Q&A API was discontinued on November 3, 2025, so clients can no longer read or post questions and answers through it.4
If an integration depends on the retired API, use the current Q&A API status to remove that dependency. Do not treat a discontinued API or a manual Q&A surface as evidence about local ranking.
Common questions
- Google's cited guidance does not establish that more answers improve local position. Treat answer count as a Q&A observation, not as a ranking guarantee.
- Google documents where place information from answers may appear, including Search results. Displaying information and choosing a local result are separate behaviors in the cited help pages.
